Gallorette ran 72 times, 55 against the best males of her era, including Armed, Stymie, Assault, Pavot and Polynesian. She finished in the money 54 times, with wins in the Metropolitan, Brooklyn, Carter and Whitney handicaps. No modern filly or mare can match the level of competition that Gallorette faced on a regular basis. We’ll likely never see another quite like Gallorette.
  • Footlick · She is one of the best, no doubt · 930 days ago
  • buckpasser · Couldn't agree more. Was HOY for a reason. One of the best. Many of these old timers raced against males because there were few top races exclusively for older fillies and mares. · 930 days ago
She won 21 of 72 starts and was out of the money 18 times. I respect her, and think she's great, but she's being ranked way too high here. She doesn't quite deserve the adulation.
She should be in the 90-100 range.
  • travel_vic · by all accounts one of the best of the last 100 years as she beat a belmont stakes winner · 1033 days ago
  • buckpasser · She not only beat Pavot, Belmont stakes winner, but beat hoop jr. A derby winner and beat Stymie, whom no one could call a poor handicap horse. It must be noted that in her day, there were fewer races for older mares tan there are today · 1033 days ago
Gallorette was such a fantastic racemare. She is very deserving of one of the top 3 spots, in my opinion. Sadly, I doubt she'll ever reach those kinds of rankings, simply because the spotlight is more on horses of the past 50 years. It's almost disheartening, really. Oh well, God bless out fillies and mares.
The greatest racemare of all time, well chosen by Bloodhorse. It easily beats out Sports Illustrated best female racehorses of all time, because unlike Bloodhorse they don't have a historical perspective.
