What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Frankel...

Frankel's trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, is on record as saying he'd love to see a Frankel vs. Black Caviar match-up, but the only race it's likely possible for the 2 to meet would be if they both ran in the G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Since it's highly unlikely that Peter Moody would ever send Black Caviar to Goodwood to face Frankel in the Sussex Stakes, and as equally unlikely that Sir Henry Cecil would ever send Frankel to Australia to face Black Caviar at any distance, here's some food for thought to chew on. As a general rule, when I make comments concerning various horses I speak only for myself. But I'd be willing to bet my fellow American racing enthusiast wouldn't have a problem with this hypothetical coming to pass at all? How about Peter Moody and Sir Henry Cecil send both of them to America in November to square off in the G1 Breeders Cup Mile over Santa Anita's turf course? That way, they both have to do a bit of traveling to get to the show, so to speak. And neither could ever use the other had home field advantage card as an excuse for losing the race. Just a suggestion, but boy wouldn't that make for most epic Breeders Cup Mile ever!!

  • footlick · Sea the Stars was a brilliant horse. Nobody is disputing that. If you feel that he was better because he stretched out, then you do. That means that Goldikova and Black Caviar get downgraded also. Just remember, whatever qualifications you put on Frankel get put on all horses. Not just the ones you select. No 10 furlong races or longer means just that. · 1 day ago ·

Given how well he's ran in the Ky. Derby and Preakness, and given racing immortality's only 1 race away for him, I don't have a problem at all with I'll Have Another being #1 in the active power rankings on this web-site. But Frankel should certainly be at #2 now behind him. Not Black Caviar. I just saw the most recent Timeform ratings over the Racing Post web-site, and Frankel's rated 9 points above Black Caviar. He has a 139 for the Locking Stakes. Black Caviar a 130 for the Lightning Stakes, tied with Cirrus Des Aigles who also has a 130 for the Prix Ganay. Do the right thing, move Frankel up above Black Caviar where he deserves to be, IMO.

  • lonhro · If you are going to win major races best they be the Triple Crown races. If you do it as a 4yo against open horses it won't be remembered as vividly even though you are meeting fully mature horses at level weights with deeper more experienced fields in general. You have to be very good to win the Triple Crown but I cannot help but feel that horses like Dr Fager and Native Dancer have been underrated because they didnt win the Triple Crown, despite doing so much in their careers. · 2 days ago ·

I'm afraid I've never liked Frankel, because, for me, he was being hyped too much as a two year old, and I'm not sure about the quality of the 2000 Guineas field, though I'm happy to corrected about that! I also found the Sussex Stakes just a little inconclusive since Canford Cliffs was injured during the race and therefore didn't run at his best. It also bothers me that Frankel is being considered great, when, in my opinion, he hasn't accomplished as much as Sea The Stars, who, as I'm sure everyone knows, is the only horse ever to win the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, and the Prix de'l Arc de Triomphe, or even Black Caviar, unbeaten in 19 runs, and going for her 20th straight win on Saturday 28 April. Hope I haven't offended anyone!

This may sound foolish, and everyone uses a good amount of hyperbole in sport, but this animal is truly frightening. He beats the absolute best in the world in a fashion which none of us have ever seen. His first start of his 4 y.o. campaign, and this is what he produces? What in the world is he going to do in the months to come? I had serious concerns about the connections moving him past 8 f's, but after seeing this, I encourage it. Frankel is in a class of his own.

  • LAZMANNICK · Footlick and Buckpasser. I am enjoying reading your posts. Nijinsky, like Northern Dancer, was always one of my favorites (Buckpasser too of course). I remember when they sold him at auction, for $84K I believe. I was living in Canada at the time and wasn’t particularly pleased to see that he was going to be shipped off to the UK. However, his accomplishments became legendary in Canadian racing and it seemed that his every move was chronicled in the sports pages and on the news. A true champion. · 6 days ago ·

Frankel tired at the end of the 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes, there was no pace at all to begin with in the Sussex Stakes, and even the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was run at a slow pace early on. I think the 2000 makes Frankel look better than he actually is, as I think that the field was nothing special at all. I really feel that Frankel should not be mentioned in the same breath as Sea The Stars, Man O' War, Secretariat, Nijinsky, or Seabird, since he is not a great horse. He may be a good horse, but he is not a great horse! I haven't seen a video of Black Caviar's 21st straight win yet, but I've read that although she only won by a length and a quarter, she won very easily, in a canter, and that she could have easily won by much more had her jockey Luke Nolen wanted her to. That's greatness!

  • shadowno · If you really think the 6 yo Goldikova had only lost a step well.... your opinion. Her performance on the track would suggest something else. She routinely handled horses like Immortal Verse prior to her final season and her final BC run was sub-par to say the least. If you think her final season was up to or even close to her previously established standard again, your opinion. As to her not competing admirably V Zarkava in the Pouliches she was beaten by maybe two lengths in record time. Most would say she acquitted herself quite well. · 6 days ago ·

  • footlick · shadowno- she ran one bad race her last year of racing. The BC Mile. She ran against competition that was better than Paco Boy. She got beat. She ducked the Sussex and the QEII, and she should have because she didn't have a chance in those races. Don't look at the results, look at the competition. She acquitted herself well, but Canford Cliffs was better than Paco Boy. She lost to Immortal Verse and Dream Well. Frankel did not. She beat Cirrus des Aigles. Frankel did not run against him. She was running against better horses than the previous year with the exception of Makfi, and running well. Look at her thoro-graph numbers for that season and compare it to the season before. There was not much difference. You act like she was off form, and that is an insult to her. As far as the Pouliches, I didn't say she didn't compete admirably, so you do not have to put words in my mouth. I never even mentioned something like that. I said she never gave Zarkava a run for her money. To do that you have to be a threat and have to make a horse work for a win. She was not a threat and Zarkava didn't break a sweat. Goldikova was a brilliant animal, but it is not blasphemy to realize there are more brilliant. · 6 days ago ·

I'm saying this as plainly as I know how. Black Caviar CANNOT beat this horse. At any distance. Excelebration is the third highest rated Timeform horse in the world with a rating of 133. He had the benefit of already having an impressive win in a G3 stakes in Ireland under his best recently, and once again, for a 4th time, he was left for absolute dead in the blink of an eye by Frankel. Black Caviar's great, but Frankel is a genetic freak. The likes of anything close to him Black Caviar hasn't seen in Australia. If that mare takes on Frankel, which I seriously doubt, she'll get left for dead in the same kind of manner that Excelebration got left for dead. If I've offended anyone, I could give a squat. Because I know I'm telling the truth.

  • Disco747 · I agree with lonhro that Black Caviar has demonstrated far more speed than Frankel ever has, however, I don't think he's the best since Secretariat. I'm only starting a new thread because when I click on comment, it doesn't seem to work, I don't know why. I would comment on the existing thread if I could. I'm not British, I'm actually a South African who isn't that keen on Canford Cliffs, although I have no problem with him, and I happen to love Sea The Stars, Black Caviar, Secretariat, and Goldikova. As for ratings, I've only rated a few horses so far, and I'll probably use other ratings when I rate other horses. Incidentally, virtually all of Goldikova's winning times for the mile are faster than Frankel's times for the mile. Sure, there are one or two, maybe two or three of Goldikova's mile times that are slightly slower then Frankel's fastest mile time, but they were still faster than Frankel's slowest mile times. I know Canford Cliffs beat Goldkova in the 2011 Queen Anne Stakes, but Goldikova was in her final year of racing, and I think she was past her best then; also, Goldikova's jockey, Olivier Peslier, was putting up two pounds overweight. I don't know whether that would have had an effect or not, but I think it is worth keeping in mind. I don't want to start an argument, and I'm sorry if I've caused offence to anyone, but I just don't like Frankel, and I'm afraid I never will.

  • Disco747 · I was born in the 80's so I wasn't around for Bold Tropic, unfortunately! Bold Tropic sounds like a brilliant horse! de Kock runs his horses in Dubai pretty much every year, and yes, it is difficult to ship horses out from here because of African Horse Sickness. Black Caviar is definitely one of the best horses I have ever seen, and definitely the best sprinter I have ever seen. Mary Z, I'm sorry, but I'm not climbing aboard any Frankel bandwagon. I don't like Frankel and nothing anyone says can persuade me otherwise. I don't mind you or anyone else liking him, I just don't like him myself! · 7 days ago ·

HE'S BACK. Frankel made it a remarkable ten wins from ten career starts with a scintillating reappearance in easily seeing off his old rival Excelebration for the fourth time. Read More
  • ILuvTurfRacing · Put this race in perspective. Excelebration with a Timeform rating of 133. The third highest rated horse in the world behind Frankle and Black Caviar. Aidan O'Brien even managed to slip in a 2012 seasonal debut race for him at the Curragh in Ireland, and he romped home easily that day in the G3 Gladness Stakes. Conventional wisdom would've been that race fitness, if nothing else, should've been on Excelebration's side at Newbury. Frankel comes in off of a 200+ day lay-off, and really decides this race for everyone before it ever really gets started. He buries a cracking good horse in his own right in Excelebration again, for a 4th time, faster than you can say Jack Sprat. And he wins going away by some 4 or 5 length's hard held, in hand. Every time I see this horse race these days, that old Rolling Stones song, "Beast of Burden" starts playing over and over in my mind. LOL. · 7 days ago ·

An outstanding 8+minute interview with Sir Henry Cecil can be seen on today's Racing Post web-site where he touches on all things Frankel. Cecil said that after the Lockinge Stakes on Saturday, Frankel will go to Ascot in June. But he'll be more likely to run in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes at a mile than the G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at 1-1/4. Cecil said he's almost certain that Frankel will step up to 1-1/4 this season. But more likely around G1 Coral-Eclipse and G1 Juddmonte International Stakes time. He touched of the subject of potential Frankel vs. Black Caviar race. He has nothing but the highest respect for Black Caviar, and he said he'd love to see the 2 clash. Cecil said it would be great for racing. But he feels like the G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood is really the only likely spot the 2 could meet? The final subject he was asked about was if Frankel would come to this year's Breeders Cup? Cecil it's not entirely out of the question, but it is unlikely. He said horses that he sends to Ascot in October for the G1 QE II Stakes or G1 Champion Stakes likely won't appear in America, and that was the more likely place for Frankel. Although he did send Twice Over to America for the BC Classic in 2009 after winning the 09' Champion Stakes when it was still being run at Newmarket. It's a really good interview. Check it out.
