What the Nation is saying about Flying Private...

Michael Cooper and Pamela Ziebarth’s Tizdejavu led every step of the way under Jesus Castanon to win the $62,235 Opening Verse by a half-length before a Downs After Dark crowd of 25,102 Friday night at Churchill Downs.   Trained by Greg Fox, Tizdejavu covered the 1 1/16 miles on a firm Matt Wi...Read More
Jay Em Ess Stable's ARSON SQUAD (Brahms) bided his time in Friday's $169,650 Alysheba S. (G3) at Churchill Downs, saving his best run for the stretch of the 1 1/16-mile test, and pulled away to score by 2 1/4 lengths with jockey Paco Lopez guiding him to a second straight win. Trained by Richard Dut...Read More
What was that all about? Slow pace in the Alysheba (the 24.86 was into the wind, but the 48.95 to the half was half into headwind, half tail or cross), but pace-setting Friesan Fire was nowhere at the finish, and most of the pressing crew had nothing late, either. Winner Arson Squad came from well b...Read More
The Alysheba Stakes (gr. III) April 30 at Churchill Downs the day before the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) is a homecoming of sorts for some former Kentucky Derby contestants.Read More
Total Bull overcame an awkward start and an unforeseen trip to capture his stakes debut in the $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes for older horses on Thursday at Oaklawn Park. Under jockey Calvin Borel, Total Bull ($4) held off the late run of Flying Private to win by a diminishing half-length in 1:44.00 ...Read More
Not only is Dublin the most accomplished 3-year-old on the grounds at Oaklawn Park, he also leads what trainer D. Wayne Lukas says is his best crop of young horses in a long time. "I nominated 18 head for the Triple Crown," he said earlier this week. "I've got a nice bunch of 3-year-olds."Read More
Warning: what you are about to read should be taken with extreme skepticism. Not to sound self deprecating, but yours truly is on one nasty losing streak in the Triple Crown, and the selection for the Belmont Stakes will be made as a means of self defense...Read More
Lukas is not favored to win the Belmont and doesn't quite rule the Sport of Kings the way he once did when he was winning almost every Triple Crown race he entered. But he's clearly having more fun than ever. And if Flying Private or Luv Gov happens to come out of nowhere to give him his 14th Triple ...Read More
Ok, I am officially smitten with Mine That Bird. I admit to being one of those misguided souls who paid no attention to him before the Kentucky Derby other than to comment what a beautiful mover he was. After the Preakness and seeing him on the Belmont track Thursday morning, I have to say in simple...Read More
The two key figures in the pace scenario for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes are Miner's Escape and Charitable Man. The former will be a longshot in the field of 10, while Charitable Man was made the 3-1 second choice behind Mine That Bird. So, let’s see how this may play out...Read More
  • mshutty · Excellent analysis of the Belmont Stakes likely pace scenario by Steve Haskin. I think he has the two early leaders nailed down. There is no doubt in my mind that the Zito barn is sending Miner's Escape. I believe Steve's estimate of where Dunkirk will be sitting early is interesting. He has decent trackable cruising speed, so if the pace is slow he'll find himself closer to the leaders than is being projected but without compromising his late punch. Agree, however that I would prefer he sits about 5 lengths off early closing that gap to two lengths behind about mid final turn. · 1777 days ago ·
The two main elements in predicting the ‘09 Belmont Stakes outcome are pedigree and pace handicapping.Pace makes the race, and Charitable Man looms the one to catch. He is 3-3 on conventional dirt and 2-2 at Belmont. He pulled off a wire job in 6.5f career bow and is capable of rating should another...Read More
Remember when D. Wayne Lukas won an amazing six Triple Crown races in a row and seven of eight from 1994 to 1996? Remember when Lukas sent out one of the most improbable Belmont Stakes winners ever in Commendable? Well, before you dismiss Lukas’ pair of longshots this year, remember who you’re deali...Read More
"Between :49 and :50." That has become your standard instructions by a trainer to his rider prior to a horse's final work for the Belmont Stakes. Gone are the days when trainers would work their horse at least seven furlongs, more likely a mile or even a mile and an eighth for the grueling "Test of ...Read More
Eleven colts and geldings are being pointed toward next Saturday's Belmont S. (G1), but Preakness S. (G1) victress RACHEL ALEXANDRA (Medaglia d'Oro) looks doubtful. Co-owner Jess Jackson didn't rule her out when delaying a decision earlier this week, but he mentioned the June 27 Mother Goose S. (G1)...Read More
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas worked both LUV GOV (Ten Most Wanted) and FLYING PRIVATE (Fusaichi Pegasus) Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs, and will send both in the 141st running of the $1 million Belmont S. (G1) on June 6.Read More

Wayne Lukas plans to send out in the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 6, turned in workouts on Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs in preparation for the final jewel of the Triple Crown.Flying Private covered six furlongs in 1:15.40, and...Read More
The field for the 141st running of the Belmont S. (G1) is beginning to take shape, and there doesn't appear to be much speed among the possible starters. As of Wednesday, the 11 potential runners are RACHEL ALEXANDRA (Medaglia d'Oro), MINE THAT BIRD (Birdstone), CHARITABLE MAN (Lemon Drop Kid), CHOC...Read More
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Tuesday morning that a final decision will be made Wednesday on whether CHARITABLE MAN (Lemon Drop Kid) will start in the $1 million Belmont S. (G1) on June 6. There will be no Triple Crown winner in 2009, but there is a possibility of a showdown in the June 6 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) between the winners of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Blackberry Preakness Stakes (gr. I).Read More
As of about 6:45 a.m. EDT, every horse was on the grounds at Pimlico Race Course for the May 16 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
