What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Fast Alex...

Cathy & Bob Zollars and Mark Wagner’s Thiskyhasnolimit took advantage of an uncontested lead and finished strongly to win the $100,000 Louisiana Handicap by one length over Jim Tafel’s Fast Alex. For older horses at 1 1/16 miles, the Louisiana starts a three-race series that will also include th...Read More
Bourque Goldstein Thoroughbreds’ Alma d’Oro, stakes-placed on multiple occasions, will carry the assigned high weight of 121 pounds in Saturday’s $100,000 Louisiana Handicap for older horses at 1 1/16 miles on the main track and has been tapped as the 3-1 early favorite in that middle distance affai...Read More
Jim Tafel’s favored Fast Alex got Santa Super Saturday off to an auspicious start by responding to jockey Robby Albarado’s urging with a nose victory in the 47th running of the $75,000 Tenacious Handicap, but the 4-year old son of Afleet Alex had to repel a furious challenge by Terry Hamilton and R...Read More
One veteran stakes campaigner currently on a three-race win streak, one 5-year-old mare who waltzed home the heroine in last spring’s $100,000 New Orleans Ladies, and a grass dash face-off between this year’s Grade II Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint runner-up and the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint champio...Read More
Joseph Engelhart and Magdalena Racing’s Dark Cove is a bay, but because he has never run at Arlington Park, the 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro might be overlooked in Saturday’s Grade III Washington Park Handicap at Chicago’s northwest suburban oval.  Nevertheless, such a handicapping stance c...Read More
The “Impazible” dream came true for Twin Creeks Racing Stable, trainer Todd Pletcher and his assistant Michael Dilger when Mission Impazible proved clearly best by a length and a half in Saturday’s Grade II $400,000 New Orleans Handicap.   A year ago Mission Impazible won the 2010 Louisiana Der...Read More

Jim Tafel LLC’s Fast Alex has his connections thinking about the Grade II, $300,000 New Orleans Handicap in March after an impressive win in Monday’s feature, a $49,000 allowance for older horses at one mile and 70 yards over the Fair Grounds main track.   Despite slow fractions of :24.46, :48...Read More
Conveyance already has won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, and Lookin At Lucky was to go off favored in the Rebel Stakes there Saturday. Saturday might be a good time to kick off a two-prep campaign for the Derby. Last year Mine That Bird made his first start of the year Feb. 28, while the year previous Big Brown kicked things off March 5. Street Sense opened his two-prep slate in 2007 on March 17. Average them together and what do y...Read More
Scored a professional win today (3/1) in a FG allowance over a nice Asmussen horse - Island Soul. The Louisiana Derby should be next for this son of Afleet Alex.

  • mid0827 · Fast Alex is trained by Greg Geier, a very capable trainer based in Chicago and New Orleans. It seems like a couple decades now that Tafel has had his best runners in Kentucky with Carl Nafzger and his former assistant Ian Wilkes, but at the same time Tafel always kept a string in Chicago. Those horses were trained by the late Gene Cilio, and when he passed away a few years ago, Geier, his assistant, took over the string. · 709 days ago ·

Jim Tafel’s Fast Alex did not make it to the races as a 2-year-old, but as a 3-year-old he is fast becoming a rising star.   Ridden by Curt Bourque and trained by Greg Geier, Fast Alex was unhurried early but closed with a bold late rush to capture Monday’s $41,000 allowance optional claiming r...Read More
A 10-race program will be run on Monday at the Fair Grounds. Pick six carryover of $12,059. There is a 90% chance of rain with a high temperature of 58. Three turf races are on the docket, and in a broken record theme at the current stand, they will almost certainly be moved to the main. Read More
Big weekend coming up with four stakes in California, Oaklawn, and Tampa Bay, which should make for quite a bit of activity on the so-far stagnant Derby Dozen. We’ll have a closer look at these races on Friday...Read More

Stakes Result - William's Kitten (colt; Kitten's Joy - Blush by Menifee) made his usually late run in the grade III Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park, but flattened out a bit and finished third.
