What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Though not nearly as contentious or as fascinating as the battle for Horse of the Year, the race for the sprint title is another that has voters divided and which features a leading contender who emerged thanks to some late-season heroics. After Kodiak Kowboy won the Cigar Mile Saturday at Aqueduct,...Read More
There’s no way to say this without sounding like a disparagement of Summer Bird, who owes me absolutely nothing. He saved me in the Belmont Stakes and made me a Travers celebrity for 15 minutes. I owe him. Read More
  • medlocke · Summer Bird, too, saved me in the Belmont. I had him $10.00 ATB, and he was 11-1, which netted me almost $200. That said, his performance was excellent today. I thought Quality Road would win this race, and still have to wonder if on a dry track if Quality Road may still be able to beat Summer Bird. Because Q.R. ran at him very gamely, even after seeming to not like the mud at Saratoga in the Travers and still came close to winning. But I take nothing away from S.B. He ran like a true champion today, and I wish him all the best. I do look forward to the day that Quality Road gets to race Summer Bird and other top competitors on a dry track. That's when his speed will really show itself and on that day he may turn the tables and get at least a small measure of revenge. · 166 days ago
The connections of Kodiak Kowboy didn't come into Saturday's Grade 1 Vosburgh thinking of using it as a prep for the Breeders' Cup Sprint. But their horse gave them a few reasons to reconsider by running down Fabulous Strike in the final 70 yards to win the $400,000 Vosburgh by a half-length at rain...Read More
The decision as to whether or not Fabulous Strike will be sent to California for the Breeders' Cup has not yet been made. For now, the focus is squarely on the $400,000 Vosburgh, where the 6-year-old son of Smart Strike will have to face a short but stellar field of sprinters Oct. 3 at Belmont Park.Read More
Trainer Todd Beattie isn't sure if 6-year-old Fabulous Strike will go back to the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint after competing Saturday in Belmont Park's $400,000 Vosburgh Stakes for the third straight year.Read More
It’s been far too long since I updated this little spot but the racing season goes through a bit of a lull between the start of the Belmont meet and the beginning of the final Breeders’ Cup prep season.  Read More
As many of you know, there aren't many horses in training that I like more than Fabulous Strike. The gutsy 6-year-old will try for his second Vosburgh win next week and then a decision will be made whether to send him back to California for the Breeders' Cup Sprint, where he finished fifth a year ag...Read More
The sun shone proudly every day at old Saratoga during Week 2 and not one turf race was transferred to the main track and if you know anything about the Spa and the shaky weather, that is an accomplishment. Read More

The Eclipse Award voting is still more than five months away, but the star-studded $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. II) Aug. 9 at Saratoga may go a long way in deciding the nation's top sprinter.Read More

Steve Haskin writes an interesting blog piece detailing how many of the best horses in racing today could very well skip the Breeders' Cup. Macho Again, shown winning the Stephen Foster, is one example of a horse who is targeting other races besides the Cup.Read More
  • cigar · More facts than doomsday... something to think about with synthetic BC's. · 249 days ago
  • ruby · Yes, but Macho Again stinks and would not win the BC Classic. Haskin has painted a worst-case scenario to fit his story based on this earth-shattering analysis: Any horse that ran on polytrack one time and ran poorly might not come to the BC. · 249 days ago
In the first installment of the 2008 Sprint Diary, published right around this time a year ago, we wrote the following: Whether they like it or not, horsemen and fans alike will have to get used to the idea that in order for their charges or favorites to win divisional honors in the sprinting catego...Read More
