Sidney's Candy: Can he go 10 furlongs?
Sidney's Candy has done very little wrong, enjoying free-and-clear early leads at Santa Anita. The question looming is whether or not he can truly go the Classic distance. Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds takes a look.

He might need a bus ticket to get 10 if there is ANY sort of early pressure, which there figures to be plenty of if the Derby field continues to shake-out like it currently looks.

Yes, and that will be a big bus... not a short bus. Need room for Rule, Super Saver, Conveyance, Sidney's Candy and others.

IMO, pace is the one thing that this year's Kentucky Derby is in no short supply of. Whether or not Sidney's Candy can run on or right at the lead for the whole 10 furlongs, likely being pressed by Rule and others, is the question? Or maybe even moreover, can he do it on conventional dirt? That, to me, is an even bigger question about this colt than the 10 furlongs question is. All of his lifetime starts have come over west coast, synthetic tracks. If Sidney's Candy doesn't respond to the conventional dirt at Churchill Downs, then the 10 furlong question will not even be an issue. TJMO.

Sidney's Candy, along with many that ran over the Pro-Ride and synthogarbage, are at a real disadvantage when first traversing real dirt. While Sidney's Candy's early races fit the Derby mold, the stretch outs have been late (typical for most routes at Anita these days), Facing progressively SLOWER fractions coming into the SA Derby, one will have to factor in how this one did facing what was not a very fast SA Derby either.....BUT, War Emblem's last move in Illinois was on the lead and he still distributed energy LATE which gave credence to that one's ability to apportion energy over 10.....Can this one do it as well? Without the other players it is yet to be determined.

If not for the Red Sea parting Hard Spun would have laid waste to Street Sense. The same Hard Spun who wasn't supposed to be able to handle the dirt. The true athletes rise to the ocassion and Sidney will take it wire to wire!! Big Esk will have a long trip around horses and finish 3rd behind Endorsement.

Sidney's Candy is the fastest horse in the field, don't like the FACT that he has never raced on dirt and it does matter, remember Pioneer of the Nile last year. Eskendereya won the Wood easily and was never touched with the whip. Lookin at Lucky had to give it his all to win the Rebel, can he run the 1 1/4?

I think yes he could go 10 furlongs, the bigger picture is the synthetic to dirt change, but keep in mind he did break his maiden on dirt at Del Mar. But to have other speedsters breathing on his neck the whole 10 furlongs will be the kicker. He has been finishing fairly stong at 1 1/16 - 1 1/8 but there's still a big difference there.

Then there's the theory, if he takes to a fast CD track like Zenyata took to OP, he'll move up a few. Like they were bred to. ;)

Sweet Rise to Derby Contender
The pedigree of Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Sidney's Candy pairs speed with stamina. Will it be enough to get around the Derby oval first?
