Elite Alex is the 4-5 morning line favorite in the 10th race at Delaware Park on May 11. The flat mile optional claiming event is his first start since disapponting in the Arkansas Derby. He was bred in Canada and might have his eye on the June 26 Queen's Plate.
  • Lmaris · He got beat badly (7 lengths) in a $16,000 optional claiming race. Explains his showing in the Arkansas Derby - he's not graded stakes quality. · 1198 days ago
  • brianalanvh · all hype man · 1198 days ago
What happend to the hype around this one? 9th and 4th at the 1 1/8 distance?

  • bigbrown2332 · I'd back off him if I were Ritchie. I think Rithie put this horse in deep water before he could swim. I hope he gets a bit of a freshening and comes back in an allowance race over poly track or something to set him up for the Queens Plate, or maybe the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on the dirt. Anyway I don't think he's a bad horse, i don't like how Ritchie worked him in between the Lousianna Derby and the Arkansas Derby. 1:11 and change is asking a lot. i think he's a nice horse and if he gets a rest he could pick some more hype again. · 1218 days ago
I think so too, this horse is a sleeper. However what might solidify his standing for the K-Derby is his choice next week at Arkansas Derby or he's going to sing; "Littlerock".
  • brent.austin.neikirk · He has to finish either 1 or 2 next weekend and that will put him into the top 20 in graded earnings. Right now he has $65,000 and #41 according to DRF.com. I'd like to see him finish a close 2nd 'cuz if he finishes 1st especially by a good margin, then everybody will jump on the bandwagon and we won't get as much value. I like EA, Nehro and Brethren for the Arkansas as of today, but that could change depending on who else goes or scratches. But for sure, watch out for EA!!! · 1230 days ago
Watch out for this guy in the AR Derby! I haven't moved him out of my top 10 since I put him in which was January. He's very talented, he's just had some bad luck.

  • brent.austin.neikirk · I think he's a lot better than people think. I've been high on this guy for a while now. I love his pedigree which has tons of stamina influences and he has shown he has some speed, see his last work and his maiden win. He's just had bad luck from wide posts, too far back early on in the race and coming very wide on the turn for home, but still managing to get up for 4th in his last and 3rd in the Southwest. This guy should love the 10f Derby distance if he gets in! Though, he has to be either 1 or 2 in the AD to have enough earnings. · 1233 days ago
  • bigbrown2332 · He went his last 3/8's in 35 in change in the Lousianna Derby. He's got some kind of talent anyway · 1232 days ago
With Calvin Borel aboard, Elite Alex, working from the gate in company with Alex's Vision, showed tremendous early speed, getting his opening quarter in :22 2/5, a half in :46 2/5, and five-eighths in :58 3/5. After cruising past his workmate he drew away in the stretch and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25 3/5.
How weird is that? I wrote this yesterday morning and then I read the following on bloodhorse: http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2011/03/28/ky-derby-trail-making-the-most-of-defeat.aspx. Here's what sallyeatsman said: "Tosser for May 7th. Too slow. Would have to move up big to make any threat at all. Won't make it to the starting gate that day." And then I commented on it saying: I disagree. Look at his pace parameters for that race. He actually came home pretty fast. He's had some bad luck as well. And although good horses overcome this things he did have a bad post and was like 8-wide on the turn. Now, they did have him too far back pretty much the whole race. He does need to improve greatly, but I still think he's a good horse. I'm not saying he's going to win the Derby, but I would use him in the bottom of my exotics because he will keep on coming down the stretch and will be a very good price. Though, he has to run well next out which I'm guessing would be either the Arkansas or Bluegrass and not just because he needs to improve, but he needs the cash. So, I'm not dumping him quite yet.
  • brent.austin.neikirk · So basically, I'm not the only one saying that you shouldn't toss Elite Alex quite yet. He's had some bad luck and he's only going to get better especially the farther he goes and I think 10f is the perfect distance for him to run very well. · 1242 days ago
  • Thead'or · I love how you have so much faith in every prospect still. When one puts out a seemingly lackluster performance, you point out the pros. Keep it up Brent ;) · 1242 days ago

Elite Alex...you remind me of your Daddy...You are a winner with beautiful breeding !!!OXOX
Elite Alex is by a Champion Classic winner out of a mare by a Champion Classic winner, you can't get much better than that. His immediate distaff family has little blacktype, but the third dam was stakes placed and her daughters produced some nice winners, included recent Santa Ynez winner California Nectar.
Had a good work yesterday (03/06). Borel up, worked with 2 other Afleet Alex colts settling 3-4 lengths behind, then made a big move on the turn going 3 wide easily passing his workmates crossing the wire in :59 and 3 for 5f and galloping out the 6f in 1:12 and 2. Said Borel, "That was very awesome!...He's just hitting everything right. He's such a big horse, I think he's only going to get better the farther we go."
  • brent.austin.neikirk · I love this guy, but I don't like the fact that Borel will be on him because the people that don't really follow horseracing are going to look for Borel and throw down on him because of the past few years. · 1264 days ago

The Rebel is shaping up to be a big-time race! There are several horses that I like. Sway Away and Elite Alex are the 2 main horses that I like the most and are in my top 5, but there's also Alternation, Awesome Patriot and Astrology that I'm interested in and are in my top 15. I like Astrology's pedigree as he's a 3/4 brother to Bernardini. I think he's going to be a very good runner, but is a late bloomer just like his 3/4 brother, Bernardini, was. So he might not really break out until late spring or early summer. I also like Awesome Patriot's pedigree. I've always been an Awesome Again fan as one of my favorite horses ever, Ghostzapper, was by AA. And AP's dam is a full-sister to the great Tiznow. And as far as Alternation, I love Slew as a BMS and DH has a great crop of 3-yos this year. He has many stamina influences in his pedigree and is improving with each race so he'll be a factor in The Rebel. Can't wait for this race!!
  • zatt · If the Rebel gets everyone that is listed as possible right now ... it will be an outstanding race! · 1267 days ago
I totally agree, and I am absolutely enamored with this colt after seeing him in person for the first time on Monday at Oaklawn, he is magnificent, and his name is appropriate, he stands 17 hands tall and just like his half brother Sway Away is going to make some noise on the triple crown trail, I think you could see a nice rivalry develop between these two if they meet. The Arkansas weather had Elite Alex behind the Eight ball on Monday, now its warming up and its time to crank things up in the morning, but it maybe a blessing in disguise as they weren’t able to do much due to the snow and I am sure he will be rearing and ready to go. He will likely demolish the Rebel field.
  • gardenesque1 · Good point about the Arkansas weather. J P's Gusto seemed to have the training advantage because he was coming from Santa Anita. Elite Alex should be much fitter for the Rebel. · 1276 days ago
I'm not writing this guy off yet. I like him a lot! He didn't have the best trip and still finished 3rd in a good, large field which gives him much needed experience. They'll have him cranked up for The Rebel. I love EA's pedigree coming from a great family in Family 4 (4-d, Manganese) which has taken the most Belmont and Preakness Stakes. EA has plenty of stamina influences along his tail-female line like Chef-de-races Nureyev, Secretariat, Prince John, Alibhai, Mahmoud and Clarissimus all whom have produced Classic-type runners and also non-CDR Gregorian who has tons of stamina influences and by Graustark(C/S)-Natashka('81 broodmare of the year) and Reine-de-course mares that go back to Frizette.
Many will write him off as a legitimate Derby contender after his dull third place finish in the Southwest, but he missed a work or two. He will be more on the muscle next time out in the Rebel, along with better odds. Alternation rematch will also be interesting.

  • icyhotboo · Thanks for the prompt reply and information.Even though I do bet the thoroughbreds more than the standardbreds for the last 20 years I stick to certain types of races that are familiar to me and I have a positive return on.I have never bet thoroughbreds this early in any season. · 1277 days ago
  • bstaubs22 · I didnt mind his race so much yesterday as he was wide all the way around. It is the fact he wore front bandages for the second race in a row and may have some type of injury or something may have happened during the training missed · 1277 days ago
I read the chart for his race today..looks like he should have won it..would love to see an Alex kid on the triple crown trail.
  • ajump08 · you have no idea, he was lenghts the best. hard to say since i backed my high opinoin on the horse and paid dearly. horse he lost to ran pretty well though and impecibly bred. I like Elite Alex more, but both look like viable contenders on the derby trail. It may be good to compare today's Smarty Jones Stakes time to the 1:42flat that they ran over the icy surface at Oaklawn. · 1313 days ago
