Rafirox's Pre-Gotham Sweet 16
Guess who is my top pick for the Derby, right now? Hint: It is not Goldencents, Verrazano, Uncaptured, Itsmyluckyday, Shanghai Bobby, or Super Ninety Nine.

Thats a terrible top 16 list rafirox honestly. Everyone and there mom has revolutionary on there list. Bern Identy just got back to work tab and is shooting for preakness last i heard. Vyjack not on your list I bet you he jumps in on everyones list after a race like that that further proves he can go two turns. Ive Struck a Nerve you call him a fluke yet still have him as one of the top 16 3 year olds? whattttttttt Tix the truth second? Hes injured wont make derby follow the trail better. Park City 2 sprint races 2 wins he will not have enough time to make derby. And last goldencents unlike vyjack cant go farhter then 1 1/16 so hes no derby horse. Srry this is me being a real critic cause wait till bloodhorse drf and all thoes major horsemen bring out there lists and compare.

Quote from article: "NOTE: This list might be invalid after the Gotham." I put ISAN purely b/c he won, but I think he still needs to prove it wasn't a fluke. Park City is a good looking colt, with upside. Goldencents, you have no right to say he can't go a distance, when he hasn't gone nine yet, and ALL his races are respectful efforts. I don't care what DRF, Bloodhorse people say. That don't matter. EVERYBODY has a different list with different horses. I never heard of TTT being off the trail, I apologize if that was wrong. But, besides that, your last post is ridiculous.

I cant say what goldencents can and cant do? vyjack was undefeated before the gotham by the same sire with the same run type untill yestarday and goldencents wasnt undfeated both graded stakes winners and you left vyjack off??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? thats crazy if you like golden cents you should of liked this horse just the same. Lets look at who vyjack beat in his first 3 starts and lets see who goldencents beat in his races. Vyjack beat orb-foy winner -clawback stakes winner always in a tiz- graded stakes palced. As for goldencents he beat no one in his madien in the champagne he was ahead of who??? horses who all are off the trail or ahvent impressed yet. So i see he ebat itsmyluckyday and bern identy? so yea

Personally, I am reserving my judgment of ISAN until after the LA Derby. Desormeaux changed his running tactics for the Risen Star, so I would like to see if that was the real reason for the improvement or if the RS was just a fluke.

Going out on a limb there w/ Palace Malice, rafi. Good to see. A few I'd throw off and on would be ISAN off, we hardly see longshots like that come back and win. Departing on, he has to be one of the best semi under the radar's out there. I wouldn't have a problem dropping Bobby as well. With IMLD and Orb probable for the FL Derby, SB may not even make the derby. I'd drop him for Demonic or Revolutionary. Sorry wasn't slaggin' your picks:)

Nice list! Seems like you have lots of wise crackers and nobdy willing to put up or shut up. So heres my list. 1) Flashback 2) Orb 3) Balance the Books 4) Itsmyluckyday 5) Uncaptured 6) Vyjack 7) Verrazanno 8) Palace Malice 9) Dens Legacy 10) Revolutionary 11) Code West 12) Oxbow 13) Normandy Invasion 14) Goldcents 15) Fortify 16) Treasury Bill. We have 8 horses that are different. I cant recall a derby in recent years that was so wide open in early March. We could all come up with a different #1 on our list

@tcglory. First of all, Tiz The Truth is back in training, and was never off the trail. Second, there is no such thing as a "terrible" list, imo. The fact you say "Your list is not good b/c it isn't like the expert's picks." WTF is that? Everyone has a different list. At least I

Sorry. At least I am not a loser hiding behind a computer screen, trashing other's picks, too wimpy to post their own. @PP. Yes. I m going out on a limb with Palace Malice. We are in March. Tcglory acting like these picks are "wrong" or "terrible" is ignorant. I really liked Palace Malice's last performance. He came from behind the pace, and showed new dimension. Had trouble in the stretch (bumped, drifted, lugged), looked very green. Palace Malice, imo, is one that will dramatically improve with experience. As for Revolutionary, I know I am in the minority. However, I don't think breaking slowly is a good attribute for the derby, nor is traffic prone. Notice tcglory is laughing at me, and laugh at me all you want... But, personally, while Revolutionary is a good colt, I don't think the derby conditions will fit him. Good horse, good pedigree. Like him a lot, not for derby. @Buds. Thank you. I agree completely. Lots of wise cracks by people who won't put their list out. I like your list, wish you the best in the wagering aspect down the line, and during the trail. @URR. I put Bern on there just for you, lol. :)... Hopefully he can return with a bang. Is he a G1 horse? I don't know. But, for sure, if healthy he will be a good colt down the line at whatever distance. Good luck to all during the trail.

That was a gutsy call to leave both Overanalyze AND Vyjack off this "Pre-Gotham" list... I LIKE IT! WHY? Since when does one's "Derby List" have to include those that are "likely" to break from the starting gate on the 1st Saturday in May? My list (GQ's Derby Double Dozen, from Feb. 9th) doesn't have many of those who will likely RUN for the roses, rather my intent was who IMHO could WIN the race (if they happen to be good enough or sound). Less than 60 days from the Derby, what do people expect? Bravo you your effort.

After looking at the rankings, I conclude the list is most likely made up of how much times you post a play of the day? B/c me, tessaglia, gelded all post POTD's, but Jarrod would be #1, b/c he posts them the most. idk. PP, I'll try to get an oaks list. Tomorrow I am most likely off work b/c of snow Yipee!!! So I might make a list tomorrow.

He did it. He's been my favorite since February when I saw him greenly come home in the Risen Star. He's impressed me because of how green he was and how much he kept fighting. He had no chance in the Derby, but I think he could have contended (as I said afterward the Derby)... Tcglory, you look stupid now. Not that you don't always.

He looks stupid because your pick for the Derby won the Belmont? Or because no one in your top ten for the Derby finished in the top ten for the Derby? Not so much... I had Oxbow and LD in a box for the Derby future bets, and it came in the Preakness. Means nothing, the box made me $0. You pick PM to win the Derby and he won the Belmont, means nothing.

Is the 2013 Kentucky Derby Winner an N2L?
Since the turn of the century six Kentucky Derby winners have entered the Derby Trail eligible for a non-winner of two lifetime (N2L) race. These six horses did not win their second race until their three year-old campaign.

Big Brown's year was exceptionally weak and he easily ran the most brilliant Derby prep in the Florida Derby. Also, while most of these horses didn't win their second race till their three year old year, there were several that ran in stakes company at two. IHA was second in the Best Pal to Creative Cause. He went out with an injury after the Hopeful, a race run on a horrilbe track, so he was forgotten when he came back at three. MTB had a good 2yr old year, was a champion in Canada even. Super Saver, impressive at two, won KJC. Barbaro, also impressive and a stakes winner at two, alebit, not on dirt yet. Smarty, stakes winner at 2. Funny Cide, another unbeaten stakes winner at two. War Emblem had no stakes wins, but had stake experience at 2, as well as two wins. So, out of 13 Derbies, only three horses, FuPeg, BB, and Monarchos have gone to win the Derby w/o prior stakes exp. Remember, BB was pointed for stakes at two, but was injured, so his late start was no exactly due to a slower growth. 5 total, out of 13, not even half the Derby winners since 2000 didn't get their second win until they were three. Two were due to injuries that sidelined them for most of their juvenile season. So, when one thoroughly looks at the facts of this, it would seem Juveniles can and do still carry their form over as three year olds. Would anyone argue that IHA wasn't a promising 2yr old? Impressive maiden, ran into Creative Cause and sill ran a good second. Only bad race was over a mucked up track. Big Brown turned heads with his maiden, alibit on turf, but nonetheless he was very impressive. He then was sidelined due to his hoof issues. So, in all there are only 3 legit cases, out of 13, that one can really use to support this piece. So, in conclusion, the N2L list is not the place to look.

cocoa, "Steroids" are part of a group of chemically related substances that are varied in their natural uses within the body. Glucocorticoids are frequently used in medicine as anti-inflammatory agents; anabolic steroids are androgenic/masculinizing and were probably widely misused in racehorses in the U.S. until their ban in 2008. Here's a link explaining the chemical group known as steroids. http://www.chemistryexplained.com/St-Te/Steroids.html

Add to the fact that many are now given as repository meds with a granular structure that has continual release over weeks after an injection. I have seen superficial ulcertaions at injection sites too close to the sking.....Soluble steriods have a much shorter effect.

goblin, while steroids are certainly abused and that is bad, there are cases when they are needed. I'm sure Paynter received steroids. Imagine he wasn't a G1 winner though, and he was a claimer. The horse would essentially be dog meat. Now perhaps the claimer got too large a dose, or too many doses, that's abuse. But just healing the horse, and keeping him fit - not dosing him every week but perhaps once in his life, that I'm fine with.

I see I was delivered some presents while I was at the library. My last comment is correct as testified by several slaughter truckers. Canada has too many rules, they say. Mexico too few. Canada has standards and horses go through intense quarantine to be able to be slaughtered. All drugs and wormings must be documented by licensed persons. http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-90-288/

Travel_Vic, Since the poly was installed, 4 horses have made deep closes to win. Dominican, Brilliant Speed, Dullahan and Java's war. Monba was on the front end, Stately Victor was mid pack, never more than 5 off and only 3 off at the top of the lane. So while I will agree that horses making such moves, on poly or dirt have a difficult time doing that again in the Derby, it's not the poly that is to blame or the Bluegrass. It's a tough way to win a derby period. And if Java should win then that move goes to a 25% at Keeneland, which suddenly wouldn't make it such a bad thing. The only horses to successfully pull off a deep move and win the derby in this time period are Mine That Bird, who was only successful on poly before the derby and Street Sense who lost by a nostril in the Bluegrass on Poly. In the last 6 years, the Bluegrass has produced 1 winner and two 3rd place finishes in the Derby. I think only the Arkansas Derby and the Santa Anita can boast a better record. The Bluegrass results are not irrelevant since 2007, and yes that deep move is difficult to pull off in the Derby period, but it was Street Sense from the Bluegrass who did it best. Your 6 year survey is aboot to be turned on it's head by Java's War. TIme to get on the "eh" team!

Too bad my comment to Armada was sensored. The day rafi starts thinking for himself, people might actually take him seriously. The day he actually wins like he does he'll be handicapper of the year. Have you ever seen him post amounts bet, or any exact plays and then seen them come in? I've seen only a few, the majority would have to be his never ending annoying $97.86 bets that pay $265 dollars so he makes $168 profit and then brags about it. << not a great attitude

Jay, said the same thing. I still trying to figure out whats the matter if Rafi posts his picks, winners or losers? Who the **** cares?!?! Let the man have his say. Rafi, like most on here enjoy rooting for the picks; he doesn't trash other people's picks etc. I've never read one indecent post from Rafi. He only gets upset w/ others when they falsely accuse him of being a fraud. Its not like he's on here bragging about how much $$$ he makes. You people need serious help, and you know very well who you are. I'm not going to waste my time pointing fingers, for that will just feed your need to be that much more irrational - "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That!"

Thanks for your reply, Mary. I guess its none of my biz. Its unfortunate this all is transpiring day after day. We're basically a small community(everydayers) thats not representing each other well, and it makes us all look bad. I can see new fans coming on here, and going "ooooKay, I think I'll go back to just reading the racing form, now!" I hope you folks work things out, and god forbid C2 starts to get along w/ everyone. I've read good stuff from all of you, please just keep that simple minus the drama. I'll admit, a few ppl have gotten underneath my skin at times, and my short temper has been ugly - the best thing to do is just go on about your business. Much easier said than done on here, I guess.

I think five of the six you mention have a decent shot to run big on Saturday, and obviously, I love Oxbow. The one I don't see is Den's Legacy. I mean Den's Legacy ... are we really talking about Den's Legacy here??? In all seriousness, I've been saying all along that Den's Legacy is best suited to rally in one-turn races. If he wins tomorrow ... I lose.

Good list of horses I would add Overanalyze and Palace Malice, although Im not sure the Ark woulda been a beter place for PM. It is interesting to see who will make the derby for these races are loaded with futures long shots. Ive Got Dens Legacy at 70-1, PM at 50-1 and falling sky at 75-1, so Id wont those three in!

War Academy is a very well-bred horse who didn't take much urging to win that OC last time. He's going to have faster early fractions this time with Divine Ambition and Falling Sky to his outside. He should get a clean trip; we'll see how that fast 8.5f translates to Oaklawn. I give him a good shot though.

To early to be picking any derby horses always a late bloomer in the bunch and this year their are alot of great colts! Patients is very important I learned that when I bet and won the 1998 derby with charismatic. Not only did I hit the win place show but I also hit the triple and also in the Preakness when he was 8to1.

You know NOTHING is off the board as a possibility until EACH and EVERY ONE of these colts have tried 9 furlongs at graded stakes levels.

Late bloomers are usually, however, those without the seasoning (5 races minimm) you want at Churchill on the first Saturday in May.

ruffianlover, D Wayne Lukas is a lot of things and one of those is old fashioned. Horses do need these preps and the more experienced horses usually end up on top. Conditioning also is a part of it.
