  • cigar · Unbridled's Song was awesome, offspring now too... just fragile. So, let's breed to the fragile... yea! · 66 days ago
  • medlocke · I'm really sorry to read this story. I really thought Dunkirk was starting to come around to his racing potential after the Belmont Stakes. I was looking forward to seeing him race a 4yr.old campaign. He was one of those colt's that once he got a few more races under his belt that the sky could have been the limit for. IMO. · 65 days ago
The third leg of racing’s Triple Crown has been the undoing of many champions aspiring for all-time greatness.  It is the site of many historical performances and it’s place in racing’s landscape as big and broad as the racetrack over which it’s contested.  Read More
Trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed that Quality Road will return to the scene of his finest hour, Gulfstream Park, to open his 2010 campaign in the Grade 3 Hal's Hope Handicap on opening day, Jan. 3. Quality Road moved to the top of the 3-year-old division last spring with his impressive victory in the...Read More

  • Rossington · arazi, you're absolutely correct with that statement. He was complaining after Quality Road set the track record in the Florida Derby, and a couple more track record's had been broken that day. He made the comment that if he had known Gulfstream was going to be that fast he would've taken Dunkirk up north to Aqueduct I believe, for the Wood Memorial I'm assuming he was talking about. I doubt he would've fared much better there as I Want Revenge ran a great race in the Wood. Breaking very late, and then running down the field to win if you'll remember. · 89 days ago
  • Rossington · With that said arazi, I am a fan of Quality Road, and I'm happy he's going to be back in the game soon. I still think we've yet to see the best out of him, although it seem's to me that Quality Road responded better to Jimmy Jerkins than he has Todd Pletcher. JMO. But he's still unproven at 1-1/4. I don't know how long the Hal's Hope Handicap is, but I do hope he get's that 1-1/4 monkey off of his back soon. If he ever does, and start's to build confidence, I think he'll be very tough to beat. JMO. · 89 days ago
Just read on DRF that Dunkirk is scheduled for his first comeback work at Palm Meadowns on Dec 14th or 15th.
  • arazi · Oh, yes... Dunkirk, I remember him... the wonder horse? · 94 days ago
  • cigar · Everyone is quick to rail on Dunkirk, but he ran second to the very talented Quality Road and then despite a bad Derby experience, led all the way in the Belmont until the end. Yeah, he's not Cigar, but he's useful. I look forward to his return. · 93 days ago
(From NYRA) Dunkirk, a brave second to Summer Bird in the June 6 Belmont Gr. I), continues to recuperate nicely in his stall from surgery to insert a screw in a non-displaced condylar fracture in his left rear cannon bone. Read More
All the obvious thoughts on this year’s bizarre, but memorable Triple Crown have been discussed regarding the major players. But there were unsung heroes as well who did not wind up in the winner’s circle, yet contributed to the memories.Read More
Dunkirk exited Saturday's runner-up finish in the Belmont S. (G1) with a non-displaced condylar fracture in his left hind cannon bone and will likely be sidelined the rest of the year. Read More

  • mshutty · Well, so much for my prediction that Dunkirk and Summer Bird will prove to be better horses than Mine That Bird as we get into late Summer and Fall racing. You have to have all four legs working to run and apparently Dunkirk wasn't durable enough to sustain his bid. Very unfortunate for Dunkirk but great for the "Birds" (Summer and Mine That) connections. Birdstone will be well-represented in the Summer and Fall classics. · 279 days ago
Belmont S. (G1) second-place finisher and early pacesetter DUNKIRK (Unbridled's Song) showed no signs of fatigue Sunday morning at trainer Todd Pletcher's barn. Dunkirk set the pace through a mile before dropping back, then coming back again to finish ahead of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mine That Bi...Read More
On D-Day, a colt named Dunkirk put up the fight of his life down the sandy stretch at Belmont Park. After leading nearly all of 11/2 miles in the June 6 Belmont Stakes, the rangy Todd Pletcher trainee -- a $3.7 million auction purchase -- was passed by a late-closing Summer Bird. But his gritty batt...Read More
  • Duvalier · Gotta give Dunkirk credit...he showed alot of heart, battling back inside of Mine That Bird to regain second after being passed in the stretch...this after he set some pretty good fractions early on. · 281 days ago
  • mshutty · Agree! Dunkirk inherited the lead, cut decent fractions and came on again like Silver Charm in the stretch. This colt has some courage and character. We'll hear more from this one in the months ahead · 281 days ago
1. This track will eat you up. We should all be used to this by now. For the last 30 years, when something has been on the line at Belmont, there has been nothing to count on but disappointment. Eleven times since 1979 -- seven times in the last 12 years -- a horse has come to New York with a shot a...Read More

So, we’re expected to believe that the strong Belmont Stakes day program will be run in the seam of the weather zone. At this point, I’d probably be willing to lay 7-5 on a fast track at 6:27 p.m. Saturday, but not one point higher.Today and Saturday, we’ll sketch out the 10 Belmont Stakes entrants ...Read More
Ok, I am officially smitten with Mine That Bird. I admit to being one of those misguided souls who paid no attention to him before the Kentucky Derby other than to comment what a beautiful mover he was. After the Preakness and seeing him on the Belmont track Thursday morning, I have to say in simple...Read More
In the Belmont, Velazquez rides Dunkirk, the third choice at 4-1. The scenario is not unlike the 2007 Belmont Stakes. Velazquez had never ridden the Pletcher-trained Rags to Riches, but picked up the mount and won the Belmont aboard the filly who was owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, who are...Read More

The two key figures in the pace scenario for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes are Miner's Escape and Charitable Man. The former will be a longshot in the field of 10, while Charitable Man was made the 3-1 second choice behind Mine That Bird. So, let’s see how this may play out...Read More
  • mshutty · Excellent analysis of the Belmont Stakes likely pace scenario by Steve Haskin. I think he has the two early leaders nailed down. There is no doubt in my mind that the Zito barn is sending Miner's Escape. I believe Steve's estimate of where Dunkirk will be sitting early is interesting. He has decent trackable cruising speed, so if the pace is slow he'll find himself closer to the leaders than is being projected but without compromising his late punch. Agree, however that I would prefer he sits about 5 lengths off early closing that gap to two lengths behind about mid final turn. · 284 days ago
