Nobody seems to want to invest the time or money into the babies that take a little longer to come into their own. Its too early to tell this year, but at some point there will be some high profile 2 year olds that win G1's that dont even make this big dance in May because of no point accumulation in March/April of their three year old year. marylandgq · Drosselmeyer made me a rich man when he won the BC Classic. He was one of the few in that race truly bred to go 9f. Obviously, the "Speed Freak" Cappers took a bath. THANK GOD someone has finally realized that if you want an opportunity to have a horse capable of getting the Classic distance (and be a realistic Triple Crown contender), they'll need a larger dose of stamina then the majority of the runners turned out over the past 30+ years. · 133 days ago ·

Mike in SB · Another problem with the loss of stamina in the breed is the continuing shortening of the major races. This is a real problem, primarily in New York. Remember when the Gold Cup was 2 miles or even 1 1/2 miles and Saratoga now runs two 1 1/8 mile Grade One races, the Whitney and the Woodward. Instead of changing the race distance to suit the breeders, the tracks need to reward breeders for producing horses capable of running at the Classic distances. New York could start by making the Woodward a 1/14 mile race. By the way Drosselmeyer is a great looking horse! · 133 days ago ·

dani.pugh · I thinke we'll start seeing more distance soon. Look at sires like Street Cry and AP Indy. Both have sons that were proven at 10f time and time again, and are ready to take up the mantle. Curlin could be a good distance influence as well. There are plenty of high profile sires out there who can put a dose of stamina in the breed. Didn't Darley also get Lonhro? Breeders do, also breed to theses horses. Some do not, and some do breed for speed, but there are look at the way major breeding operations have gone. Adena Springs stands a good few stallions that were capable of 10f plus. Gainesway stands a Belmont winner, Derby winner, Travers winner, and one of Bernardini's most brilliant sons. Lanes End, while has it's fair share of sprinter/milers also has an impressive list of classic, distance lovers. Yes, there are some horses that are not bred to be sound, to be durable, but as you can see there are plenty of breeding operations that stand distance influences. If you really want my opinion, stop putting all the blame on the breeders and put some on the trainers and the tracks. If a horse is not trained to withstand the rigors of a race then they won't hold once put into a race. Many trainers baby a horse, but that does more to hurt than help. They train for speed not stamina, so how is a horse who is trained to run 9f tops, supposed to stay well at 10-12f without fatigue or injury? Trainers don't like the distances, so tracks cut them. Are breeders at some fault...yes, but lets not forget that they are far from the only ones. · 133 days ago ·

Major European races have been at the same distances for upwards of 100 years, you don't see australian or Japanese tracks changing the distances of their major races every five years. You should know that part of handicapping a race is to "envision" how the race will be run, and that day/race I "envisioned" Drosselmeyer getting to the wire first AFTER "the rest of the field collapsed". If you have horse with stamina and soundness(foundation) breeders will eventually mix in speed(which the US is full of) which will produce some great colts/fillies. goblin · t_v, Current research (since the mapping of the equine genome) is beginning to hone in on the genes responsible for speed,etc., in the thoroughbred. Myostatin (MSTN) variants seem to be partially responsible, with the locus known for at least one. There is a test being marketed by at least one of the performance genetics companies. The test is for colts/fillies already "on the ground", not as a predictor for the breeding shed. Here is a link to one of the studies--done by a group from the UK I think. That same day at Gulfstream, one of my two sons (Rafi) and I were at the finish line. Next to us were a father with a little munckin, maybe 8 or 9 with him. His father goes to make a bet, and I ask the kid "Hey, which horse do you have?" The munchkin says "I got #1." He seemed like he knew a lot :) So, I went to bet #1, $3 across. The name was "Brother Pat" and he won! I love seeing little ones at the track. In Gulfstream, so moany kids were there it was a pleasure to see. · 139 days ago ·

yayasister · As a very brand new green owner, here are my thoughts and observation: 1) people think horse racing is cruel. they have no specifics. they just assume it is. 2) people don't realize you can bet for less than a dollar or that you can spend about 20 bucks and have a fun day 3) people think you have to be filthy rich to be an owner. They don't know about partnerships and syndicates. What I have also learned is that new owners are welcomed and wanted! The old timers WANT to teach a new generation so that the sport can continue. believe me, I have been spreading the word and now have friends come to the track to see me. it is been the ride of a lifetime. yayasister · On December 29th, my horse, Pure Cajun was running at Fair Grounds. I was in the owner's circle. i kept hearing my name yelled. I turned around and two people were waving to me from the balcony at Fair Grounds. It was my friend's husband and her mom. The lady handicapper (Katie Mickalay sp?) was making her brodcast and my friend's mom (I havent seen them in about 4-5 years) yells: "Good luck! I like your horse, I put some money on him." and I yelled back, "Thanks, Miss Lena"... and I have a distinctive New Orleans accent. I kept wondering in people watching the race on the internet could hear all of that. lol. One of my partners was like... "what is this? What's going on.." and I said, "they are here for me". lol. thatbigbay · When people think of the racetrack, what tends to come to mind are gambling-addicted degenerates, animal cruelty at its peak, and dirty facilities. While the game certainly needs reform in numerous areas, few of these stereotypes are ever true! At the racetrack, I have met some of the nicest, most open-hearted, giving people that I believe I will ever meet. I have had people offer their seat to me on a busy day, take me up to the press box and the announcer's room, offer to bring me to the paddock to meet people, and even (and I accepted!) give me a free partnership in a horse. A lot of the facilities are out of the 1950s and need enormous updating. A great many changes are going to be made to the facilities at the three tracks to improve the fan experience. Tracks like Oaklawn are partnering with local TV channels to improve their coverage. Emerald Downs is engaging a top media agency to promote the track. More races would shown in prime time if you have a popular horse. 60 minutes did two programs on Zenyatta. Horses that capture the publics imagination help sell thoroughbred racing. But with the problems in Ontario, Cuomo signed a bill that will make it easier to bring their horses here to qualify for NY bred races. I believe you will have more horses and stud farms opening in NY but you will also have more horses racing at the NY tracks to take advantage of the large purses. With more horses in the races, you get more wagering money as well. Previously, there wasn't enough money to make needed upgrades to the track facilities. Saratoga needed huge improvements to the traing track which they will get. The problem with Belmont getting upgrades was tht under Spitzer and under govs who wanted to close Aqueduct and race year round at Belmont which would have required huge expenditures. · 138 days ago ·

You are seeing more studs moving from not slots jurisdictions to those with larger purse money for their offspring. Tracks in these stakes, I am thinking of harness racing in particular, are seeing more entries, better horses fuller racing cards, more fans and better handle. It won't happen overnight but within a reasonable period of time I also feel we will benefit from fuller (and better) fields, creating superior wagering opportunities for the day to day player. Rather than the poor quality of animal that shipped into A last winter and lets face it handle not head count is what drives the business. I think that the owners and breeders need to change the rush to the breeding shed which has decimated the ranks of top horses. I do think there is a glimmer of hope that things are changing in that regard. Whether you like Dr. Hansen or not, his racing Hansen at smaller tracks attracted a large number of fans and was a shot in the arm for racing. I also think that the situation in Ontario will in an odd way help in this direction. The removal of slots monies is devastating the industry up north. They had forgotten about attracting the fans and the wagering dollars and instead relied on the slots monies. All of these jurisdictions with slots monies are or have seen the govt try and take more of the money and realize that they must use this money to improve marketing and improve their facilities. · 137 days ago ·

I look at The Meadowlands and see the huge commitment that Jeff Gural has put into the track. Their handle is up over 28% from last year. While I am sure he would like to have slots monies to help fuel his purses, he is managing to make a real difference. I think that with changes in advance wagering and more states allowing it, it is helping. She gave her report showing how she presided over a multi million dollar and subsequent lawsuits was applauded and basically removed and left as affirmative window dressing while a new board with Bobby Flay and the head of betting oversight whose name escapes at the moment and others run the new board. I agree that NYRA has a long way to go, but it is a start. As to Ellen MCclain, lets be honest Hayward picked her on purpose to cover his tracks in the looting of the NYRA. You could also do what Oaklawn attempted to do for the 2010 Apple Blossom and offer huge bonuses to attract matchups. A cold, calculated, accountant wearing green eye-shades kind of system would virtually take all the fun of the debate out of the awards process! Let's face it, messy as it is, those who are qualified to vote -- the DRF, the Turf Writers/Broadcasters, and the NTRA -- are very well qualified to make their choices based on whatever criteria they want to apply. If we relegated the awards to some dry point system, what's the fun in that! Actually, I happen to think that the debate, the differences of opinions is fun and good for the sport. It makes the process more messy, but who wants to have awards handed out by a computer? Nah, leave it alone. The horse with the most points at the end of the year is your winner, no matter the division. Should a turf horse that would normally be scratched from a race in which the turf was yielding or soft be given a bonus if it runs and wins on that surface as opposed to firm turf? As we all know some historic G-1 races have been somethig less than G-1 quality in recent years. Make the BCC the end all for points. The upside would be barring injury you would have to show up and play and if the Breeders Cup is billed as the World Championship then campaigns culminatiing there could be planned and there would be no excuse for standing in your stall if you expected to win HOY. · 536 days ago ·

If everything were dependent on HOTY, Curlin, RA, and Zenyatta would have never won HOTY. If points are used make the BCC and it's accompanying races worth a bit more than lets say the Woodward, Bing Crosby or Suburban, but not so much as to invalidate a seasons worth of racing. If a horse is injured and out and was by far the best horse, has the most points becuase it was clearly the most dominant then it's not their fault they got injured. If a horse, such as Rachel has a spectacular campaign one should not ask more when a horse has set so much history thoughout a season. The BC is great but should not be valued more than anything else because then you just reduced it all to preps. It is not fair to creat one set of races higher than another. Before the BC this school of thought wasn't taken. There were races of prestige, but nobody saved their horses for one day. The award has been dimished as have a great number of former American Classic races which have been shortened to accomodate the current racing "stars" and what is now considered spectacular. However, for arguments sake, lets say they would let go on, then they would need to make more challenge races. For instance have the Foster, Whitney, Woodward, JCGC, Big Cap, Holywood Gold Cup, Pacific Classic and Goodwood, and some of the big 3yr year old races like the TC and Haskell and Travers. The U.S. has certainly gone speed crazy, a fact that is evidenced by the number of speed records being broken on a constant basis. Afleet Alex and Drosselmeyer are very good candidates to potentially help alleviate the lack of stamina. Since Afleet Alex did not race after winning the Belmont, he is a bit of an unknown in that department; but Drosselmeyer's best races have arguably been at 9 furlongs or longer. · 476 days ago ·

The biggest races on the calendar for older horses and late-year 3yo races should be at 12 furlongs or more.
