One way to look at Creative Cause’s third place finish as the 1-2 favorite in Sunday’s San Vicente at Santa Anita is that it was the perfect prep, just enough to knock the rust off while setting him up for a successful stretch back out to two turns, around which he won the Grade 1 Norfolk and was a ...Read More

  • francis · I know someone who was @ Santa Anita Sunday. He said Creative Cause blew by Drill & the 2nd place finisher right after the wire, & Rosorio couldn't get him pulled up until the 1/2 mile pole. · 9 hours ago ·

  • likin sparks · Sorry to hear this and just when he thought he was figuring out this stubborn guy (Drill), he may find keeping this horse at the same distance or under a mile may be a big mistake. Still think the horse needs to visit a farm for awhile then get back into the game. · 1 day ago ·

  • Floridaf · I'm not even sure what his best distance actually is at this point. So far, he's been all over the board, but all of his wins have come at 7 furlongs on shorter. He did finish 2nd at a mile and a sixteenth, but he was 3 1/4 lengths behind Creative Cause. Right now, I do tend to agree with Baffert that one-turn races are probably best for Drill. · 1 day ago ·

Not sure what to make of Drill. One day he's not running a step and the next he's taking a GII. But I have to say, I think he's beautiful. He certainly looked tremendous in the post parade before the San Vicente.
Looks like Bob is starting to figure this guy out, just let him do whatever he wants and he'll give you a win. Two key factors stated were to ease up on workouts and just let him run however he wants in the race...whatever works.
Drill wins the San Vicente Stakes by a nose. American Act was 2nd and Creative Cause was 3rd

I didn't think this horse has any skill, however his last performance wasn't too awful. Maybe if Baffert runs him like the G2 Winner he is and not a claimer he might get somewhere.
Way to go Drill!!!!
Drill is back!
  • GregRiessland · hell yes! i thought he has beat creative cause before and ran well at santa anita, that he would have a real shot. despite his lack of hitting the board each race he slightly improved from his major fall in the bc jv. yes he lost, but he stepped up from each length showing a slow recovery with each race. most horses go off on big odds that do that. i see there was still the fear of drill to come back. · 3 days ago ·

Judging from the post race interview with Baffert, it sounds like he's finally figured this horse out. Could improve further.
