Any word on what's next? I would love to see her race against the boys in the Belmont. Despite her back luck, her run in the Oaks was extremely impressive.

Dressage3295 · If you think she couldn't compete, you need to go back and watch the race instead of glancing at the finishing order. DOJ was an INCREDIBLY game filly in the Oaks. The fact that she could have so many things against her- TERRIBLE start, running into walls of traffic, having to be at the back of the pack instead of stalking it, etc.- and being up against the best three year old fillies in America, but STILL placing fourth and missing first by a few lengths makes me wonder what she could have done if everything had gone in her favor. One race does not determine the talent or lack of it for a horse. DOJ's career speaks of more good things than it does bad.. As for why I'd like to see her in the Belmont- she loves the track for one, she's never lost on it in her two starts there. She has speed, but also stamina I believe. Her running style fits the Belmont perfectly. If she goes, I think she can be a legitimate contender. · 12 days ago ·

rafirox · Mallios. I do like your posts, but did you even watch the race? She got mugged at the gate. She was ready to run, not play bumper cars. She got forced into an uncomfortable position (for her).. She was coming down the stretch like a rocket. She was by far the best filly in the field. I don't see why the filly vs. colt drama is needed. It is only in the United States where fillies and mares are treated as second class citizens. PACE is PACE, male or females. Are you telling me a 13 yr old girl, couldn't possibly outrun a 13 yr old boy? Pace is pace, it doesn't matter if it female or male. Julia wants distance. She screams it (She was opening 10 lengths in the stretch in the GP Oaks without urging and flying down the Churchill stretch). Her style fits the Belmont, her energy distirbution fits the Belmont, and she matches with the track profile. So, with all this said, why NOT run her in the Belmont? I'd love to see modern day connections (Stonestreet, who doesn't love them?) take a shot with their filly in a Triple Crown race.. @Dressage. Love that post. · 12 days ago ·

tmallios1 · raf and everyone else.she got bumped.look at the race carefully at the start.the winner was almost bent in half and was behind julia.down the back johnny rode julia hard.mike smith beat him to the spot.you can use the excuse if mike smith did not beat her with a tougher trip.julia is arguably one of the most overrated fillies .she ran 1 monster race in her life.it was against 4 fillies and she sat the wood .it was a monster inside bais.in her other big race ,the jeuvenile breeders cup.she did nothing.if you like her and root for her ,god bless you.but do not try to make her invincible because of those reasons.the belmont.just like rags to riches.you never saw her after that monster effort.like i said.like riches and julia.it is a pattern with pletcher horses.they run 1 huge huge speed figure race and then they dissapear.if anyone else but todd owned her,they would be laughed at.dressage,she never ran into trouble.she had nothing in the tank to make the move.you compare her to her florida race,when she had turbo jets on.maybe because of the extra scrutiny she was not able to accelerate.just like all the pletcher colts.amazing except for 1 who ran ok.the others followed suit.they were empty in the big race · 12 days ago ·

footlick · The winner did not have the best of trips. The fact that people bought into DOJ's huge figure, which as far as I know is the only huge figure she has ever run, and were even saying that she would have been competitive in the Derby, need to realize that one race does not make a horse superior. Repeated races at that level makes a horse superior. If she was as superior as many were making her out to be, the trip she got would not have prevented her from winning. If she couldn't run these fillies down, she would not have been competitive ion teh Derby, which is usually a race where many horses do not have perfect trips. Before calling her Rachel the second, why doesn't everyone just wait and see if she can even repeat her Gulfstream effort. Those who are questioning whether tmallios1 watched the race are ignoring other horses problems in the race. Both Beholder and Princess had problems and ran better. DOJ was expected to react to her Gulfstream effort. She did. She was a bad play anyway you look at it. Just my two cents. · 12 days ago ·

footlick · yes. One gr1 win at 8f, one gr2 win at 9f on a suspect track, meaning a track where certain horses freak over, does not make her competitive in the Derby when you look at it factually. I did not say she was not a nice horse. And we will see if she ever runs back to her Gulfstream race. But, she would never have been my pick in the Oaks nor the Derby. · 12 days ago ·

tmallios1 · it is funny.we are discussing dreaming of julia.all points made are fair.but folks,lets smell the coffee and wake up.all of us,me included.the true story and absolute star of the oaks was Princess Of Sylmar.she was amazing on friday.as i mentioned earlier,she was almost bent in half at the start.she dropped back to next to last.she moved down the backside.here is a filly used to running on or just off the pace.she came from the clouds to not only win,but she drew off.she did this against what everyone called the greatest oaks field ever assembled.we all have short memories.as great as orb was.a closer look shows she was the most impressive stakes winner this weekend.the fact she was not the so called "HYPED HORSE" has made people overlook her feat.i agreewith foot, i tossed her in the oaks also.i use sheets when i play.as i mentioned before the race.she ran the fastest speed figure race in the history of the sheets i use.personally,i think she desrves credit and surprised me as to how close she ran.but questioning her ability to run against the boys does not mean we hate her. · 12 days ago ·

bettorthanlucky · rafirox... I've always liked the old Kevin McHale quote after being blown out by the Lakers by 40 in a game one at the Garden... "You're never as good as you look when you win... and you're never as bad as you look when you lose" I think it is very true with horse racing too... I couldn't believe how easily Close Hatches handled POS in the Gazelle and totally reversed in the Oaks... I think DOJ may be the best filly (time will tell) but if there is a filly that is going to run all day it is POS... I would definitely take her at a mile and a quarter at this point... footlick · no problem. What you have to wonder is how long will it take her to recover from her race at Gulfstream. She certainly could become a great horse, but she is not yet. The example I would use is Easy Goer. He ran two races at Churchill and ran his two worse races there. He obviously didn't care for the surface. So with DOJ and Close Hatches, you have to just wait and see. Close Hatches was supposedly training sensationally, so it was either the surface or something else unknown. Just remember that Princess had trouble and Beholder threw a fit before the race, and they both fired regardless of the problems. I certainly would see what Todd does, but I personally will let her beat me the next time she runs because I can't predict how this race will effect her in conjunction with her previous race. tmallios1 · amino and footlick. footlick is correct,there has to be a reasonable recovery time.also,sometimes when they run as fast as she did.it is not automatic that they will recover.without being synical,it is also important where they run their big races.it seems todds horses all freak out high speed figures at gulfstream park.footlick ,you mentioned easy goer.i do not know how old you are or how far back you go.but in the late 80's and 90's .shug trained for the phipps stable.arguably the #1 stable in america at that time.with all the studs and superstars they had.rarely did they win arces outside of new york.if i am not mistaken,easy goer never won outside of new york.also who was chairman of the nyra board.none other than dinny phipps and his dad.so amino,fast horses run fast.but you really have to see where they run the races · 12 days ago ·

footlick · amino998- it is the thoro-graph figures and it has nothing to do with the chart. It has to do with how much faster the time was than the rest of the route races that day. The way I understand it, there are certain key horses running on any given card that they look at to see if they ran off races or their usual race.. There were many horses that would have run well below their average race if they didn't give her that number. I am not a thoro-graph expert, though and someone better versed can explain it better. Also I don't know when Jerry Brown first started making his figures. · 11 days ago ·

footlick · No, Jerry Brown the founder of Thoro-graph. The problem was that if they did not give her the number they did, the other horses, such as Orb, would have run at least two points slower and that was not logical. Plus her race was so much faster time wise. They did not think that the track slowed down that much, at least they could not find evidence of that. When you compare it to the other route races on that day, it was much better. That is the premise they had to go by. Those same horses ran on Derby Day or Oaks Day and won or ran well, so he feels that justifies his stance. You can take it for whatever worth you want. · 11 days ago ·

footlick · amino998- the crux of the problem is if you believe the track could have slowed down 2 full seconds. DOJ's oaks was just shy of 2 seconds faster. Cigar Street's time for his race was slightly faster than Orbs when you extrapolate an extra 16th. Both Authenticity and Take Charge Indy came back to run their numbers on Derby Day. So, they either had to decide that everyone ran about two points slower than they usually did, or that DOJ's race was that fast. Since I'm not n expert on Thoro-graph, that is just a simplistic version. Since Jerry isn;t backing down from that number, I don't know what else to say. It would be different if everyone on that card ran fast times, but the route races were much slower than hers on that day. That is all I can say. · 11 days ago ·

tmallios1 · amino.the problem with racing in general and results in super fast speed figures.note on their big days.it is always an inside speed bias track.that is because they scrape the surface with no regard to horse or jock.when julia ran that number.it was a conveyor belt.look at this past weekend.prior to the rains coming.the track friday was playing huge to speed and inside horses.yes closers won,but when there were speed duels.these tracks hurt horses legs.it is like running on concrete.same at aqueduct.when vyjack won the gotham off the pace.i was shocked because not that he was not good enough.but because all day,the track played monster inside speed.when he broke next to last,i thought that was it.same reason i loved overanylize in oaklawn.on the same day he was wide the entire trip.do you know how many winners you can come up with ,next out.if you pay attention to the inside or outside bias.this is just another disregard for horse and jock by the racing heads.they rather have souped up surfaces to insure track records and eye popping speed figures to over value these horse.that is why julia is not anywhere near as good as everyone thinks she is.he r 2 fast races came over gulfstream park. · 11 days ago ·

tmallios1 · i never pay attention that much to making my own numbers.gets to difficult.i play the bias.i also use bris pace sheets.i try to see how consistent they are with the regular sheet numbers.once in a while i might also look at beyer number.if all 3 show it consistent,i could accept.if not then you go by your gut.i see how this race stacks up.are there alot of speed horses in there.then it might set up for a closer.or vica versa.lack of speed.honestly,making speed figures is so subjective.that is why i really cannot use them for turf races.the premise for making numbers is to compare the variant on the races run that day.if that is the case.what happens if there is only 1 turf races.what are you comparing it to? how do you know if the turf was fast or slow.like i said.it is not a sdcience.when playing,if you have the flexibility to compare figures.i would strongly recommend it.of course everyone will say their figures are the best.remember, they sell the products.they do not give them away · 11 days ago ·

Dreaming of Julia

Great effort from DOJ after getting mugged at the start and then having to check at around the five eighths pole. To only get beat 2 1/2 lengths after that nightmare trip is a testament to how good she is. This didn't change my opinion of her one iota. I think she is still the best three year old in America male or female. Congrats to Princess of Sylmar on a great race.

Had she not have been squeezed all the way back, she would have been in her typically stalking position towards the outside without walls of traffic in front of her. Dressage3295 · There are few absolutes in this world, and your statement is not one of them. Most of the horses either had bad trips or starts, but none as terrible as DOJ's. It makes it that much worse because she was closing and missed by 2 1/2 lengths despite her God awful trip. cab2536 · While I like DOJ, I can't understand why people aren't crediting the winner. POS ran a great race and got a hall of fame ride despite also getting squeezed at the start. POS was positioned behind DOJ and Mike had to work out a trip. He did that better than Johnny -- that's all. Then got blocked again later on when two start backing into her. Really fought hard to close when she got running room, but still wasn't herself. bumped is one thing. Slammed broadside is another. Reminded me of Secretariat in his debut. He ran fourth too. orb's a nice horse but DOJ did run almost two seconds faster at the same distance, same track, same day.

Dreaming of Julia

I am a Secretariat fan...so that being said. If he rides her along the rail in 3,4,5 position until the 1/2 pole then works outside during the turn towards the middle of the track for the stretch, get the lilies ready...race over...if she runs up from and leads the pace...she will be on the inside for the stretch as Midnight Lucky and Close Hatches contesting...but still edge them out by 2 lengths, ML,CH

I watched the race- Dreaming of Julia won by 25 lengths. I was dissappoited to wake up and realize it was just a dream. Dang it, now even my dreams are screwing with me.

Southern.humor · I would not say Beholer 'spanked' her. Beholder ran good race, and won - but held all the advantages for that track. It was her home track , he didn't have to trvel late etc. Even back then DOJ was the one who impressed me. SHe got a very game third for only having two days to sclimte to SA, and also for it being her first tiem traveling. SHe has gotten over those little hiccups, and I have a very hard time seeing any one getting past her. · 18 days ago ·

tmallios1 · i was looking closely at the oaks.initialy i was looking at close hatches.but i kept coming back to midnight lucky.she is the only filly in the race that has not fired a big move yet.dreaming of julia.thorograph sheet wise,ran the fastest race ever recorded ,colts or fillies.she has made 2 monster moves in a row.if she repeats her last,she is a lock.i just can't see her really recovering from such an effort.unlimited budget made a big move forward in her last.lucky on the other hand has kept the course.i think she has the best shot of exploding on friday · 18 days ago ·
