  • LAZMANNICK · No argument from me. I might place Count Fleet a little higher. Two honorable mentions are Buckpasser and Round Table. If Buckpasser wouldn’t have been injured and would have competed in the TC races (the same year he won 13 in a row) I have no doubt he would have won the TC (he defeated the winners of all three races that year), and in doing so he would be considered probably in the top six or seven. Round Table raced in what is arguably the best three year old crop ever in N/A. He won carrying huge weights, at distances as short as 4F and as long as 13F, and was probably one of America’s all time best turf horses though he is possibly best remembered for his prowess on dirt. Certainly a great lot of horses. · 24 days ago ·

His 4 year old season was the greatest year any thoroghbred ever had.
A recent column by Horse Racing Nation's newest writer, Bill Heller, really got me thinking. In the piece, Heller told of his first ever trip to a thoroughbred racetrack. As luck would have it, him and his buddies were treated to one of Secretariat's earliest powerhouse performances. The race was th...Read More

  • MBPhipps · I recently rewatched the video of Secretariat winning the Belmont, and that brought me to tears...again. But I couldn't possibly decide on what I would have wanted my FIRST race horse experience to be. As it stands, I can't remember who it actually was! What I am grateful for though, is the fact that my years around the track have included visits to the winner's circle with some of the finest horses in their class the country. · 196 days ago ·

Who are the greatest horses of all-time? It’s amazing how such a seemingly simple question can elicit such a varying array of passionate answers. Some swear there will never be another like Man O’ War, while others think the more recent Big Red was the improved version. Read More

We have some people on the site who manipulate all the rankings so as to make their favorites go up, and they do it by ranking down great horses, as if this survey of the best horses of all time is all about them and their personal opinion. The list shouldn't be what you want it to be, it should be what all of us create.
The one race where Dr. Fager was challenged legitimately was the New Hampshire Sweepstakes when In Reality fought him down the stretch. In Reality was the 3rd best three year old that year.
No horse ever looked Dr. Fager in the eye and beat him. The only horses who ever finished in front of him had rabbits in the race. That includes Successor, Buckpasser and Damascus.
Great as he was, IMHO Dr. Fager is over-rated. He never learned to rate, and he never proved himself at 1 1/2 miles ("the test of the champion" in case you've forgotten). After the 1967 Woodward, if he had raced in the JCGC, Damascus would have beaten him like a cheap rug, Hedevar or no Hedevar.

  • footlick · Dr Fager had that weakness at two and three, and Damascus was probably a superior three year old, but at 4 Dr Fager was THE dominant force in racing. You cannot hold the fact that he didn't win at 12 furlongs against him as he was a sprinter/miler who was so brilliant that he could get 10 furlongs in top company. He didn't need to rate. He was as pure a front runner as Bold Ruler. · 335 days ago ·

  • Tigralvr · Dr. Fager never needed to rate. He needed only for his chief competition to race without rabbits as they could not have won without them. In the Champagne he was pushed to fractions of 22.0 and 44.0. In the Woodward he was pushed to 1:09.1 and in the Brooklyn he was pushed to 1:09.2 while carrying 135 lbs. In that great season he carried between 130 and 139 lbs. in each of his races. · 281 days ago ·

"The Doctor" was the only horse who ever held four titles in one year. That year was 1968, and he was voted the Horse of the Year, champion handicap horse, champion sprinter, and co-champion grass horse. I've just completed his past performance with a record of 22 18 2 1 Dr. Fager was truly a champion. If anyone has any videos they can add please do so.
Such a wonderful horse. Quite the champion!

  • footlick · Those three were the Creme de la Creme- oh wait, he finished third when Buckpasser set the WW for a mile. A side note, when it rained I thought Disciplinarian could jump up and give Dr Fager a run as he was a mudlark. Alas, when I got to the track it was puddly, but not muddy. The water wasn't even affecting it. So much for my mudlark-lol. · 328 days ago ·
