Time to get a little personal, and explain my shot temper and irratibility over the past week or so. I lost one of my favorite horses today. It was not a shock, but it has been a bit of a battle. As I reflect upon the good times I had with this horse it brought to mind another horse I was extremely close to, and who's passing was one of the hardest days of my life ... This one. When I was younger I was given the incredible opportunity to work under an incredible man by the name of Richard Mandella. As I started, being the bottom man on the totem pole, naturally I was given the horse that no one else really wanted to work with. A big bratty colt by the name of Dixie Union. And he was a brat, I literally to this day still have a scar on my hand from him biting the lead rope from me. As time went on how ever I began to build a relationship with the horse, and the horse with me. I learned his quirks what he liked and even more so what he did not. I was at all of his races cheering him on, celebrate when he won, and 'console' him when he lost. The connections and the horse gave me opportunities I never thought possible. I will always be thankful. As his carreer came to an end so did my work with the horses. I never kidded myself enough to believe that horse racing would be my life career. But I will always be thankful for what I did get. I was excited by the fact he would be going to a quality stud barn, and thay he had made a name for himself by the end. I even went to see him once (Little did I know then i'd be the last time I would be able to see him.) And found when I did, he promptly bit me on the hand. The day I found out he had passed was very, very difficult for me. As is my recent loss. But to Answer a question posted earlier, that I was not able to answer to answer at the time due to drudged up emotional anquish I will answer now . Who was the horse that really made me care for the sport? Dixie Union, he may not have been the best of his generation, but he will always be the best to me.
If you could create a dream foal from any two race horses in the past 20 years - Which pairing would you choose and why ? I am often made fun of - for telling friends that I would love a Dixie Union Top / WIth a Street Sense Filly foal bottom (Mare could be raced or not) Cross. I WOuld be a happy man if I were to ever get my hands on one, if the horse succeeded on the track or not.

It is completely possible to be emotionally connected a race horse, with out being delusional in reguards to their talent. I worked with this horse while he was still active, and while I always believed he was a strong runner, I would never declare him a winner untill he hit the finish line. Obviously I am very tied to the horse, but I would not argue he was the best of his time. (I was not the jockey -obviously- or anything , just a care taker )
