Older Comments about Dark Mirage...

Dark Mirage was a diminutive filly weighing 710 pounds. Her deaf dam had no ears and there was nothing but laughter at the 1966 Keeneland yearling sale when the race horse who resembled a Shetland pony stepped into the auction ring. The small package turned into a speedster, winning the first Filly Triple Crown by a combined 28 lengths. She placed second only to Dr. Fager for 1968 HOY in the colt’s record breaking year, bumping Damascus to third. Injured in the Santa Margarita Handicap when she jumped over a cellophane wrapper blowing on the track, she was retired and scheduled to be bred to the Good Doctor. Sadly the injury did not heal and the Tiny Tigress with the big heart was put down at age four.

  • yukichan · One of my heros growing up...still bittersweet knowing she had such a brief yet brilliant life. · 1453 days ago

A fantastic filly, with a small body, a big heart, and a ridiculous ranking. I'm sorry, I know the rankings don't matter but her rating is totally ridiculous.

  • rafirox · She was a unique, fantastic horse who had a very sad ending. One of the best of all time. · 1570 days ago
  • rafirox · ^^^^ BTW, I meant One of the best fillies/mares of all time, not horses. · 1570 days ago
Great horse... her life was cut to short she won 10 races in a row...
  • footlick · One of my all-time favorites · 1719 days ago
  • buckpasser · Like Footlick, this is one of the best fillies I ever saw race. She was tiny no bigger than 15 hands and she weighed less than 900 lbs. she was like a large pony. I saw her race in parts of the filly triple crown. Not only was she the first winner of the filly triple crown but she also won the zkentucky Oaks. Her dam was deaf and her sire was not well thought of and when she went through the sales ring, people laughed at her. She was a wonderful race horse and deserves more respect · 1719 days ago
First winner of the filly triple crown. She was a tiny horse, more of a large pony with a huge heart and a sad ending. She deserves better recognition

  • larooski · she broke down in a race. The Santa Margarita I think. She was roughed up at the start, then bolted on the first turn and broke down. I don't think she was put down until months later kind of like Barbaro. · 1793 days ago
