Floridaf · Between Drosselmeyer and Redeemed, the American racing industry should get a shot of distance IF the breeders send their mares to them. Nobody seems to want to invest the time or money into the babies that take a little longer to come into their own. Its too early to tell this year, but at some point there will be some high profile 2 year olds that win G1's that dont even make this big dance in May because of no point accumulation in March/April of their three year old year. marylandgq · Drosselmeyer made me a rich man when he won the BC Classic. He was one of the few in that race truly bred to go 9f. Obviously, the "Speed Freak" Cappers took a bath. THANK GOD someone has finally realized that if you want an opportunity to have a horse capable of getting the Classic distance (and be a realistic Triple Crown contender), they'll need a larger dose of stamina then the majority of the runners turned out over the past 30+ years. · 132 days ago ·

Mike in SB · Another problem with the loss of stamina in the breed is the continuing shortening of the major races. This is a real problem, primarily in New York. Remember when the Gold Cup was 2 miles or even 1 1/2 miles and Saratoga now runs two 1 1/8 mile Grade One races, the Whitney and the Woodward. Instead of changing the race distance to suit the breeders, the tracks need to reward breeders for producing horses capable of running at the Classic distances. New York could start by making the Woodward a 1/14 mile race. By the way Drosselmeyer is a great looking horse! · 132 days ago ·

dani.pugh · I thinke we'll start seeing more distance soon. Look at sires like Street Cry and AP Indy. Both have sons that were proven at 10f time and time again, and are ready to take up the mantle. Curlin could be a good distance influence as well. There are plenty of high profile sires out there who can put a dose of stamina in the breed. Didn't Darley also get Lonhro? Breeders do, also breed to theses horses. Some do not, and some do breed for speed, but there are look at the way major breeding operations have gone. Adena Springs stands a good few stallions that were capable of 10f plus. Gainesway stands a Belmont winner, Derby winner, Travers winner, and one of Bernardini's most brilliant sons. Lanes End, while has it's fair share of sprinter/milers also has an impressive list of classic, distance lovers. Yes, there are some horses that are not bred to be sound, to be durable, but as you can see there are plenty of breeding operations that stand distance influences. If you really want my opinion, stop putting all the blame on the breeders and put some on the trainers and the tracks. If a horse is not trained to withstand the rigors of a race then they won't hold once put into a race. Many trainers baby a horse, but that does more to hurt than help. They train for speed not stamina, so how is a horse who is trained to run 9f tops, supposed to stay well at 10-12f without fatigue or injury? Trainers don't like the distances, so tracks cut them. Are breeders at some fault...yes, but lets not forget that they are far from the only ones. · 132 days ago ·

Major European races have been at the same distances for upwards of 100 years, you don't see australian or Japanese tracks changing the distances of their major races every five years. You should know that part of handicapping a race is to "envision" how the race will be run, and that day/race I "envisioned" Drosselmeyer getting to the wire first AFTER "the rest of the field collapsed". If you have horse with stamina and soundness(foundation) breeders will eventually mix in speed(which the US is full of) which will produce some great colts/fillies. travel_vic · Having said that I KNOW genetics, and the archaic phenotype breeding is a complete crap shoot once the genes are ranmdomly redistributed in meiosis. Science has NO idea which genes or groups of genes of linked genes or operant genes create speed stamina etc. I doubt there is a single path, so breeding becomes a crap shoot. goblin · t_v, Current research (since the mapping of the equine genome) is beginning to hone in on the genes responsible for speed,etc., in the thoroughbred. Myostatin (MSTN) variants seem to be partially responsible, with the locus known for at least one. There is a test being marketed by at least one of the performance genetics companies. The test is for colts/fillies already "on the ground", not as a predictor for the breeding shed. Here is a link to one of the studies--done by a group from the UK I think. Many genetic qualities are augmented or retarded by operator genes that come with the specific gene is question. icyhotboo · The thing about undefeated in any sport no one knows what the limitation is until defeat happens, let him run. I took a glance at the form and may include him underneath in the exotics. This race has the potential for a big payout. I can't see Union Rags with that enormous stride and a savy jockey losing but it could happen thus my lucky numbers will be in play. $10 on #8 plus staight $2 exacta plays ( all bithdays) 2/8-2/6-1/12-3/8- 1/7-7/2-4/7 oh well gl to me I'll need it. · 349 days ago ·
