  • Buckpasser · @Eurotrash and @jonquil. I was very upset to see her grave at the Horse Park as well. Frankly it spoiled an otherwise enjoyable day there for me. I remember her dam very well, Priceless Gem. I saw her beat Buckpasser in the 1965 Futurity and watched as Patrice Jacobs led her into the winners circle that day. Of course she would later marry Louis Wolfson of Affirmed fame. When I was at the Kentucky Horse Park, I asked if they had a guide to the graves of all of the horses buried there. I found that they did not have one. Something I think is remiss because such a guide could enlighten so many to the exploits of not only Allez France, but others whose exploits have been forgotten. · 219 days ago

In your opinion, what was the best crop of all time? I think 1970's crop was the best because of the incredible quality AND quantity that was developed. Secretariat- One of if not he greatest racehorse of all time. He won the 1973 Triple Crown, beating Sham, he broke the track record in the Kentucky Derby while running each quarter faster than the last, he showed incredible acceleration in the Preakness and he obviously romped the Belmont by 31 lengths will trashing the record. He went on to a solid three year old season and appeared to be better on the turf! Forego- Probably one of the top 10 racehorses of all time. Winning the Malboro Cup carrying tons of weight! He was so agile and flexible, he could run any race against top competition. Sham- Despite losing to Secretariat, he too beat the Kentucky Derby track record. He was a pretty good horse that could have won the Triple Crown if not for Secretariat. Dahlia- Very good racemare who competed against the best of the best. She won stakes races all over the world and unlike MOST top racemares; she duplicated her performances in the shed. Our Native- Was a decent horse with an ok record. Linda's Chief- Owned California from 1972-1974 and I've heard MANY experts say that he could beat Sham. Stop the Music- Pretty good racehorse and remains in many blood today... Forgetting anyone? On Bloodhorse Top 100, this crop alone has #2 Secretariat, #8 Forego, and #50 Dahlia. Pretty impressive.

  • goblin · Gen. Duke, Clem, Barbizon, and Federal Hill should be added to those above--here is a nice, fairly concise piece on Bold Ruler. http://www.spiletta.com/UTHOF/boldruler.html · 572 days ago
  • Buckpasser · Also add the Derby winner Iron Liege to the 1954 crop too. · 572 days ago
Maybe the greatest traveler ever with stakes wins in France, Ireland, England, America and Canada

  • buckpasser · I think Allez France is better than Dahlia only because what out of seven meetings between them Dahlia never finished ahead of Allez France. And if the Arc is the great race, then Allez France won that over the best in Europe · 676 days ago
  • amino998 · OTG- Yes. Head to head records count for something. Seems your strawman “Best American filly ever” might not even be the best of her crop. · 676 days ago
Very tough mare with little current attention paid to her.
  • protagonist · I agree with you Larry, Dahlia was awsome back in the 70's , she even beat the boys . Just as these newcomers talk about Zenyatta, back then there were fantastic fillies and Dahlia was one of them. I think I hear Striesand warming up with "The Way We Were". looking back brings back some fond memories! · 1189 days ago
  • protagonist · Yes Larry, Dahlia was awsome in her day( 70's) She even took on the boys and defeated them as well. Just as Zenyatta has done recently. Thinking of her Dahlia brings back some fond memories,of all of the great horses and horsemen that we had around back then. · 1189 days ago
