D' Funnybone really threw in a clunker in the Withers...
I agree with Rossington. D'Funnybone doesn't have the distance experience, but Prado does, and Prado can pace himself no problem. It is very true that D'Funnybone has more experience than most Derby hopefuls on dirt, so why not give it a shot? I love his name too! -z02
  • rossington · That's a fact. Start looking at some of these Derby hopefuls, and D' Funnybone, and I'd also have to say Rule, have a much experience of conventional dirt as any of the contenders do. I also think that anyone who took Rule off of their top 10 Deby list is making a mistake, just because he ran 3rd in the Florida Derby. I'm not saying that I think that Rule will win the Kentucky Derby, but I won't at all be surprised to see him finish in the mone. TJMO. · 2582 days ago
Personally, if Rick Dutrow doesn't send D' Funnybone to Churchill Downs for the 2010 Kentucky Derby, I think he's out of his mind. This colt has 4 Stakes wins on 3 different conventional dirt tracks, and a place effort to Jackson Bend at Calder in July, just nailed at the wire in the Frank Gomez Stakes. He's won the Hutheson Stakes and the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The Saratoga Special at Saratoga Racecourse, and the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park. And he'd looked pretty dominant in all of his Stakes wins to date. His only poor showing was on the poly at Santa Anita as a 2yr.old in the 09' B.C. Juvenile. But this colt has "eaten up" conventional dirt tracks. I think Dutrow has an issue with whether or not D' Funnybone can get 1-1/4 or not, but no one know's going to Churchill if their colt is going to last 1-1/4 or not. D'Funnybone has got one of the best dirt resume's of any of the 2010 Kentucky Derby hopefuls. If I'm Dutrow, distance questions or not, I'm taking a shot at the roses with this guy. JMO.
IMO, one of the most rapidly improving 3yr.old Kentucky Derby prospects in racing right now. A bettors dream, a horse that loves conventional dirt, and has proven he knows how to win on it. Winning the Swale Stakes today, gives D' Funnybone 4 different Stakes win's on 3 different conventional dirt tracks. The Hutcheson Stakes and Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The Saratoga Special at Saratoga, and the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park. A pretty nifty resume' to have going into Churchill Downs in May. He may still go off at a bit of a price as well, with colts like Lookin At Lucky, Eskendereya, Rule, and Awesome Act carrying bigger reputations than D' Funnybone. I'll certainly be using him on an Across The Board ticket for one of my 2010 Kentucky Derby picks. He also, in July, ran an excellent 2nd in the Frank Gomez Stakes at Calder Racecourse. Nailed at the wire by a flying Jackson Bend, during the period that Jackson Bend had swept the Dr.Fager, the Affirmed, and the In-Reality Stakes and won the Florida Stallion Series at a time when Jackson Bend was unbeatable at Calder. His only poor lifetime performance was in the 2009 B.C. Juvenile, finishing last of 13, clearly not liking the Santa Anita synthetic main track.
  • mdracing69 · Connections of D'Funnybone have never serious considered the Derby. He does not have the route foundation. Preakness may be in the cards after the Withers. Reminds me of Munnings. 7f specialist deserves a chance to route in the future. · 2597 days ago
Dutrow is not talking Derby right now. After the Swale, he said, “He ran like I thought he would. It looked like he was pretty much in control all the way. My first choice for him next would be the Withers (Apr. 24 at Aqueduct), a one-turn mile, then see where we are.” I agree with Medlocke - let's see what he can do going two turns on dirt!
Rebounded from his flop in the BC to win like a good thing in the Hutcheson at even money. Sat off the pace as they went the half in 45.10, he's not too speed crazy, you would have to think they will stretch him out one more time. Probably not going to get 1 1/4 miles, but maybe it was the synthetic he didn't like at Santa Anita.
Starting to get wound up at Gulfstream, Hutcheson looks like a very possible spot
