  • 12thCrown · Not sure how many of you frequent Oaklawn, so while there won't be a "Cougar Day" per se, there are plenty of eligible ladies and dudes hanging around the second level sports bar. Seriously though, it's an extremely social place where people do care about the horses. · 19 days ago ·

  • 12thCrown · I think FG spacing the race as is hurts their chances for top contenders. Very few will wheel back for another race like Nehro did last year. But it's shocking they don't draw better candidates with the $1 million purse! I love visiting that track... can't believe Asmussen is heading west this winter. · 41 days ago ·

  • shadowno · The level playing field not my comment, but with regard to the surface, geography played a part given the tracks proximity to the San Gabriel mountains. Heavy rains and flooding/runoff from the mountains washed away part of the pro-ride surface in 2009-10 costing them racing days and $$$$$. Also, I don't believe it ever drained as advertised like the cushion track that cost multiple dates in 08.. It was a safer surface for horses, by reported fatilities, signifigantly so, even factoring in the lost days. But here (probably even more here given the state budget and miserable economy), as everywhere $$$$ talks and a closed track can't produce revenue. And with Awesome Gem that 1 win happened to be the Hollywood Gold Cup and he produced clutch efforts in the Pacific Classic, San Antonio and Goodwood in over synthetics so I'll give him credit for his ability to handle prety much anything thrown his way. · 64 days ago ·

  • footlick · the other problem with the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita was that they never cleared out the former surfaces completely when installing and then reinstalling the Pro-Ride, so it was never a pure surface to begin with and that added to it's instability · 64 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · And many of you need one in reality. What i said is completely true. If you want to be technical, over 90 of horses in this sport are not clean, but are because of what is made legal. Winstrol was at the time, so even it showed up in Curlin's blood, it would have been fine. I also provided you with facts above that say that that particular drug does not produce much weight gain or muscle gain, unlike typical steroids. That particular drug is actually used to treat conditions that cause swelling, and it reduces it. Swelling typically comes from when blood flows highly to one area of the body causing it to swell and become stiff and painful. If it reduces swelling then this drug would be an equivalent to aprin or motrin to humans. · 100 days ago ·

  • shadowno · Unless Stay Thirsty pops and wins the BCC this should be a no brainer for Animal Kingdom. He won the race they all wanted to win, ran a big Preakness and was injured likely during the running of the Belmont. Even with a BCC win it doesn't get any bigger than Kentucky Derby. · 121 days ago ·

  • RaTalk_Girl · shadowno, interesting thoughts. I cannot disagree that every 3 year old wants that Derby win, but is it really enough. I do think that your argument about his Preakness run could change my mind. He looked great in the Derby and I do not think the way he ran in the Preakness is second to anyone. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the season brings. · 121 days ago ·
