Cousin was big Vanderbilt's horse / Bought specifically for the course / But before in a prep / He didn't run a step / And Alfie shipped him off sans remorse!
Cousin would make 11 more starts in England, trying a flat course once and placing and then hurdling until 1955 when he would refuse a jump and have to be euthanized. Cousin would win twice, place and show under the new name, "Cousin II", failing to hit the board eight times while being trained by Gerald Balding. Final career statistics for Cousin may vary but form what I have gathered, he died as a Gelding with 27 starts, 9 wins (4 in stakes), 2 places (both in stakes) and 4 shows (none being in stakes). He brought Alfred Vanderbilt a profit, with lifetime earnings of $95,000 and 243 pounds. A truly nutty horse that will always be forgotten, but a great story.
Please read and once approved, comment the article on Cousin so I can know if another article should be written about his 3 year old campaign.

I've been reading up on the antics of this horse and its hilarious! He'd refuse to train on the main track at Saratoga and then swept by Tom Fool in the afternoon on the main track! His refusal was falling "over like he'd been shot" Appley recalled. Cousin also tried to lay down in the starting gate, he successfully threw his jockey, Guerin, before the start and in the Futurity broke "into the air" as John Eisenberg wrote. After being taken to Churchill, the horse refuses to run. Not even a bullwhip could get him to extend. Vanderbilt once even said "you mean, what is Cousin going to do with us?" After being asked by Tom Young what they were doing with the nut in the Derby Trial. An eighth place finish beaten 40 lengths had him sent to Europe where he died in a racing accident. Here's a horse for a movie, forget Secretariat and Seabiscuit!
