What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Here is the brand new Down and Derby Top 20:1 Lookin at Lucky - Bothered badly on the backstretch, the champ made a big statement in the Rebel. 2 Eskendereya - Fountain of Youth explosion was the single best performance of this crop. 3 Awesome Act - I can't decide if he reminds me most of John, Paul...Read More
  • Rossington · I agree with some of this list. I don't think there's any question that from top to bottom, Lookin At Lucky is probably the most talented 3yr.old going into the Ky. Derby. Finally putting the conventional dirt question to bed, I still think Baffert would be doing him a bigger favor racing him again at Oaklawn in the Arkansas Derby instead of back out west on synthetics in the Santa Anita Derby, considering how close the finish of the Rebel Stakes came out. One more dirt track start wouldn't hurt "Lucky" at all before shipping to Churchill Downs. Awesome Act, until he went to Aqueduct, probably wouldn't have been this high up on the list, racing primarily on turf in the UK before coming stateside. But I'd agree in saying his "romp" in the Gotham Stakes is the most impressive Derby prep I've seen yet to date. To me, trying to split Eskendereya and Rule right now is about like "splitting hairs." There's no doubt that Eskendereya's got talent, and showed it in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Rule, is a strong looking, physically impressive colt that always rates on or near the lead. He's going to be tough to beat, because he's won 4 straight on dirt, on both dry and sloppy tracks. Plus, he's never been off of the board in 7 lifetime starts on dirt, making him probably the most accomplished of the dirt prospects to date. One that's not getting much press, that I think might be an excellent ATB bet at Churchill Downs, and maybe at a price, is D'Funnybone. After a horrible last of 13 place finish in the B.C. Juvenile, he's come back pretty impressively to win 3 Stakes races on three different dirt tracks, winning the Hutchenson Stakes at Gulfstream Park, the Saratoga Special at Saratoga, and the Futurity Stakes at Belmont. I wouldn't count him out of finding the wire for a win, place, or show effort in the Ky. Derby. JMO. · 3 minutes ago
Turns out that Smart Strike colts CAN win big races on synthetics and dirt, ala LOOKIN AT LUCKY in last Saturday's G2 Rebel at Oaklawn. Guess that blows a hole in the argument that the carpet single-handedly beat Curlin in the 2008 Breeders' Cup. You might recall, Curlin also was sired by Smart Stri...Read More
What are the odds that there would be a tie at the top of any poll with 28 participating voters (unfortunately one of our voters was unable to weigh in this week)? Pretty good, it appears. Unlike other polls out there, the Paulick Derby Index shows a dead lock for first ...Read More
In his play  Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare wrote of the title character’s impending misfortune, “Beware the Ides of March.”  Perhaps such a warning could have been given by trainer John Shirreffs to trainer Steve Asmussen before Zardana was to take on Rachel Alexandra in the inaugural...Read More
While the top four stayed the same, there were some interesting developments in the Paulick Derby Index brought to you by Vinery LTD. The most obvious was Awesome Act’s giant leap to number nine in our poll. Last week, the British invader did not receive a single vote from our 29-vote panel. While A...Read More
Kentucky Derby watchers everywhere have passed the point of no return.  Inside of eight weeks, it is put up or shut up time.  Connections and horses are now in full scramble mode to prove that they have what it takes to make a serious run for the roses. Yesterday we saw impressive runs...Read More
One of the things I really like about Steve Munday's Derby Dozen (editors note: I'm a participant so this is totally biased) is the use of the Roman Numeral for his bi-weekly Volumes. Now typically only Olympiads and Super Bowls are allowed to use this status, but I think it's cool that we have some...Read More
There are so many top 3-year-olds who still have questions to answer it makes it tough to come up with a list of 12 horses each week that you’re perfectly happy with.   There are always going to be horses you’d love to include who just haven’t done quite enough to warrant supplanting the more a...Read More
Following Conveyance's game win in the Southwest Stakes (gr. All of a sudden the Derby Trail just got a whole lot downer and derbier with several important preps being run yesterday. The theme of the day was Mr. Todd Pletcher, who scored with three Derby prep wins, topped by a scintilating score by Eskendereya. All of yesterday's preps...Read More
  • wickedstyle · Enjoyed the read - I was somewhat surprised to see you put Eskendereya at #2, not that I disagree after the FOY, but it still surprised me. No Vale of York? Just a Cali fluke? And also no love for Discreetly Mine? · 26 days ago
  • cigar · Eskendereya's Fountain of Youth is by the far the best performance any 3-year-old has put on the track this year. He should be #1. · 24 days ago
Wow.... what do you say to that. Just jumped to the lead and ran them off their feet. And barely held on. Not the best bunch in the world, either. Let's just say those tactics won't take him very far in Louisville. Probably a miler more than anything.
Zabeel Racing International's Conveyance remained undefeated in four starts, as he sprinted to an early lead then held off late bids from Dublin and Cardiff Giant to win the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (gr.
