What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Connemara...

The sport of horse racing can be rewarding and disappointing. Sometimes, It just makes you shake your head. All three were on display at Golden Gate Fields over the last two weeks and it all stemmed from one race, a year ago. Lets flash back to the 2010 California Derby for a little perspective. The...Read More

Because no one else will tell you, not a single Wood Memorial alumnus has finished in the money in the Kentucky Derby since Funny Cide and Empire Maker in 2003. That's six years of blanks, 13 off-the-board finishes and an average placing of 10th. So before one more gas-blower tells you about how bad...Read More

  • cstphns20 · Four Triple Crown winners came from winning the Wood Memorial and that does not include Secretariat who finished third in the Wood. So what's the point? On May 1st the horse who runs the best race will win the Kentucky Derby. That's the way it has always been!! Just pick a horse you like, stay on his band wagon, bet on him to win and if he doesn't, try it again next year! · 661 days ago ·

Disappointed just a week earlier when their 3-1 favorite Interactif (Broken Vow) could only finish fourth in the Blue Grass S. For the first time, the winner of the Lexington will not be guaranteed a starting spot in the Kentucky Derby. Regardless, the field is full of up-and-comers including Uptowncharlybrown who is eying the winners circle as the 4-1 morning line favorite. Read More

A strong field of 12 three-year olds will compete in this Saturday's (April 17) $300,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. 2). The 1 1/16th mile race on the Polytrack will be the last chance for a few of the horses in the race to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands, which will be...Read More
After watching the Lane's End, I think Connemara has a real shot at second or better. This horse really turned on the gas in the stretch, and supposing it runs the same way in the Derby, Connemara is going to hurt alot of tickets! By the way, I hope alot of you know that those Beyer speed figures are just short-hand, and instead of relying on them, you should actually read the results for these prep races on the KD site.
Several prospects for the Coolmore Lexington Stakes had their final pre-race workouts Saturday, including Distorted Dave, a John Sadler-trained colt who figures as one of the top contenders for the Grade 2 race. The $300,000 Lexington will be run Saturday at Keeneland as the unofficial last stop bef...Read More
Updated 2010 Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes earnings as of March 31, 2010. Key contenders Eskendereya, Caracortado, Schoolyard Dreams, Drosselmeyer, Jackson Bend and Pleasant Prince will all likely require more graded stakes earnings to get in. Read More
  • bband · It seems like more horses will get shut out this year than in recent memory. What will be interesting is if Pletcher starts all 7 horses, fully knowing the lesser ones can't compete with his top runners. But what it will do is keep several real contenders out of the race. · 679 days ago ·

Right now my list shows 8 Kentucky Derby contenders who are finished prepping and awaiting the first Saturday in May with $200,000 or more in graded stakes earnings, and another 7 with a final prep to go and already who have topped $200,000. With 6 slots available between now and Derby Day worth $20...Read More
His accomplishments beforehand had been modest, but the 2 1/2-length victory for Dean's Kitten in the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes (gr. It is fair to say that the best part of the track at Turfway Saturday is the outside. Silver Time and Proud Heiress ran one-two in the Queen by staying five or more paths off the inside, and then Cool Bullet similarly dominated the Hansel with a wide trip. The most important horse on the 2010 Triple Crown trail so far is -- drumroll please -- WOW WOW WOW. He single-handedly enflames the La De...Read More

Dale Romans has been looking forward to returning to his Kentucky roots. The 43-year-old trainer spent most of this past winter in south Florida, as usual, but like many racetrack lifers, he invokes a familiar refrain as the next move beckons: "Can't wait to get there, love being there, can't wait t...Read More
Performance of the week was turned in by D'Funnybone, but he is not being considered for the Kentucky Derby. Here is the brand new Down and Derby Top 20:1 Lookin at Lucky - Bothered badly on the backstretch, the champ made a big statement in the Rebel. 2 Eskendereya - Fountain of Youth explosion was the single best performance of this crop. 3 Awesome Act - I can't decide if he reminds me most of John, Paul...Read More
  • Rossington · I agree with some of this list. I don't think there's any question that from top to bottom, Lookin At Lucky is probably the most talented 3yr.old going into the Ky. Derby. Finally putting the conventional dirt question to bed, I still think Baffert would be doing him a bigger favor racing him again at Oaklawn in the Arkansas Derby instead of back out west on synthetics in the Santa Anita Derby, considering how close the finish of the Rebel Stakes came out. One more dirt track start wouldn't hurt "Lucky" at all before shipping to Churchill Downs. Awesome Act, until he went to Aqueduct, probably wouldn't have been this high up on the list, racing primarily on turf in the UK before coming stateside. But I'd agree in saying his "romp" in the Gotham Stakes is the most impressive Derby prep I've seen yet to date. To me, trying to split Eskendereya and Rule right now is about like "splitting hairs." There's no doubt that Eskendereya's got talent, and showed it in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Rule, is a strong looking, physically impressive colt that always rates on or near the lead. He's going to be tough to beat, because he's won 4 straight on dirt, on both dry and sloppy tracks. Plus, he's never been off of the board in 7 lifetime starts on dirt, making him probably the most accomplished of the dirt prospects to date. One that's not getting much press, that I think might be an excellent ATB bet at Churchill Downs, and maybe at a price, is D'Funnybone. After a horrible last of 13 place finish in the B.C. Juvenile, he's come back pretty impressively to win 3 Stakes races on three different dirt tracks, winning the Hutchenson Stakes at Gulfstream Park, the Saratoga Special at Saratoga, and the Futurity Stakes at Belmont. I wouldn't count him out of finding the wire for a win, place, or show effort in the Ky. Derby. JMO. · 691 days ago ·

Turns out that Smart Strike colts CAN win big races on synthetics and dirt, ala LOOKIN AT LUCKY in last Saturday's G2 Rebel at Oaklawn. Guess that blows a hole in the argument that the carpet single-handedly beat Curlin in the 2008 Breeders' Cup. You might recall, Curlin also was sired by Smart Stri...Read More
