Older Comments about Connemara...

After watching the Lane's End, I think Connemara has a real shot at second or better. This horse really turned on the gas in the stretch, and supposing it runs the same way in the Derby, Connemara is going to hurt alot of tickets! By the way, I hope alot of you know that those Beyer speed figures are just short-hand, and instead of relying on them, you should actually read the results for these prep races on the KD site.
OK, now I know why there's not more hype on this horse. He's undefeated, but has never run better than a 77 Beyer. In a field of 6 on Saturday, four of his competitors have run better beyers than he has. Still could improve, but has a ways to go.
  • cigar · The other thing is the field is really weak on Saturday, so he can win and some hype will pick-up even though he's beating nothings. · 2602 days ago
I think this colt is one to watch
  • arazi · Interesting that Pletcher said he was impressed with his first start but no so much the second. Also interesting that they go up North. That could be a sign of weakness. Hard to say. · 2603 days ago
Pletcher is pretty high on Connemara. Here's what he said and he explained why he's shipping to Golden Gate: "I thought his first race was pretty impressive," he said. "He broke very, very poorly that day and he has very little gate speed. It really looked to me like he was in a position early in the race where it was impossible for him to win from, and he actually came on to win very impressively. His second start we felt was a workman-like effort, maybe not quite as good as his first start. We've kind of freshened him up a bit since then and we feel like he's doing well and ready to run an improved race. Even though he's training at Santa Anita and we had the option of the San Rafael, we just felt like the little bit of added ground would be in his favor at Golden Gate.
Will be interested to see what this one can do this weekend. It's about time to kick off the Derby trail in some sort of fashion with the Cal Derby and San Rafael this weekend...
Connemara, a 1/2 to Lion Heart, debuted at Turfway Park on Oct 4th (10th race). Lots of buzz on the Pletcher trainee after a last to first maiden tally by five lengths.
