What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Careless Jewel is the definition of lone speed for the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, the headline event on day one of the two-day 2009 Breeders' Cup from Santa Anita. Primary rivals include Music Note, Life Is Sweet and Cocoa Beach.Read More
There’s on old adage that says the more things change, the more they stay same. Keep that in mind when you handicap the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1). The dynamic three-year-old filly whose name is on the tip of everyone’s tongue may be skipping this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup. Yet in the year’s r...Read More
The 26th Breeders’ Cup will be run at Santa Anita this weekend and Dubai International Racing Carnival and World Cup graduates are plentiful at the entry box. Longshot winner of the 2009 Dubai Duty Free (G1), Gladiatorus will once again hold longshot status in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1)....Read More
Cocoa Beach and Music Note have been here before. In 2008, at the end of long campaigns, they were still able to finish second and third, respectively, to Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita.Read More
  • Rossington · Music Note and Cocoa Beach will be a dangerous duo only if Zenyatta goes to the Classic. Otherwise, I'd say Music Note has a chance to show in the race. If Zenyatta defects from the Ladies Classic, I see the Ladies Classic ending as 1st-Careless Jewel 2nd-Music Note 3rd-Life is Sweet. That would be my Ladies Classic tri-fecta minus Zenyatta. · 135 days ago
Rachel Alexandra isn't coming and Zenyatta is leaning to the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). However, anyone who believes that doesn't leave much for the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) needs to think again.Read More
  • Rossington · Unless she just totally collapses, with Zenyatta likely out of the Ladies Classic, Careless Jewel should, if she runs to form, win the Ladies Classic. Most expect Music Note to run well, but Cocoa Beach, Lethal Heat or Rainbow View seem to be the talk of who's likely to complete the tri-fecta. I think Life is Sweet hit's the board in this race. Managing to finish 3rd to the boys in the Hollywood Gold Cup, she can certainly get up to place or show in the Ladies Classic imo. · 137 days ago
On Wednesday, trainer Aidan O'Brien and Simon Crisford, Racing Manager for the Maktoum family's Godolphin operation, revealed their plans for the Breeders' Cup at a press event held at Epsom Downs racecourse in England.Read More
  • Rossington · Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await. · 140 days ago

This year's Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) is shaping up to be a repeat of 2008, with most of the same cast and crew re-opposing reigning champion ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]). One really interesting contender has been retired, and another major player is now only 50-50 for the 1 1/8-mile event.Read More
IEAH Stables President Mike Iavarone woke up Monday morning with a flu bug, but nothing could bring him down following the tremendous performance of his horses this past weekend. • dustino140 · It's a shame Zenyatta is campaigned by the people who have her right now. This is a mare that has deserved much better handling than she's received, and her legacy is going to suffer tenfold because of it. In decades, I think people will remember Rachel Alexandra - and it's amazing to consider that she's possibly not even the best female in racing right now. They've just never campaigned Zenyatta with any boldness (i.e. why wasn't she in the Goodwood instead of the Lady's Secret?), and her legacy is going to suffer because of that. A shame. · 158 days ago
  • Medlocke · The front page says it all, "Zenyatta does it again!" Simple but effective. Remember that phrase, because she'll keep on doing it again and again as long as this big mare continues to race. She owns whatever racetrack she's on. I've been watching horse racing for a long time, and I don't think I've ever seen a horse lag at the back of a pack like she often does and then just gobble up so much ground in the stretch. She makes winning look easy. '' · 157 days ago
America’s top older mare, Zenyatta, holds a perfect record 12-for-12 mark and takes it into Saturday’s Lady’s Secret Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita against former Dubai International Racing Carnival winner Cocoa Beach...  Read More
On Saturday, Zenyatta looks to extend her streak in the Lady's Secret, a race she won last year by more than three lengths. Despite her resume, they've lined-up against her, including Anabaa's Creation, whom Zenyatta almost lost to in August.Read More
The major preps for the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on Saturday will be a little trickier for the locals, thanks to a few prominent shippers from the East Coast. Gayego, a stakes winner in California in 2008 and an acquisition of Godolphin Racing's last fall, is a candidate for Sunday's $300,000 An...Read More

Originally pointed to a fall campaign at Belmont Park, Godolphin's Cocoa Beach came out of a stakes win at Saratoga earlier this month so well that her connections have opted to run her Aug. 29 in the $200,000 Ballston Spa Handicap (gr. IIT). Read More

For her personality as much as her pedigree, Miss Isella has long been a favorite of trainer Ian Wilkes.  Watching her develop into a rising distaff star has made him an even bigger fan. “It was a case of you always liked her, because she always tried hard,” Wilkes said. “As good as she is, you...Read More
