Q of the D : who was the most spectacular horse you were alive to see achieve what they did? (you didn't have to see them in person)
Happy Birthday Cigar. Yes it's his actual birthday
I'm looking for a video montage of Cigar's races that was televised around '96. It was during one of the few nationally televised horse racing events, possibly Breeder's Cup? The video was done to the Dave Clark Five song, Catch Us If You Can. The song perfectly fit the clips of Cigar and Bailey passing the field, leaving them all in their dust. Would love to see it again.

  • travel_vic · PROPERLY managed it is nice to say, RARE, but nice to say in this case · 256 days ago
  • travel_vic · This animal did NOT just depend upon one single effort each year to establish class. as he did it all year long against some of the better stock · 256 days ago
Got to see him at Kentucky Horse Park. He's really big and pretty, the person presenting him said that he likes to make people laugh.

  • Sullivan · Interesting... genetics may be the new biggest science if it is not already. I do have to worry, though. Somewhere down the line, all of this tradition, one of the oldest parts of horse racing, breeding, will be useless. :( · 379 days ago
  • goblin · Genetics, part of biology, through new capabilities in molecular applications is very exciting, but some things will never change. There is no way to control or predict certain aspects of meiosis, such as how chromosomes will cross-over and recombine. · 379 days ago
Where do you rank him, generalization, amongst the best of all time (Top 3, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, Top 50, Top 75, Top 100, etc, GENERALLY not specific unless he is near the top :P)
who do you think were the top horses in the 1990's?

  • On The Gallop's · I just want to touch on Lammtarra once more. This Colt wins the Epsom Derby in record time, The KG/QEII after giving up the lead coming to the wire only to battle back to win, and then goes to the Arc and beats some quality horses to win the Arc and leaving Swain 3 lengths behind him. I wish I could visit him at Dalham Hall Stud but don't have the time to go down. This is an extremely light raced horse, but his brilliance was to valuable to the Maktoum family to continue racing him. Phenominal 3 year old, and only recently did we see a 3 year old exceed what he did, and that is Sea The Stars. · 414 days ago
  • Sullivan · He was the first Arabian Epsom Derby winner · 414 days ago
I am confused to how Cigar is rated so low on all-time list here......I am a Holy Bull fan but Cigar deserves a much higher rating.......what is up with this???

  • travel_vic · Ratings set up by tryos are nowhere close to accurate · 516 days ago
  • Buckpasser · No one can take these ratings seriously. They are jus a popularity contest. One I saw people on this site giving Secretariat a 3 and rating horses a 10 who couldn't even walk him to the starting gate let alone run in the same race, I don't even look at them anymore. · 516 days ago
Has anyone ever have met him? :) For starters, he looks great and healthy and energetic at age 22. Second, I always remember is personality. He always wanted to run, he would often tug at Bailey, but he had the cool to tell him no. I remember Durkin calling in the backstretch: " And CIGAR, wants to go! But, Jerry Bailey says no, NOT YET!" I met him a while a go, about three years ago. Me and my son (Who was seven or eight at the time) Watched him graze for an hour, he even ate grass out of my hand! Anyway, I loved his personality, he knows he was great, he knows the attention he gets, he loves it, it is quite funny.

  • Mary Z. · Okay, I think I unblocked the timeline. I don't care about stalkers this week(maybe day). I guess they just want to wear my skin. I'll put the lotion on, lol. · 602 days ago
  • kay.robinett · Got to see him last fall (2011) at the Kentucky Horse Park. He carries himself magnificently when brought out into the little pavilion for visitors. You would never know he's starting to get up there in years! They must give him wonderful care there. · 602 days ago
Cigar or A.P. Indy, which horse was better on the track?
Got to pet him at the Kentucky Horse Park last week. What a kind horse! Smart too, he knows he's great.
He is one of the best of all time with his 16 race win streak and traveling half the globe and all over the U.S., definitely the best horse of 1990's.

One of the great winning streaks in horse racing. Even went half way around the world and won!
  • railbird33 · What a warrior, Jerry Bailey had no idea what was ahead when he was put on this horse. · 756 days ago
  • travel_vic · recall his compalining when he took the Siphon bait at Del Mar and them blamed everyone else for his loss....Not like you Jerry · 756 days ago
whoever keeps giving Cigar 3's every week is very disrespectful to this great champion.
I just went to see Cigar when I went to the Rolex last weekend. He's my favorite living horse... and he's still feisty! We got to watch him romp around his paddock. :)
Happy Birthday Cigar! He's 22.
Poor Cigar - some awful person keeps voting him down. What has the poor old chap done to deserve such treatment?

  • cocoa2 · I think he is awful forgotten, this one was a flashback form the 70s. · 819 days ago
He was definately one of a kind, won many of his races refusing to be 2nd to any horse
Why is he not in the top 20? Is liking Cigar not fashionable these days?

  • icyhotboo · @Mary Z. I don't know about the loud yell but back then there was no love lost between jockeys on the track. They consistantly did that to Dr. Fager as he couldn't be rated, especially when he faced Buckpasser and Damascus who on that day was awsome. · 903 days ago
