2012 ... A Loaded Year
This year, 2012, seems to be setting up as one of the deepest and most contentious in years, with stars piling high in almost every division.

Nice ... I'll add Mr. Commons, Wise Dan, Ever So Lucky, and Agave Kiss to your list of 2012 horses to watch.

Lol Brian. I would have added more if I could have. I was getting a little wordy, lol. But yes Mr. Commons is one for the turf, Wise Dan loves CD, I'm looking forward to Ever So Lucky. His last was very impressive to me :)

Good list. Personally, most looking forward to Sway Away, Royal Delta and Creative Cause. Much love for beautiful HDG too. Best wishes to you in pursuing your education goals, DH.

One of the benefits of the economy is that horses are not being retired to stud, so 2012 could be a great year in the Older Horse division!

Thank you very much Mary. I love that so many 3yr olds are coming back this year. Makes for an interesting year.

Excited to see To Honor and Serve, Grace Hall, Creative Cause, Hansen, It's Tricky and Awesome Feather run next year. I have a feeling all these horses will do well. Also like Mr. Commons and Wise Dan.

Whoo whee! I am so excited about this year. Two more on my watch list are the undefeated Now I Know and the Smarty Jones baby Isn't He Clever. I foresee a lot of "DelCaps" this year! Great preview DeadHeat. I look forward to debating with you more in the coming year.

2012 looks good on paper, but after 3 years of poor older male and average at best 3 year old male crops it makes you wonder if this is just a down cycle or if something is wrong with the way horses are breed and/or trained today. If next year we are ta

Sorry wrong button again, if next year at this time we are picking an Eclipse award for top older horse and top 3 year old with only 1 or 2 Grade I wins then something is wrong.

Part of me agrees with you Mike in SB, but part of me doesn't. Unless one of the handicap older males matures, I think we may see another year of them trading blows. It will be a good division, but only the upcoming year can determine whether or not it will be a great division.

Ditto for Mr. Commons, & not to forget about Zazu, and Winter Memories, and no doubt a couple others eluding mention.

Not to forget Flat Out, hopefully the 10 year old Musketier, the wonderful Turallure, Inglorious (who else, there's always one more) And very sorry to see the great Gio Ponti and Tizway retiring.

Wow talk about me wanting to get ready for a new year of racing! That got the juices flowing. Even seeing Reveron win the GP Derby today made me ralize that the KY Derby is only 4 months away and the the 2yo picture is very promising right now. FYI, the Horse of the Year award next year will come down to Awesome feather, HDG, and Royal Delta. Females will dominate the sport more than ever this year.

Ann, after 1200 words many seem to lose interest. If I could have mentioned everyone I would have, as I noted earlier. I have also yet to have heard a lot about Winter Memories or Zazu. If they return it will make things even hotter.

If not restricted to U.S. horses, then I'd add Frankel and Black Caviar, too, as horses to look forward to this year.

Mary, I was thinking about US horses when I wrote this, but yes, I am looking forward to watching some of those overseas. Frankle is probably the most anticipated horse in the world.

It is very promising to see all of these nice horses return in 2012 and not be rushed off to the breeding shed.

The only thing with Boys is that they are being a little too tentative with him. Trick, they obviously knew was the same horse, and with how they are being with Boys compared to Trick, i fear that they think that Boys is not the same horse he was at two.

The pace was slow and that affected the final time overall, affecting the Beyer. The race was very impressive despite the 72.

Bella of the Ball
The greys are coming out in a force this 2011, and just before the year was about to turn over another silver grey lass put herself on the watch list. Ciao Bella debuted this past Sunday, the 18th, in spectacular fashion.

Looks good. Time didn't matter a lot here as the race was at hand. Visually she looked great. See how she does against winners, but looks to be a big time horse.

Giant's Causeway is turning into quite the sire. Does not suprise me that Ciao Bella did so well in her debut. Looking forward to her future races.

This is they type of debut I like a lot, and an added bonus was the mile distance. I love that she closed and rated. I love how well she closed, love how easy she did it, and how she ran on. It wasn't a Christine Daae or Discreet Dancer, where it was impressive, but you saw the horse was being ridden at the end a little, they went w2w, but were slowing down some. This had everything you could want.

She's definitely going to go the distance. Just imagine if she had had a pace to run at.

I think if she had a pace to run at you may have seen her mid pack, instead of closing, but I think that kick would have been just the same.

Couldn't agree more, she was ultra professional. Most of Pletcher's debut winners are keyed-up front runners, but was really impressed with the way she rated and kicked home. Also, it was at a mile & you rarely see debut winners at a longer distance like that.

Ciao Bella
looked good in her flat mile debut at the Gulf for Pletcher on Dec 18. The 2yo daughter of Giant's Causeway is out of multiple graded winning mare Bella Bellucci.

She looked good closing and weaving through traffic on a track not always kind to speed. Also note that her chart says she was behind by 3.5 lengths and won by over 7, meaning she made up nearly 10 lengths. Again, not bad at all considering the pace, how the track typically plays, and the traffic she had to get through.
