Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta lead the list of 45 fillies and mares that have been nominated to the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park on April 9. If the two champions run in the mile and a eighth race, the purse will be worth $5 million. The field will be limited to 10 horses if bot...Read More

Because of the length of each diary, the number of parts have been increased. Tentatively, Part 3 will cover March 10 thru March 22; Part 4 will encompass my trip to Dubai (March 23 to 29) and comments from people over there; and the final part will be covering the race live.Read More
Careless Jewel, among the dominant members of last year's crop of 3-year-old fillies despite a disappointing performance in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in her season finale, is getting closer to her return. This is the first of a three-part diary on the $5-million Apple Blossom Invitational (gr. I) April 9, pitting Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta in a long-awaited battle for the ages. Exactly six weeks from today the "Race for the Ages" is supposed to take place at Oaklawn Park. Whether or not Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta meet in the Apple Blossom remains to be seen, but we have reasons to be hopeful. If you are wondering why there has been little promotion for th...Read More
Suspend reality for a moment and imagine that Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are both ready to run in the newly-minted $5 million G1 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn on April 3. Yes, I believe it’s highly-unlikely that Rachel—who has posted only one official workout since her Woodward victory on...Read More
As the 2009 Saratoga meet neared its climax there was one question on everyone’s mind: When is Rachel running here?  The Alabama was considered a possibility but once it became clear that she was not headed here a new lady was the biggest story. Read More

  • Rossington · I love Careless Jewel. I lost money on her in the Ladies Classic. I even went across the board on her, because I thought "no way she finishes out of the money." But what I found out watching her in that race is that she has what I call the "Pressious Passion Syndrome." Just like P.P., if the right Careless Jewel show's up, she'll take it wire to wire. If the wrong one show's up, forget it. Also, IMO, I'll still take Zenyatta to beat Rachel or Careless Jewel on any surface at any distance. · 87 days ago
A few days prior to the Breeders' Cup, I started to write something about how horses with prep races run on dirt had failed so abysmally over Pro-Ride at Santa Anita the year before. I was going to list all of the 2009 dirt-to-Pro-Ride horses, label them throwouts and advise the public that they wou...Read More
Careless Jewel is the definition of lone speed for the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, the headline event on day one of the two-day 2009 Breeders' Cup from Santa Anita. Primary rivals include Music Note, Life Is Sweet and Cocoa Beach.Read More
There’s on old adage that says the more things change, the more they stay same. Keep that in mind when you handicap the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1). The dynamic three-year-old filly whose name is on the tip of everyone’s tongue may be skipping this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup. Yet in the year’s r...Read More
With Zenyatta's (Street Cry [Ire]) connections opting to send their champion for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), the Ladies' Classic one day prior could prove to be a contentious affair. There are a number of distaffers in with a chance, but the following three are my top choices for the 1 1/8-mile ...Read More
  • Medlocke · I agree with the author's comment's on Music Note and Careless Jewel, but frankly I think Lethal Heat is a bit overrated. She's not nearly as accomplished this year as Music Note and Careless Jewel have been. I like Careless Jewel's speed to hold up and win the Ladies Classic, but not without a challenge from Music Note. I like Zenyatta's stablemate to get up in the money as well, Life is Sweet has ran very well over the surface and at Santa Anita. She's never been worse than 4th in her whole career, and has very rarely finished out of the money, even getting up for 3rd against the boy's in the Hollywood Gold Cup. At morning line odd's of 8-1, that make's her a "sweet" bet to hit the board in the Ladies Classic. · 134 days ago
Careless Jewel has taken Vern and Donna Dubinsky to winner's circles they never thought possible, especially for a horse who cost only $40,000.Read More
  • Medlocke · With Zenyatta now having moved on to greener pasture's, Careless Jewel, imo, is the filly to beat in the Ladies Classic. I think her front running speed hold's up on an already fast track. Music Note will likely let herself get caught up in a speed duel with Careless Jewel on the front end. With that in mind, and fast fraction's likely to be set, Life is Sweet closes late on a tiring Music Note to get 2nd leaving Music Note coming home 3rd. jmo. · 135 days ago
  • Lmaris · I think she would still the one to beat. I don't think Music Note can run with Careless Jewel who has a far higher cruising speed than the other fillies. Life is Sweet will be where she's been for her other races this year - up the track. · 134 days ago
Rachel Alexandra isn't coming and Zenyatta is leaning to the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). However, anyone who believes that doesn't leave much for the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) needs to think again.Read More
  • Rossington · Unless she just totally collapses, with Zenyatta likely out of the Ladies Classic, Careless Jewel should, if she runs to form, win the Ladies Classic. Most expect Music Note to run well, but Cocoa Beach, Lethal Heat or Rainbow View seem to be the talk of who's likely to complete the tri-fecta. I think Life is Sweet hit's the board in this race. Managing to finish 3rd to the boys in the Hollywood Gold Cup, she can certainly get up to place or show in the Ladies Classic imo. · 138 days ago
This is a filly I'm really looking forward to seeing on Breeders Cup day. If Zenyatta moves on to the Classic, and it look's as though she will, Careless Jewel become's the star of the show in the Ladies Classic. It's kind of a double edge sword though. As much as I want to see Zenyatta go on to the Classic and face males, I'd almost just as equally enjoy seeing her in this race against Careless Jewel. This filly is a true speed demon, and all heart to go along with it. She' s looked really impressive in her last 3 races, completely dominating the fields. It is, however, mis fortunate that Icon Project is out of the Ladies Classic. She was another that was just starting to put it all together at the right time. But without Zenyatta and Icon Project to test her, her biggest threat in the race, imo, lye's in Music Note trying to run with her at or near the front. And with Life Is Sweet with her late charging rallies that she likely learned from her stablemate. But all and all, I think Careless Jewel prove to be to difficult a foe and win's the 2009 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic.
An absolutely impressive 3yr.old filly that impresses me as much as any horse in racing to date. Nothing but sheer blazing speed on the front end with enough stamina to stay the course of the race and usually draw away big to win her races. With the Breeders Cup likely to be Zenyatta's swan song no matter which race she competes in, I anxiously look forward to Careless Jewel's 4yr.old season next year, where if we're lucky, we might see her somehow, somewhere wind up entered in a race with another good 4yr.old filly, R.A. With both of their front running speed, that would be a super race to see. Say what you will, Careless Jewel has enough speed to give Rachael Alexandra all she'll want and more.

  • rossington · After seeing her performance at Philadelphia Park today, and her 2 other recent romps in the Alabama Stakes and the Delaware Oaks, Carless Jewel is a filly that has really come into her own. She may be the one to beat in the Ladies Classic if Zenyatta runs against the boys, and maybe even if she doesn't. Carless Jewel and Icon Project are 2 fillies that I think either could more than hold their own with Rachael Alexandra or Zenyatta. · 166 days ago
  • Rossington · With Rachael Alexandra on the sidelines for the rest of the year, and the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic or Ladies Classic likely to be Zenyatta's swan song, I anxiously await the 2010 racing season. I think it possible that next year we may get to see a race somehow, somewhere that both Rachael Alexandra and Careless Jewel may both be entered in. What a speed duel that would be. I think it's possible because R.A. isn't likely to run every race she run's next year against colts. That said, they're likely to hook up somewhere down the road. That's a race I won't want to miss. · 141 days ago
