What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Cal Nation...

WinStar Farm LLC’s Cal Nation broke slowly, came with a three-wide run and ran down Glickman in the final strides to post a neck victory in the $44,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Monmouth Park on Sunday.Read More
Trainer Mike Maker and jockey Victor Lebron visited the winner's circle for a fourth time on Saturday's Kentucky Cup card at Turfway Park after F. Thomas Conway and Matt Conway's MATTHEWSBURG (Ghostzapper) proved a decisive winner of the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3) for three-year-olds going si...Read More
Klaravich Stables & WH Lawrence’s Zero Rate Policy rode a three-race winning streak into last month’s Jersey Shore (G3).   Not much went right that day as the 3-year-old son of Trippi finished last of four, beaten 8 ½ lengths.   But in Saturday’s Select Stakes, trainer Terri Pompay bel...Read More
Locally-based Indiano, last year's champion 2-year-old in Panama, earned his first graded stakes victory in the United States with a decisive win in the Grade 2, $200,000 Carry Back July 9 at Calder Casino & Race Course. The 3-year-old son of Indian Charlie sat a stalking third for a half-mile b...Read More
SASSY IMAGE (Broken Vow), like numerous professional sports teams, is a world-beater at home but highly vulnerable when she hits the road. However, a road win Saturday in the $350,000 Princess Rooney H. (G1) at Calder would greatly enhance her prospects for an Eclipse Award as champion female sprint...Read More
Sunday’s $150,000 Jersey Shore Stakes (G3) will bring out some very talented 3-year-old sprinters who might again threaten the track record for six furlongs.   Each renewal of the race brings the chance of very fast times, a tradition started when sprint champion Smoke Glacken won the 1997 rene...Read More

  • KyOaksRunner · I've never been a big fan of Cal Nation but I remember a friend of mine saying they needed to cut him back in distance. Looks like a solid runner. · 363 days ago ·

  • xMystix · From a quick glance at his pedigree, he seems more like a speed/ sprinter type of horse. Then again, I'm not claiming to be a pedigree expert here, either. It just appears that he would relish the shorter distances. A mile or more would probably be pushing it. · 363 days ago ·

With patrons ready to say adios to a rather tumultuous season, it was fitting to have an impressive son of Indian Charlie, named Adios Charlie, have the last laugh this afternoon at the Big A. Guided by a crafty ride from Rajiv Maragh, Adios Charlie won the closing day feature at Aqueduct going away...Read More
  • bband · Great race by Adios Charlie. Still, not a bad race by Astrology in the slop. If it were me, in this wide open Derby field, to have a quality horse by AP Indy... I would run him in a heartbeat. · 398 days ago ·

The days of top contenders running two weeks before the Kentucky Derby, or less than that in the not too distant past, seem to be long gone. Accordingly, Saturday’s two major stakes races for three-year-olds promise little to no impact on this year’s run for the roses. While the Lexington Stakes at ...Read More

  • zatt · You are correct, Bernardini was the only Preakness winner as a fresher horse in the last 10 years, but Red Bullet did it 11 years ago, and many others have run well as new and fresh shooters in the Preakness. · 400 days ago ·

A deep field of promising 3-year-olds will come to the crossroads on Saturday when they compete in the 141st edition of the Grade 2, $150,000 Jerome, the featured race on closing day at Aqueduct Racetrack.   The Jerome, contested at Belmont Park from 1968-2009, returns to Aqueduct and to The Ne...Read More
Fresh Start Stable’s J J’s Lucky Train, who made an inexorable rally to take the Grade 3 Bay Shore at Aqueduct on April 9, could return to the Big A on April 23 to compete in the Grade 2 Jerome for 3-year-olds, trainer Bill Anderson revealed.   While the seven-furlong Bay Shore and the one-mil...Read More

  • ArturoLaguna · Thead"or- I hope for the sake of the horse and the connections that my ruminations are proven incorrect. As a former international corporate banker, I just don't see Mr. Repole the successful entrepreneur that we know would even countenance gelding a 2 yr old champion. Even if UM doesn't run in or win the KD, he will still be on much demand as a commercial sire in view of his precociousness. · 410 days ago ·

  • Thead'or · If Uncle Mo isn't a longer distance horse as we hoped, he would do the racing world a severe justice in gelding this horse. We need sturdier horses, and IF, and I say IF, Uncle Mo isn't that. Why take him to the breeding shed? Hes a very wealthy man, he doesn't need the money. Uncle Mo could be an icon of the racing world. · 410 days ago ·

  • ScottDick · I've heard rumors he might ship to NY to run in the Wood. But that will be against UNCLE MO. We'll see he definitely has a belmont running style. He reminds me a bit of Summer Bird. · 431 days ago ·

  • brent.austin.neikirk · I think The Factor is a brilliant runner with enough stamina in his pedigree to stretch that great speed he has to the 10f Derby distance. Now, as far as his running style goes, I agree with Zipse in that I like a horse that can rate for the Derby and even more I like fast closers with an awesome, strong late kick like Afleet Alex and Street Sense. Though, I'm not dismissing The Factor by any means. I will use him as long as he has a good 9f run in the Arkansas Derby. Obviously, Uncle Mo is the one to beat and I think he will have no problem with the 10f Derby distance, though some would disagree. He has showed that he can rate and I think he's getting enough stamina from his BMS, Arch, to excel at the longer distances. One horse that I like a lot right now is PrePeg. I was at Churchill when his daddy won it in '00. The San Felipe was very impressive and he has a great pedigree and gets plenty of stamina from the bottom half with horses like Summer Squall, his BMS, and The Axe. And having the great Secretariat in the X-passing position is a key part in passing the LH gene. PrePeg also has many great Reine-de-course mares like Blackball, Weekend Surprise, Source Sucree, Lavendula and more. I'm anxious to see how well he does in the SA Derby. I think this guy is starting to peak! · 422 days ago ·

  • ajump08 · J P's Gusto should not be forgotten in the Rebel. Many will look at the likes of Astrology, Sway Away, Elite Alex, Alternation, and Archarcharch; and throw this one out saying he's simply not a two turn horse. J P is very versitile, and arguably could have been the best of the Southwest with his troubled trip. He's obviously thriving in Arkansas with his bullet work today in 59.40. · 439 days ago ·
