Bradley stipulated that La Troienne live out her days after she could no longer breed and sent aside funds in his will for her care. If Bradley had not done this, many modern champions both European and American would never have been born. His treatment of La Troienne was a far cry from Marcel Broussac who owed much of his broodmare success to Frizette and her daughters. When she was no longer productive, he sent Frizette to the slaughterhouse. · 75 days ago ·

With the Busanda Stakes soon to be held, I wanted to reacquaint racing fans with this nice race mare and top broodmare. Busanda, whose name is a abbreviation of the naval office Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, was a daughter of War Admiral out of Businesslike by Blue Larkspur. She was a granddaughter of the great La Troienne. Owned by Ogden Phipps and trained by the legendary Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, she raced against the great Vanderbilt fillies Bed O' Roses and Next Move. While her best performance at two was a third in the Selima To Bed O Roses, she would win the Alabama at three and have her best year at four. She accounted for the New Castle Handicap, the Suburban, Top Flight, Saratoga Handicap. She would turn the tables on Next Move and Bed O Roses at four and would also defeat the nice handicapper County Delight and One Hitter. In a day when horses raced far more than they do today, she made 65 starts winning 10. She was retired and was the dam of Futurity winner Bupers. Her best foal was of course Buckpasser. But she was also the dam of a nice handicapper Bureaucracy who won stakes on both the flat and over hurdles. Through her daughter finance she factors in the dam line of Bernstein and the nice filly Outstandingly. Through another daughter Navsup she factors in the dam line of Polish Navy. When someone says nice race mares don't make good broodmares, Busanda would refute that statement.
