  • kay.robinett · Yes, I would like to go but live near Ann Arbor. Thought I would pass it on though for anyone who lives in the Lexington area. Might be a great chance to get some good rarish titles for a personal horse library. · 309 days ago
  • Buckpasser · I looked at what they are offering and some I would love to get. · 309 days ago
buck! I just bought The Great Ones! Finally found it and won it at a very decent price! Yay! Can't wait. I've been wanting this book since you first mentioned it long ago.
  • buckpasser · I hope you enjoy it. It was a limited edition book which chronicles the Hall of Fame horses up to the induction of Buckpasser. It has a lot of information on many early horses with nice pictures. Enjoy! · 325 days ago
  • Ruffianlover · Nice! I'll have to get that too · 324 days ago

  • Buckpasser · Thanks SS. The Malibu Stakes was obviously at the end of his championship 3 yr old season. He then won the San Fernando Stakes but was sidelined for several months until the Metropolitan because of another quarter crack. Neloy was looking towards the Strub and possibly the Big Cap for Buckpasser. · 361 days ago
  • Jay S. · Very nice, SS. · 361 days ago
Spring Adieu sired by Buckpasser She sold for $260,000 and only won $13,757 in her career. She was not a great Broodmare either, but did produce a fine broodmare Razyana who was the dam of the great sire Danehill.
  • Buckpasser · Should be noted that Spring Adieu's dam was none other than Natalma the dam of Northern Dancer. · 364 days ago
Buck,i do not know if you will be tuned into Belmont Park racing on Sunday. If by chance you are, please look at the 2nd race. The Phipps are debuting a 2yr. old colt named " Survival". I was told to keep an eye on him,not because he has been burning up the track. But by the easiness he moves. The breeding is ( Giants Causeway/Matlacha Pass ) I am sure you are aware. She just happens to be the dam of (Point of Entry, Streaker and Pine Island to name a few) They tell me that he looks like a Dirt horse, unlike his famous half brother.Similar to the comments they told me about Honor Code prior to his race.HC was a half to the very highly Chad Brown turfer Noble Tune who placed in last years jeuvenile turf for colts.Fact Shug is debuting at a mile, lends credence to the fact they are in here with the intent to win. With a potential star like this,i do not think you want to be chasing the Maiden ranks to long. You want to jump to the next level immediately.Javier Castellano is a major asset. He rides some for the Phipps, but not many. For them to secure his services. They must have a good feeling.I kidded my friends that they should not go on the limb as they say with a breed like this.I am very urious to see him run.Average morning works have him at 6-1 ML odds. There are some high profile horses and connections in the race. I know what direction i will be staring at.
where have you been buck,i miss talking about the old power horses.yesterday at monmouth i met an old friend who used to work for the phippses.we had a good time chatting up his horses.unfortunately my experience and names went back further than his.on my list of top all time trainers ,was the gran senor himself. Angel Penna Sr.. i go back to time for a change, relaxing, waya and dance number.who else am i missing.either while training for the phippses or before. also did you have a favorite.mine was relaxing.
Buck, i was looking at the career statistics of Kelso,Dr. Fager, Buckpasser and of course Secreteriat. In no way am i trying to compare any of them to modern time superstars as themselves.A common denominator i noticed about the 4 of them ,that cannot be said about many of the modern stars. They were not only incredible race horses on the dirt, but on the turf as well. This is a true sign of not only the versatility they possesed, but a tribute to their greatness.all won top stakes on both surfaces.

Bp you were absolutely correct. I love the Sire Lines by Hewitt! I'm glad I purchased it. My next purchase will most likely be the Royal Blood Fifty years of Classic Thoroughbreds. Thank you! Keep the suggestions coming
  • Buckpasser · Glad you liked it. It's a great book on some top sires. Royal Blood is very nice book too. Enjoy. · 563 days ago
  • Buckpasser · SS. Horace Wade's Tales of the Turf is a nice book. Wade used to write a column for Blood horse and Thoroughbred Record about great horses of the past. Several copies are on Amazon. Possibly ebay. · 563 days ago
Hey Bp what can you tell me about this book- SIRE LINES by Abram S. Hewitt

  • buckpasser · Reeves book is a beautiful book ( as all of them are) with lots of pictures. There are chapters on many horses Buckpasser, Alysheba, Swaps etc. etc. HTR in mentioned in the chapter on Searching who was purchased by Hirsch Jacobs from Ogden Phipps. It's a great book. · 580 days ago
  • travel_vic · I have always seen reproductions of Reeves work. Up in our turf club many people have donated the real canvases · 579 days ago
Does anyone have any good book recommendations (or portions of books) that cover the racing/stud career and life of Buckpasser?

  • kay.robinett · sounds like this great horse is overdue for a biography · 580 days ago
  • buckpasser · When they did the Thoroughbred Legends series, there was a poll taken as to which horse either Bold Ruler or Buckpasser would be the last volume. Bold Ruler won. But I agree Kay, there should be a book about Buckpasser. · 580 days ago
What a pedigree. Coming from the La Troienne line, his dam Busanda was from Man 'o War which traces to Fair Play, and finally Blue Larkspur. Tom Fool is the sire. What a pedigree! Another from E.R Bradley's breeding operation. Finally, in the conversation we had a while ago, Buckpasser and Tom Fool were a pretty good duo.
  • Show All 6 Comments
  • Buckpasser · As a small aside, when E.R. Bradley died, his racing stock was sold. Bimilech, I believe went to the Whitney's and stood at Greentree. La Troienne was purchased by the Phipps family and was at Claiborne. I would imagine her grave stone is there in their cemetery. · 580 days ago
  • buckpasser · Also it should be noted that Sky Mesa and Bernstein trace back to Busanda through her daughters Finance. · 580 days ago
Braulio Baeza rode Buckpasser in the 1966 Arlington Classic to set the mile world record at 1:32 3/5. Two years later on the same track he lowered the record to 1:32 1/5 with Dr. Fager. Was Baeza incredibly lucky, incredibly good, or both?

It is a breeder’s dream to have a father-son combination as talented as Tom Fool and Buckpasser. Both gathered Horse of the Year honors and many more. Is there another sire and offspring that come close to surpassing these two?
  • Show All 14 Comments
  • AnnaK · Maybe the grandsire/grandson thing, only a few more years, then you get MOW and Biscuit. Slew and AP Indy are definitely worth a mention. · 959 days ago
  • airedale2008 · These duos are all excellent choices. Based on this racing community’s ratings, the runaway winning combination appears to be Man o’ War & War Admiral. I was intrigued by Bold Ruler & Secretariat and was very disappointed that this sire is ranked at 160. The 1957 Champion 3 Year Old Male, 1957 Horse of the Year, 1958 Champion Sprint Horse and eight time Leading Sire in North America should have a spot somewhere on the first page. · 958 days ago
