What the Nation is saying about Broad Brush...

Prominent Maryland trainer Richard (Dickie) Small, who conditioned 1994 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Concern, died late Friday night after a battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. He finished his career with 1,199 wins including 36 graded stakes. Three (3) of Small’s trainees won Grade 1 races…Read More
  • BrianZipse · I loved Caeser's Wish and Broad Brush ... as hard-knocking as they come. Another favorite memory of Dickie Small was one of my best betting coups. Dickie Small brought an improving filly named Tactile to New York and shocked them all in both the Gazelle and Beldame. I was on her for both, and it remains one of my biggest back-to back wins on a horse ever. · 9 days ago ·
  • mmidland · Dick Small was a great trainer and did an amazing job with Concern who was one classy late runner! One of my first jobs in racing was being on the 1994 BC Notes team. I was assigned to Dick and Concern and we talked every day leading up to race. The thing I'll never forget is that Dick drove the van with Concern from MD to KY by himself! Shows what type of horseman he was! · 9 days ago ·

In my life as a horse racing fan, the Meadowlands was a special place. For years a very good racing buddy and I went to the races at the Meadowlands every Thursday night. It meant late nights and long drives along the New Jersey Turnpike, but the racing was good and by today’s standards the crowds w...Read More

  • BrianZipse · I could not agree with you more, Matt ... after all, what other horse running in America today combines this kind of ability, longevity, pedigree, and ability to run a mile and a half? · 603 days ago ·
  • ashley.tamulonis · Right on! This is definitely the type of sire we need in American breeding sheds. · 603 days ago ·
Everyone remembers Animal Kingdom’s rise to fame last spring when he parlayed an impressive win in Turfway Park’s Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes with a glorious run for the roses on the first Saturday in May, but he was not the only superstar to make Turfway’s premier Kentucky Derby prep their very own...Read More

  • bellesforever1 · LOVED Hard Spun..was my guy then and now..all heart all the time.To Vic..HS ran his heart out in The Classic and the Derby and in any other year would have had a great chance to win them both so saying he couldn't run past 9 panels isn't really fair because he did.He was at his best under that but he has nothing to hang his head about. He always showed up and ran his race and ducked no one.Thank you Brian for the walk down memory lane.Hard Sun Baby!! · 753 days ago ·
  • RickPorter · Hard Spun's don't come around very often. I also predict he will be the number one sire in America in less that 3 years. · 752 days ago ·
With the forecast of rain for Philadelphia on Saturday, the prospect of a wet Pennsylvania Derby has me thinking back even more to one of the most incredible races I’ve ever seen. When this year’s field enters the starting gate, it will be almost exactly 25 years to the day since Broad Brush pulled ...Read More

Can someone please post the video of Broad Brush winning the '86 Pennsylvania Derby on his profile, or youtube? And his Wood Memorial, Ohio Derby, and Big Cap wins if you've got them, too?!
The Pennsylvania Derby was first run in 1979 at Keystone on Memorial Day with the Woody Stephens trained Smarten taking the winners share of the $100,000 purse. In 1981 the race became a grade three stake.Read More

  • AndyScoggin · Spearfish got claimed from us after about a year and then claimed again. That trainer got him to climb the claiming ladder and win 4 races in a very short period of time. Spearfish was them claimed and disappeared forever. We eventually heard what happened. It is sad that there are a few trainers that don't care about the condition of their horses. I really do believe that those types are the exceptions in racing and that most trainers do care about their horses. · 937 days ago ·
Yeah, Broad Brush was a great horse. I liked his son, Concern. I always try to find horses with Broad Brush in their bloodline.
I can't believe Broad Brush is'nt in the Hall of Fame. This was one Great horse. It's not right.
I was just a toddler when the legend of Hoist The Flag was forged, but through the superlatives littered on him by my Dad, and the magnificence of his offspring, he became one of the most important horses of my childhood. All this despite the fact that I never saw him in person. Like Ahab's white wh...Read More

This is a very good horse who deserves some votes.
I'll have a preview of this weekend's three Derby preps later on today but I wanted to discuss a horse that could end up making a bit of noise this Saturday at Santa Anita, and that's Todd Pletcher's Interactif.  Here's a look at the race record and the pedigree of this would-be Derby contender...Read More

Broad Brush has a special place in my heart. He was my pick to win the 1986 Kentucky Derby when I was in college. He came in third. I went to see him run in the Preakness that year and, again, he came in third. Although he won the Wood and the Meadowlands Cup that year, he really didn't come into hi...Read More
