Reading that Tessio considered Cavaliere d’Arpino the best he ever bred over Ribot and Nearco sent me pondering the plethora of BEST horse lists floated around. Yukichan said it right citing our innate desire for order in chaos and need to compare. Maybe 2 lists, Most Accomplished and Most Capable are in order. There was very little information on Donatello II which intrigues me, should anyone else attempt to give writing an article a whack he sounds like an interesting horse. Jay s, the hope is to either work up to the public relations manager at Suffolk Downs, try training, or writing. Hopefully I'll get over my excessive use of commas. The idea of "love energy" (great way to put it, travel_vic) is still one that plagues racing's breeders today. As part of love energy, Mary, I do believe Tesio tried to have the mare choose the stallion. buckpasser · He was one of the greatest milers in British racing history. He beat Mill Reef who later win the Arc in the 2000 Guineas. He is the yardstick by which any great sprinter is measured in England. He earned 144 on the time form. His loss to Roberto had more to do with Baeza on Roberto upending normal European style racing by grabbing the lead right out of the gate and set very fast fractions. That race was also a mile 1/4 that he lost. The Brigadier was truly one of the greatest racehorses, a true freak · 314 days ago ·

LAZMANNICK · Buckpasser, I agree that he was one of the all-time great milers, but what really makes him one of the all-time greats IMO is that he was undefeated at 10F (5 for 5) and he won his only start at 12F. shadowno · Roberto took almost 3 seconds off the course record that day. To me the fact that it was and still is considered a major upset speaks volumes to the greatness of Brigader Gerard. Roberto was a major player, being a 3X champion and winner of the Epsom Derby. BG also knocked off My Swallow and Mill Reef in earlier forays. The qualituy of his competition is, to me what most seperates BG from Frankel. · 314 days ago ·

buckpasser · Shadowno. I saw both the 2000 guineas with BG beating Mill Reef and the Gold Cup with Roberto. In the Guineas though BG beat Mill Reef handily, it was not MRs distance. He neede a much longer distance like the Arc. With Roberto there is a story behind that race that most Americans don't know. Piggott was Roberto's rider in the Epsom Derby where he was greatly criticized for the numerous time he hit the horse in the final strides. He was even booed when he came back. In the Irish derby Roberto didn't fare very well and when the Benson and zhedges gold cup came up, Piggott told Galbreath that he wanted to ride Rheingold instead. Galbreath was livid and flew in Baeza to ride. The word at the time was Baeza never saw horse until riders up for the cup. Baeza set a torrid pace, never used the crop and handed BG his first loss and Rheingold finished back in the pack. · 314 days ago ·

buckpasser · Laz. The Brigadier was one of my favorite horses of all time. And you are quite right he won at distances greater than a mile, thoug the British still classify Him as a miler. He also raced against some real giants of the turf with Mill Reef, Rheingold, Roberto and others. Though Frankel is impressive, IMO the Brigadier was a better horse given his record and his competition · 314 days ago ·
