  • DeadHeat · I would say Grace gets it again for horse of the year. However, I do think 2012 will end the female streak. The male division looks loaded with some nice horses coming back in PrePeg, MMM, Nehro, AK, Trickmiester, etc. You also have many nice three year olds looking to step up. · 37 days ago ·

  • icyhotboo · A $6,000 claimer winning 20 in a row is nothing short of a miracle, comparable to a horse running a 1 1/2 dirt race in 2:24.0 flat. If you ever owned/trained a horses you know the former is harder. Also a case of good management that some of the owners/trainers of stakes horses should take note of. · 45 days ago ·

  • shadowno · 94 of the mares sent to Blame were either stakes runners or stakes producers. 99 of his mares reported in foal including Cloud Break, dam of the great sprinter Lost In The Fog. Blame's female family is complete racing royalty. He was a quality runer who has the potential to be a top flight sire. The fact he is a Claiborne homebred just adds to the attraction. · 50 days ago ·

  • shadowno · The level playing field not my comment, but with regard to the surface, geography played a part given the tracks proximity to the San Gabriel mountains. Heavy rains and flooding/runoff from the mountains washed away part of the pro-ride surface in 2009-10 costing them racing days and $$$$$. Also, I don't believe it ever drained as advertised like the cushion track that cost multiple dates in 08.. It was a safer surface for horses, by reported fatilities, signifigantly so, even factoring in the lost days. But here (probably even more here given the state budget and miserable economy), as everywhere $$$$ talks and a closed track can't produce revenue. And with Awesome Gem that 1 win happened to be the Hollywood Gold Cup and he produced clutch efforts in the Pacific Classic, San Antonio and Goodwood in over synthetics so I'll give him credit for his ability to handle prety much anything thrown his way. · 59 days ago ·

  • footlick · the other problem with the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita was that they never cleared out the former surfaces completely when installing and then reinstalling the Pro-Ride, so it was never a pure surface to begin with and that added to it's instability · 59 days ago ·

Different Scenarios all around when comparing Z who was waaaayyy out of it in the beginning of The Classic, and spinning her wheels on an unfamiliar track. She still ran her heart out on a track she didn't like and still Won Horse of the Year. As for Union Rags he has been in worse trouble and still won. Let's just admit he wasn't better than Hansen this time! Maybe he'll prove that he can in 2012. · 67 days ago ·

Blame did have a great heart and 100 % deserved Horse of the Year in 2010. Blame fair and square held off Zenyatta. It's not like Zenyatta stumbled or got bumped or anything to hurt her chances. Zenyatta obviously wasn't fast enough to catch Blame.

  • icyhotboo · Very nicely written. I believe Blame to this day doesn't get the credit he deserves. Not only did he run down QR but held off a monsterous charge by Zenyatta in the BCC. Where he belongs in the ratings I don't know or really care. His heart proved to be the largest part of him.
