Older Comments about Black Onyx...

Black Onyx was my favorite three year old last year, excited to see what he can do with Clement as trainer.
Returns on Thursday under new trainer Christophe Clement.
What is up with this horse? Draws the one hole in the Derby and still has yet to run since his victory in the Spiral

G3 Spiral Stakes winner Black Onyx has been cleared to resume light training after receiving several months rest due to a hairline fracture in his left front leg. His connections hope to have him ready in time for Gulfstream's winter meet.
somebody tell me what with him?
  • Floridaf · His original prognosis was an ankle chip, but it turned out that he had a hairline fracture that did not require surgery. He should have had another set of x-rays done last week. I'm not sure when he will return, but the Haskell has been ruled out for sure. · 1326 days ago
BREAKINGB NEWS: He's scratched. Churchill Downs PR ‏@DerbyMedia 7m Breaking News: Black Onyx has been scratched from #KyDerby. Stewards decide that post 1 will be left open. More info coming.
This one has caught my attention for sure and I'll use him in all my tickets. I love his pedigree and his Spiral Stakes win was faster than Animal Kingdom.

  • likin sparks · You know better, it plays a big part time afeter time. I can see one race but multiple impeded time fractions on dirt...we'll see. If any I would use him in my longest shot on the board exotics. · 1399 days ago

  • Mary Z. · I didn't see the lugging. Looked like the rider wanted him to move out to pass the workmate. Not sure that he's slow either. I could be biased since he was a nice winner for me. · 1402 days ago
My annual table of raw times shows Black Onyx 4th in raw speed: 2:00.4 Itsmyluckyday 2:00.8 Govenor Charlie 2:01.6 Goldencents 2:01.9 Black Onyx
  • cocoa2 · These are based off previous final race times I'm guessing, as Govenor Charlie ran over the juiced track and Goldencents ran at Santa Anita while Itsmyluckyday ran a track record? Well, it's as legitamate as pedigree-capping. · 1406 days ago
Black Onyx has 0 Derby strikes if you drop the gelding strike and the fewer than 6 starts strike, counting instead the following eleven strike categories: (1) did not compete in a graded stakes before April, (2) has dosage index over 4.0, (3) did not finish either 1-2-3 in last prep, (4) did not break maiden in 3 or fewer starts, (5) has added front wraps, (6) has not won a graded stakes, (7) was not 1 or 2 at the 1/8 pole in either of last 2 starts, (8) lost position between 1/8 pole and finish in at least one of last 2 races, (9) has not finished 1-2-3 in 9f race, (10) has added blinkers as a 3yo, (11) did not race as a 2yo
here are my thoughts on black onyx and some other derby prospects: black onyx has a short stride and very choppy. he doesn't have that much wasted motion... but, when i had ill have another last year, there was a specific reason: his STRIDE. black onyx didn't show me much, but than again, it was my first time laying eyes on him.. i'll reserve judgement, but he most make improvement before derby. plus, no one he beat came back to do anything. REVOLUTIONARY: this is the guy who never looked good in drills, but had to play on the court to shine. ever heard of one of those? he's never been a good worker from what i have heard, but he actually has ground eating strides. he is very mature, and is obviously comfortable in his surroundings. his gallop today went about 14 furlongs, and he did it nicely. he had some urging to end it, and according to my watch, finished the final furlong (urged) in about 13 flat. very good first impression.... VERRAZANO... here is an inside scoop, EVERYONE READ, he seems to be light. his legs are gross and all. he has long pasterns, unsound, much like his older brother el padrino. they've been giving him some special attention, and practically babying him. he didn't do anything on the track... rumors are spreading.... NORMANDY INVASION... this colt has always been so-so for me... not great, but solid works, slightly behind the crop. i didn't catch him, but i BELIEVE i saw him... IF IT WAS HIM (many people don't understand the confusion amongst the horses) he did OK.... Those are some updates as of now... Talk to you guys tomorrow.

  • tcglory · Huge Advantage im throwing that out of the window now after last year. I really liked daddy noes best last year before the derby and he was shipped early got 4 works in before derby on the main track and still preformed poorly · 1434 days ago
How is black onyx not a derby contender? Cause he won on synethic surface? His Pedigree is geared towards the mile and a quater Derby. Hes a big leggy colt with giant strides in stretch, good for making up ground quick. I tagged him as a legit contender if anything.

Hey y'all. So, I was out last night from 6-11 P.M in Washington D.C... I didn't see all these races 'til an hour ago. I watched the Spiral Stakes (Which I lost monety on).... I read previous posts. Everyone seems to be a bit down on Black Onyx, and everyone is excited with Uncaptured preformance. My take on Black Onyx. I think Black Onyx is a solid horse, but he shouldn't be on the top of lists. I think, as florida filly said in a different thread, I think ultimately it comes down to what surface he prefers. I think he got an easy pace, and faced no legit late speed (Since BTB didn't fire).... Therefore, I don't think he has the ability to last on that hot pace in the derby and against quality late speed. As for Uncaptured. I think he ran a solid race. My only question is why some people are acting like that was an INCREDIBLE preformance? This is a sincere question, why were you (if you were) impressed so much with Uncaptured? He remains near the top of my derby list, I will keep him there. I wasn't encouraged or discouraged. Just a solid performance.

  • rafirox · He got 20 points, which were needed. He now has 30 points. I think a fourth place in a major prep clinches his spot. Decent horse, and should continue to improve, has a solid foundation too. · 1436 days ago
  • MarcelloMarocco · Still up on Uncaptured because it was his first race since Nov, at a new distance. He Did fantastic. Give me Uncaptured in the Derby with two races under his belt , then Black Onyx. · 1436 days ago
Congrats to the connections and BO on a great win. Unfortunately, I don't think this horse stands a chance in the derby. Looked green (had trouble running straight down the stretch, ala Union Rags early last year), seems to not be a dirt horse, and faced no solid closers in the Spiral. Starting to dislike the whole 'win 1 big race and you're in the derby' points system
