"Was his close into a slow pace against quality speed? Or was it a close into slow pace, but he was facing zero quality speed and just outclassed the field? The second option, to me, is more likely." I don't see the difference. Slow is slow, no matter who is running.

Cocoa. Personally, I think winning the Derby has a lot to do with correct style, staying out of traffic and getting the distance. Revolutionary's Withers win was either a sign he can get out of traffic, or he is traffic prone. I think he got in bad traffic with a small field, imagine with 19 other horses. Also, he breaks slow. That is never a good attribute in the Derby. That coulf be fixed with some horses, but Todd Pletcher says it is his personality "laziness" On top of that, the Withers field was weak, and hasn't come back to do much. I'm not high on him, at all.

I'm saying, icy, maybe if he faced quality speed going slow (harder to pass) or non-quality speed going slow (while there going slow, they aren't quality) Zenyatta often just simply closed into a slow pace with quality speed. Vyjack, imo, just won because he was better than the field.... Something's missing with him. IMO.

CD is a very quirky track. Either horses love it or hate it. A lot of triple were lost there, Point Given was the one that comes to mind, as he towered over that field. Of course that pace was crazy 45 to the half.

Yes, very quirky. That, in my opinion, is what makes Uncaptured a top prospect (#4).... He's proven over the surface. That's also why I don't like Vyjack that much. He's not proven away from Aquduect.

Completly agree with Palace Malice being first. If he can mature some, he'll be hard to beat. I agree with about 1/2 the horses on your list, but like cocoa, I don't like putting them in any order- not yet at least

" i count 7 horses here i dont see making it and thats means in my eyes a bad list" I do like to point out, my list is who I think could WIN the Derby if in it, not who's going to make it. I think Revolutionary is a good race horse, but he ain't good for the DERBY, imo. @Dressage... I don't see how people could make fun of me for this one. Some people are saying Palace Malice has no chance... I won't bet him if he doesn't mature from here to the derby... But, he was very green in the LA Derby, against some good colts (#3 Code West, #13 Oxbow), and testing a route distance for the first time. He dropped furtherr back than normal (EXPERIENCE), and got caught behind a wall of horse (EXPERIENCE)... He's got the pedigree to go far. IF he matures, he is one to watch. How could one make fun of me? The Derby winner usually under the radar. I'll Have Another (15-1), Animal Kingdom (20-1), Super Saver (9-1), Mine That Bird (50-1). I'll just sit back and enjoy the odds.

my list is who I think could WIN the Derby if in it, not who's going to make it." I think rafirox needs understanding on what a derby list is suppose to be. Its a list of the top 12 16 however many you do, on who is the best. You make these list to rank who is the best 3 year olds pointing to the Kentucky derby and as we get closer to the Derby the list should include any horse who qualified with enough points so far cause they have done enough to get in based on wins and points. And this new point system is gonna let everyone know who is the best 3 year old "NOW WHO WILL MAKE THE KENTUCKY DERBY STARTING GATE" not who is the ebst by the end of the year. And If you wanna see my list well you can everyday on almsot any horse racing website, cause my list is the top 20 horses in points earings cause thoes 20 have proven to be the best so far. And the derby winner is usually under the radar? So no favorites can win??????? Dam im gonna have to start betting longshots every year then root for the underdog I guess.

6 horses who won the derby in the past 12 runnings have either been the favorite or a top 3 choice so you really cant say usually the winner is a longshot under the radar horse

He's a front runner, which I don't like in the derby. Only will run four times before the derby. Yet, he's number two based on his pure talent. He hasn't been tested at all.-rafiroxs comments on verrazano. You must have never liked bodemeister last year before the derby then cause hes got the same if not worse credentials. He didnt break his madien at first asking, when he faced winners for first time he didnt win and only in his 4th start agasint a lower then average field did he have a big win and he still went in to derby still made the lead and almost won??????????????????????????????? So front runners have all the chance.

I can't understand why a lot of people don't like Palace Malice either. I have since his maiden win. With Curlin being his sire, I think it will take longer for him to mature, but I believe he is a serious threat come derby time.

@Dressage: I know! I remember watching his maiden win (I was at the track for the Whitney and West Virginia Derby on 8/4/12, and he was running) I loved what I saw. I don't have a watch list that early (I make start evaluating performance in January) but I immediately took note of him. The reason I like him is not for what he has accomplished, but what I believe he has the potential too. He's facing some tough colts in the LA Derby (Code West #3, Departing #5, Oxbow #13, Revolutionary) so he's in for a tough task. All I know is this certainly green colt from Curlin has all the appropriate attributes to contest in the derby. If he doesn't mature in time, I won't bet him but he has a bright future.

In my last top 16 i had orb #1 and imld #3, i think they both proved to be top derby contenders. Although im still not 100% sold on Rev, not sure if he was a victim of a bad trip or a benifactor, he did prove he belongs in the show. I had him at #11, he definately is moving up after his 2nd stakes win!

Female Famlies and the Kentucky Derby
Many articles have been authored regarding the sires and sire lines of U.S. Classic winners. Like their sire counterparts, certain distaff lines produce more classic victors than others.

Black Onyx might do ok from the pp1, his size may help him there.. perhaps not get so knocked around like Lucky did. I'm considering doing that TVG double your odds bet on him, $10-20. Concerned the pace might hurt GC this time, though he is a sentimental fav of mine. I don't care for Verrazano and Mylute's high head action, may lead to 'hanging. IMLD def can step up, and looks great. Overanalyze I can see anywhere in the super(Oaklawn was said to be a deeper track this year. Vyjack..it takes at least 56 days for horses to get their blood count up back up after abs. Orb..hope they xray before. Waiting to see Lines of Battle on the track, but w/out time to acclimate I dunno even know why I brought him up lol

tothmr, I have been on the fence about Verrazano for a few months. Before his TB Derby win, I felt that he was all hype and hadn't really proved anything, and his Wood win didn't impress me as much as it did for most. It came down to him and Revolutionary for the 5th spot, and I ultimately opted for Verrazano because of his running style and because he really hasn't done anything wrong.

Verrazano: it is one thing to mount a late move after travresing about 62% of the race in close to 1;14 and VERY much different to overcome a 1:12 and change which has been the average pace of race the past several runnings.....We will see how the pace of race profile projects as, as usual, there are going to be some prompters who are going to PUSH it faster, with little or not hope of being around late...IT is how this one handles the real pacers that will count.

Giant Finish is 50-1, and he has alot of color in his 5 starts, 2 wins, 1 place and 1 third. Sounds to me like alot of improvement can make a victory for in the money.

EdF, after reviewing the charts, checking the weather reports, and re-watching the races themselves, it does appear that Black Onyx's debut race was indeed over a fast track. However, in his maiden breaking race, the track appears to be wet fast. Both races were supposed to be run on the turf, but both were taken off the turf and ran over the main track instead. I do stand by my opinion that Black Onyx will fare better on a wet/muddy track.

It looks like most of the favorites got pretty good post positions, Revolutionary and Vyjack will need some luck from post 3 and 20, but it doesn't seem like any of the top horses were eliminated at the draw which has happened in the past. Now lets just hope the weather is good.

ORB might have to struggle to get into position, for Java's War it is ok, since it comes off the space, it will be a problem for Revolutionary, Normandy Invasion and Mylute as they also comes off space, they might get into pocket?

Pumpsiam, actually With a 20-horse field, they are loaded two at a time. Post 1 and 11 go first, 2 and 12, 3 and 13, and so forth. Ten and 20 enter together at the end.

R. BEJERANO HAS HAD A GREAT YEAR- SO #9 PP FOR OVERANALYZE SOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM.....WHAT SCARES ME MORE IS C. BOREL NOT PP#3 THAT REVOLUTIONARY WILL BE BREAKING OUT OF.... JAVA'S WAR HAS GREAT COME FROM BEHIND SPEED- BUT WILL HE HOLD UP, SO PP#19 WILL NOT MATTER... PP #14 UNDER THE WHIP OF J. VELASQUEZ, VERRAZANO SHOULD HAVE A GOOD TRIP- ..... WITH ROSIE NAPRAVNICK ABOARD #6 MYLUTE WILL BE IN GOOD HANDS- HIS PP SHOULD ALLOW ROSIE TO PACE HIM 6 BEHIND THE PACK, AND CHARGING SECOND TURN WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE MAKER...... TRIFECTA -----> 14, 9,8 .. 6 & 10 WILL PUT UP A FIGHT IF ALL GOES RIGHT. LONG-SHOT 20-1 PALACE MALICE

the riders CANNOT change the "in effect" motor car they are on....They simply are slaves to adapting to the pace of race, whatever that may be....The only real difference amongst over 95% of all horses racing is the pace of race they go up against and theur ability to adapt or not adapt to those pressures. The rider cannot alter that.

Lisa111 - Did you watch the Post Position Draw show last night? They were pretty clear it is an outside - in load and commented several times how Vyjack better like crowd noise becasue he is going to be in the gate with the noise for quite awhile as the others load.

You know better, it plays a big part time afeter time. I can see one race but multiple impeded time fractions on dirt...we'll see. If any I would use him in my longest shot on the board exotics.

He lugged in the stretch, required some encouragement, and hardly put away the 'mate. Wasn't an ecouraging breeze for a colt who is already not stacked up to compete, as he is simply too slow.

I didn't see the lugging. Looked like the rider wanted him to move out to pass the workmate. Not sure that he's slow either. I could be biased since he was a nice winner for me.

"“I was very, very pleased the way he worked,” Rodriguez said. “He did everything I asked for. I’m happy with the way he breezed and everything is 100 percent right.” Vyjack did not breeze the full distance. After 3f he had to be whipped and kicked in the belly once. Why they would start him in that condition makes one wonder.
