  • Disco747 · I'm afraid I'm not entirely convinced about the horses that cocoa2 and travel_vic mentioned. I haven't been able to find complete records for all of them, so I can really only speak for some of them now. I don't think Dr. Fager could be considered a true sprinter, as he had one run over 6f and one run over 5 1/2f. He also had several runs over 7f, but most of his races were over 1 mile plus, so I'd consider him to be more of a fast mile to middle-distance horse who would be better compared to Sea The Stars, for example. Dayjur would be more of a match for Black Caviar, but I still think she'd beat him, although maybe only by a short distance. Lost In The Fog may also be a match for Black Caviar, but although he may never have been beaten when he was right, Black Caviar has never been beaten, period. · 1 day ago ·

I took the time last night to go over ever horse Black Caviar's faced in all 21 races. What passes as a stakes winner in Australia is laughable. She's beaten 2 good horses in 21 races. Hay List and recent G1 Al Quoz Sprint winner, Ortensia. There's a few more G1 winners she's beaten, but very few, and none other than maybe Scenic Blast anyone in America would've heard of, and Scenic Blast saw his best days a good while back. She's beaten several G2 winners and bunchhhhhhhhhhhh of G3 and lesser winners. Hell, no wonder she's 21 for 21. In his 10 races, Frankel's beaten 10 G1 winners totaling 28 G1 wins between them. Canford Cliffs, Dream Ahead, Rio De La Plata, Immortal Verse, Dick Turpin, Treasure Beach, Excelebration, Poet's Voice, Nathaniel, and Zoffany. That's 10 G1 winners who've won 28 G1 races in only 10 starts. After seeing what Frankel did to the 3rd highest rated horse in the world off a 200+ day lay-off on Saturday, I'm more convinced than I ever was that at 6f, 2 to 3 lengths behind Frankel is the best BC could hope for. At 7f or a mile, forget it. He buries her. Just like he's done to Canford Cliffs, Excelebration, Dick Turpin, and all the others before her.

For anyone who doubts Black Caviar and the quality of her competition. You should watch the 2012 William Reid Stakes on you tube,Foxwedge's finishing speed is phenomenal, he catches and goes past Haylist with two seperate bursts of amazing speed
  • RichardBlakley · Don't harbor ANY doubts about BC, clearly the best racing today. All due respect to Frankel and the somewhat underpraised Awesome Feather, there is a WORLD of difference between 9 or 10 and 20 straight at this level. Big ups to BC, and her connections for their astute judgment. · 3 days ago ·

I like this mare, and I think she's an incredible sprinter. One of the best I've ever seen in my lifetime. But that said, I've just about lost all any and all respect for Black Caviar's connections. Because they continue to treat her like the "Rapid Redux" of Australia. Which is to say, they keep dodging facing sprinters any better than Hay List simply to keep an unbeaten record going. She keeps beating up on the same ole same in Australia, and frankly, it's been boring for awhile now. No one would argue that Australia has always bred some of the best sprinters in the world. But the fact is, they're G1 level sprints are not recognized as being among the best G1 level sprint races in the world. Most of those are in Europe and Asia, i.e., races like the G1 Prix de l' Abbaye in France, the G1 July Cup, Sprint Cup, Golden Jubilee Stakes, and King's Stand Stakes in Great Britain, the G1 Krysflyer International in Singapore, and the G1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin are among some of the most universally recognized top G1 sprint races world wide. It's past time for her to make appearances outside of Australia. What ever happened to the notion of her going to Dubai and running in the G1 Golden Shaheen this year? I thought her connections were supposed to be all excited at the prospect of her running in that race? In all candor, I can't believe Black Caviar's ranked above Frankel in the active rankings on this web-site? At least Frankel hasn't dodged the best turf milers in the world in any of his races? Not only has he faced several of them, he's gone on to run them bowlegged. But TJMO.

  • Mary Z. · Here, you must have missed this from BH on 2/22: Black Caviar who won the group I Coolmore Lightning Stakes at 1,000 meters Feb. 18 at Flemington on six days’ rest, was being considered for the Feb. 25 group I Futurity Stakes at Caulfield and a trip to Dubai in March. But trainer Peter Moody, in a column in the Daily Telegraph, said the 5-year-old mare wouldn’t race anytime soon. “I put ‘Nelly’ in the paddock at a destination that I’m not disclosing as the mare deserves some peace and quiet for the next couple of weeks,” Moody wrote in the Daily Telegraph. “There’s nothing wrong with her; to the contrary, she’s at the top of her game but it’s all geared around having her at her peak when she flies across to (Great Britain).” The group I Diamond Jubilee Stakes is scheduled for June 23 at Royal Ascot. Moody said Black Caviar “will not run in Sydney this autumn, while plans to race her in Dubai and against English superstar Frankel have also been quashed. I’ve got no doubt that Black Caviar could have gone to the Futurity and just won as easily as she did in the Orr Stakes earlier in the month, but it would have been her fourth run in five weeks. “I had to look at the bigger picture. What would I have had left? She has pulled up 110% from her record-breaking run in the Lightning Stakes, and I wanted to keep it that way. If she heads to the paddock in that condition it’s only going to enhance her prospects for her next campaign.” Moody in the newspaper said Black Caviar could return in late April for one of two races in Australia before making the trip to Great Britain. Update, which she did, winning the two races after her rest to improve her record to 21 wins and no losses. • lonhro · Yeah, you are asking too much. Our spring carnival coinceides with the Breeders Cup so its almost impossible for an Australian horse to go, considering there is just as much prizemoney on offer at home. It'd be great if she went, you would get to see a real living legend of the sport. · 12 days ago ·

Congratulations to Black Caviar and her connects on win no. 20 from 20 runs! Go Black Caviar! Incidentally, Black Caviar has already beaten males over 5, 6, and 7 furlongs. I don't really see why she has to prove herself over further, or on dirt or Polytrack. It would be wonderful if she did win some good Group 1s over further, especially if she wins as easily as she does in sprints, then she would be like a female version of Secretariat. I just don't think it's strictly necessary, since for me anyway, she's already proved her greatness, and as a brilliant turf horse, I'm not sure that it would be entirely fair to expect her run on dirt or synthetic. Great if she does, though!

  • shadowno · If breathing properly is performance enhancing so be it. Much preferable to returning to the US with scarred airways like Silver Charm to never be the same. It is not going away without forfeiting a generation of US racehorses which might be a solution, but also a situation that might kill the patient. · 27 days ago ·

  • Mary Z. · shadow, you sure about the scarred lungs thing? That's not what the owners said according to this news article from the time of Silver Charm's retirement after the 1999 Stephen Foster . He'd won the '98 DWC and had a quite decent end of year afterwards, so we can assume his lungs weren't scarred from lack of the (please educate yourself as best you can on this ) evil L needle. He reportedly bled(not sure to what degree) in the '99 DWC, but the owner is quoted as saying after the Foster , ""He came out of the race in great shape, ... and he's going to be retired in beautiful condition." and Lewis said Silver Charm had bulked up, weighing in excess of 1,300 pounds, which was affecting his performance on the track. "He's really grown into that enormous frame that he has," Lewis said. "... To get that jump start that he had been able to before just took a lot of ability. He wasn't able to go on with it." "There is a time when horses tell you whether they want to continue to run or not. And I think that time has arrived." Salix is a performance enhancer. It does not cure nor prevent EIPH. When horses do bleed during a race(and there are various degrees from microscopic to visible from the nostrils), w/something like 95% of runners on it, they are bleeding through the Salix anyway. That drug functions as a strong diuretic, causing considerable fluid loss(and therefore pre-race weight loss) which can lead to dehydration.
