"Bated Breath, who would have been one of the top contenders in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, was retired over the weekend. The son of Dansili will stand at stud next season." (--drf.com)

I sadly just read on AtTheRaces.com that trainer Roger Charlton has decided to scratch Bated Breath out of Saturday's G1 July Cup. Apparently Charlton felt that the ground on Newmarket's July Course on Saturday would be a big concern for his star sprinter. I'm a really big fan of Bated Breath and have been since he was still running in handicaps in the UK before he made the jump to patent stakes races. Really a tough for break Bated Breath because he had looked so impressive in his first 2 races of the 2012 season. Winning the G2 Temple Stakes at Haydock and finishing a very game 2nd behind Little Bridge in the G1 King's Stand Stakes at Ascot last month. Bated Breath came so close to winning the G1 July Cup last season with that dramatic finish against Dream Ahead where he was beaten only a whisker in a photo finish that I really hate it for the horse that he's not going to get a second chance at winning the July Cup. Nothing was said for certain, but my best guess is that Charlton will likely follow the same path with Bated Breath that he took with him in 2011? Which means we'll likely see him turn up next in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August and then the G1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock in September. Another G1 race that Bated Breath lost in photo finish to Dream Ahead last season.
...Had set a new course record in England last out in a Group 2 over five furlongs, but now listed as probable for the 6-furlong Diamond Jubilee (Eng-I) vs. Black Caviar. Will be interesting to see how Europe's top sprinter fares against the Aussie supermare!
