rafirox · @Zatt... These past few days, amongst other things, I have been rewatching prep races. I also noticed, which I didn't notice last time, Goldencents' stride was shortening almost dramatically. Flashback was injured and had an excuse. While I praise this horse, and CALLED his potential and told EVERYONE he's one to watch after his Sham Stakes, I was very disappointed with his stretch run, rewatching it. He switch leads faster, (unlike the Sham), he still lugged a bit. After rewatching, he still has those "issues" I jotted down on here after his Sham Stakes. Those issues have not disappeared, but they're still there. I'll await PP's, but I don't think he is my Derby horse..... Right now it appears Orb is on top of the list, especially after rewatching his races several times... Have a good one, Brian. · 37 days ago ·

I use to think the TB format was the only way to go. Wrong, it's no unpredictable and sometimes if steers you wrong. I remember talk about Unbridled being crocked, poor confirmation, bad running style, etc., etc. Hmm, he proved them wrong at the tract and the breeding shed. UnionRagsRules · Goldencents is my number one right now, but I can see why you couldn't like him. He has everything going for him, the only thing the would worry me is pedigree. SA Derby, he was just slowed. Krigger knew he had it in the bag! Even then, horses have proved time and time again that they can outrun their pedigree. Sometimes it is just all in the horse. How could you say he throws in the towel? The horse was tired the only time he finished off the board (to many fast, long works) and he ALWAYS tries his hardest and in the end, pedigree doesn't win races. Horses do. DipakRoy · i am not fan of Goldencents, but one can not say that he can not win the derby because of pedigree does not indicate any good stamina sire or styer, i completely disagree, in his blood there is a sire who ran upto 1-1/4 miles and placed 2nd in 1988 derby behind Alyseba, he might not win the derby but in this year most of the derby prep's timing were beyond 1.50.27, only Goldencents had 1-48.26, 2 second difference, and i think it is too much, 2 seconds mean 10-12 lengths advantage, on the contrary Into Mischief might be a 7 furlonger, but he was very strong and stamina minded horse, trained by Mandella, last year in the derby those horse came within 6th placing order had a timings in 1-1/8 miles below 1-50 sec, those horse had over 1-50 second timing in the derby prepssis not success, timing plays a great role same as pedigree, workout, trainer and jockey, Goldencents might not be a super horse but he beat a very good horse Flashback in S.A. Derby, i will give Goldencents credit for that, he survive 2 turns in S.A. icyhotboo · Very nice article. I love your Iron Maidens site and visit frequently. I thought G was eased up and had more. How much I wouldn't hazard a guess, as we never really know until we get there. I thought BI ran very nice, as due to the many horses with early speed his position wasn't good, I didn't think he'd get there. Since I had both in 1st and 2nd position on my tickets with those tight turns and short stretch I didn't think much of my chances. In regard to pedigree I'd be interested to know how far back you go and if you give equal weight to both sire and dam. I review a pedigree differently for handicapping than I do for breeding. For handicapping, I focus on the first two generations. I will go back further to the 2nd dam if a horse has a pedigree borderline for distances. I give equal weight to both sides of the pedigree. I agree, this could be the basis for an article. He told me that the 6th through ninth generation cements who you are, and we were talking horses.I can't remember what he meant by that though and was hoping you might have an idea as I too look at pedigree from different points of view depending what I'm using it for. I was in with standardbreds and followed a particular line, Most Happy Fella branch of Meadow Skipper. rafirox · @keith. You have a point. However, just to make clear, he was not whipped 20 times in the last eighth. It was a slow final quarter yes, but I think that might have to do with his stubborness to switch leads. Kevin was asking for him to go, and Goldencents was ignoring the cue. Kevin was trying to get him to switch, but he wouldn't. Once he did, however he blew by the field, while lugging his head to the stands. I think the slow final time partly has to do with his tardy move in the stretch. If he runs like THIS (The Issues) I am with you, he will not make noise on the trail. However, many of these problems can be fixed with simple experience. As he matures from now to May, he can improve, both physically and mentally. He WILL fill out. And mentally as he matures, he might learn to run straight in the stretch. · 135 days ago ·
