The injury of horses especially the catastrophic injurys on the track is the biggest problem in racing today. I belived it is the main reason of the decline of racing from a popular sport to a disappearing niche sport. Every time a horse is destroyed on the track racing loses hundreds or thousands of fans if it is a big race on TV. I know horses have always been injured on the track and can break a leg running in a pasture, but peoples attitudes about animals are different today and racing will not survive if it is not made safer.

Mike, racing cannot be 'made' safer. It is a sport with athletes and those athletes get injured. Sadly, the athletes are horses and cannot be told to get 3 weeks of bed rest to run again. They are animals. People need to understand that these horses are doing what they love and whenever a horse hurts itself, they are running so hard because they want to win. They want to please us. We can't make them not do that. We never will.

It was a sad, tragic weekend. I have to agree with Mike in SB. There are things that can be done in attempt to create a safer sport and hopefully this is enough to at least have the industry wake up and realize they need to make some changes and can no longer turn a blind eye or sweep it under the rug. True, it will never be injury free, but that does not mean that we ignore the issue altogether, we owe the horses that at the very least.

It is sad but sadly its apart of the sport. I have delt with this in auto racing as well and its never easy. As the owners, trainers etc have sadness now, they need to remember the joy as well. In auto racing we always said best way to honor those who have fallen is to race on. So for the stables who lost champions this weekend I say God bless you and Race on.

Waltzing With Blue also broke down at Hollywood Park on Saturday and was euthanized. Not as well known as the others, but equally deserving of recognition for his falll in the line of duty (so to speak).

Thank you for your moving tribute to these incredible athletes who give their all for our racing enjoyment. This is the hard part that is so heartbreaking for all. and I'm sure you would add Waltzing with Blue to your list of athletes deserving of mention.

Thank you for this worthy tribute to our grand and magnificent equine athletics - they leave a hoof print on our hearts and souls! This was a sad and tragic weekend and it's difficult to deal with the loss of so many - particularly for those of us who try and support Hollywood Park in person and not in front of the tv. I love this sport and always worry about public reaction. I also hope that Hollywood Park makes sure that its Turf track is safe for the future races of this period. Blessings to all of those wonderful horses!

Their passing really saddens me greatly. My sympathy goes out to the horses, the jockeys, the trainers, the owners and all of the connections that care and love the horse on a daily basis. So sad indeed!
