Is I’ll Have Another the best horse in America?
I’ll Have Another was the unanimous number one selection in the three year-old poll, but in the poll for all divisions he was ranked in second behind Alternation.

I beg to differ, Brian. As of right now, I don't see how I'll Have Another hasn't already won Horse of the Year, regardless of what happens in a few weeks at Belmont. Unless an older horse like either of the Dan's goes undefeated (especially Wise Dan if that 117 wasn't an outlier), I don't see what any horse can do to surpass what I'll Have Another has already accomplished, and it's only the end of May.

Thanks for the inclusion with such an esteemed list, Matt ... and to Matt B, No horse clinches the Horse of the Year in May, but they certainly can with a Triple Crown. I am rooting for him!

I'm on the fence here. Logically speaking, I have to agree that horses in the handicap divisions have a slight edge because they are facing their elders and are being weighted, but given the circumstances surrounding Alternation and I'll Have Another, I would argue that you have to throw logic out the window. I'll Have Another has accomplished a lot so far this year, and Alternation just threw his name back in the mix. For me, I'll Have Another would have to be #1 right now.

I am going to say at the moment he is the best horse in America, having said that... I will not crown him the Horse of the Year until the year is over. The year is not even half over yet... Remember 2004, the year Smarty Jones almost won the Triple Crown, then was retired b/c of chronic bruising before ever running again? So much can happen between now and the end of the year to crown him HOY right now. And honestly I still have some reservations saying he is currently the best.

Best horse in America? I don't know? Time will tell when start getting into the part of the season where you see the 3yr.old's able to take on the older horses. But I think best 3yr.old in America is certainly a fair description. When a 3yr.old's won a G1 Santa Anita Derby, G1 Kentucky Derby, G1 Preakness, and is staring racing immortality right in the face if he can win the G1 Belmont Stakes, it's no fluke. That horse has real ability. JMO.

It take a truly oustanding horse to overcome a horse like Bodemeister given the fractions he set in the Preakness. If IHA wasn't in that race it would have just been another Arkasas Derby type romp. Brad Free has selected this horse in every race since the San Felipe 100% isn't bad. Luckily for me I follow his picks. At one time fairly recently one of his books was selling for $700. now they are all gone and I wanted that one badly. Best handicapper I've come across and I've been riding his coatails for many years.

Well written, Ashley! Great job in the 2012 roundup and nice perspective on emerging rivalries in the various divisions. I'm excited about 2012 for many of the reasons you recited. I keep hoping that the 2011 year that was a muddle will dawn into a 2012 with some real stars rising to the fore! I share your enthusiasm for On Fire Baby and Now I Know. I do worry about Eight Belles' brother, Unbridled's Way...for obvious reasons.

Chris, I felt the exact same way about MMM. I look forward to seeing him build on the foundation he established at Gulfstream. Wes, I completely overlooked Horse of the Meet. As I stated, there really was not a true standout, but if I had to choose, I would select Mucho Macho Man. Ron the Greek flattered his Sunshine Millions win with a score in the Big Cap, and MMM beat a couple of tough competitors in Jackson Bend and Tackleberry in the Gulf Cap. It sounds biased since we all know how much I like MMM, but it also makes sense if you look at it logically.

I should also add, Wes, that Jackson Bend went on to win the G1 Carter Handicap next out over a deep field.

I think El Padrino is a good colt, I just don't think anyone is going to beat Union Rags. Trainer's description last year: big, fast and smart . Rags has shown that he can win on the lead, handle traffic, run on a sloppy track, and the jockey can rate him. And I am so happy that Pletcher is not his trainer!

Union Rags is a good horse, but I wasn't impressed with his last race in the FOY. I thought if he was as good as people say he is then he should have won by greater lengths because the only decent horse in there was Discreet Dancer and we all know how that turned out lol. Union Rags hasn't even hit a 100 beyer yet, but of course that doesn't mean he won't in the Florida Derby. I think this will be a fantastic showdown and I'm looking forward to it more than my bday! Haha! Best wishes to you :)

IMO Leparoux is the wilier, abit like an invisible fox around a henhouse, so would bet on him, and personally think UR is the stronger physically and mentally. But there are a few others in there that I really like too, so a great race to think about.

Chad Brown is so proud of this horse, he has such an affection for her, he only wants her to be sound, God Forbid anything ever happen to her on his watch. Did it ever occur to anyone that he truly loves this horse and does not want to take even the slightest chance with her well being? She is in the very best hands and as someone who adores this horse, I thank God for Chad Brown

Awesome Maria put on a show in the show ring that Zenyatta would be proud of. She danced and pranced as though she was competing in the show ring and she would have won in that venue as well. You go girl!! I hope that someone makes a video of her show; she was the entertainment for the day at Gulfstream. What a talented and dominant filly. So glad to have her come back. And it was escpecially a treat for her owner, Mrs. Robsham; this year is the 20th anniversary of New Vocations, the retired thoroghbred retraining organization she and her late husband founded.

Totally agree that Awesome Maria was impressive yesterday, but I dont put alot of stock in a true classic distance horse prepping in a 8.5f race. Bill Mott has a plan for RD and she gets stronger as the races get longer. She was very much up against it yesterday, lightly trained and cutting way back in distance from her best trip. I believe she will get a piece of it in Dubai.
