What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

A few days prior to the Breeders' Cup, I started to write something about how horses with prep races run on dirt had failed so abysmally over Pro-Ride at Santa Anita the year before. I was going to list all of the 2009 dirt-to-Pro-Ride horses, label them throwouts and advise the public that they wou...Read More
If there is one thing you can always count on in the Breeders' Cup it's that it will have it's share of longshot winners and mid-price overlays who get lost in the handicapping frenzy that is so much a part of the event.Read More
Coolmore and trainer Aidan O'Brien took a chance by entering only Rip Van Winkle in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), despite the colt's history of foot problems, and now they could wind up without a horse in the race if Rip's most recent setback proves serious enough to force his withdrawal.Read More
  • gardenesque1 · Rip Van Winkle has run through foot problems all year, but in a wide open BC Classic, I want nothing to do with a horse less than 100%. · 96 days ago
  • cigar · Agreed! Nasty deal... he's one of those have to use, now this gives me an excuse to TOSS. · 96 days ago
For the fans of Zenyatta, the possibility of a hot pace bodes well for the closing mare in Saturday’s $5 million Classic. With one confirmed speed horse and three possible pressers, the long run to the first turn and the excitement of the crowd, the pace could easily heat-up to a level where anywher...Read More

  • cigar · Colonel John would need a career best race and it might not be good enough, but an on-the-board finish at a big price? Maybe. As for Zenyatta, a friend of mine posted this on Facebook: Bob Baffert on Zenyatta taking on the boys in the Classic: "It's a big question mark but it’s going to be answered. It’s a championsip race and that’s what it’s all about. If she’s a true champion she’ll do. It if she’s a filly and mare champion she won’t." · 97 days ago
  • Rossington · My guess is with Regal Ransom and Quality Road on the front end it will be very quick fractions. This could set up the race perfectly for a late closer like Zenyatta or Gio Ponti. · 97 days ago
In looking at the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), several thoughts and angles emerged that could have a bearing on the race. While they may turn out to be mere folly, they are at least worth mentioning just to make sure all bases are covered and there is less of a chance of Monday morning quarterback...Read More
  • Rossington · It's almost game time. After studying it, analyzing it, and playing over and over again in my mind's eye, this is how I see the Classic turning out: Rip Van Winkle turn's out to be as good as Aiden O'Brien advertised and win's the Classic. Provided she goes, Zenyatta closes late but fall's just short of catching RVW and get's second. An also late closing Gio Ponti comes right on Zenyatta's heels and narrowly get's by a tiring Quality Road, who's ran a big race himself, to claim third. That's it, that's how I see the Classic unfolding. So do I need to go see a shrink or what? · 97 days ago
Part four of my Breeders’ Cup Classic blog, and below is a look at the final four pre-entrants. Colonel John rates a longshot look in the Classic. 2-time local graded winner just missed in the Goodwood, and he won the Grade 1 Travers at this distance last year. He was my Ky Derby top in ‘08, and I h...Read More
If I have learned one thing since arriving at Santa Anita earlier this week, or from previous experiences prior to the 2008 Breeders' Cup and this past spring in Louisville before the Kentucky Derby, it's this: If you want to see the Godolphin horses train you had better plan on getting up early. Ve...Read More
As we all know there is always an angle or two we can latch on to in the Breeders' Cup. The trick is finding them among the morass of stakes horses that line up for the 14 races. There probably are more chances of landing a longshot on a synthetic surface, because, in all honesty, does anyone really...Read More
If Sea the Stars does not make the trip to California, which seems more likely than not, and joins Rachel Alexandra on the absentee list, it will create a void never before seen in the Breeders’ Cup. Read More

  • mshutty · And the BC organization has no one to blame but itself. Remember when we all had a collective moan when it was announced that the BC would be held at Santa Anita two consecutive years? Our disdain for this idea is justified. I agree wth mdracing...what do the connections of Rachel have to prove. The only risk to the HOY honors is running in the BC and getting beat. If you owned/trained Rachel, what would you do? · 125 days ago

Third in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic and sixth in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Mile, Awesome Gem is bound for another Breeders' Cup start on the heels of his brave victory Saturday in the Hawthorne Gold Cup. The question is which one. "We haven't mapped out a plan yet," trainer Craig Dollase said Monda...Read More
