  • buckpasser · Yes MacMahon overruled Johnny Longden and ran MP in the Belmont Stakes. MP had come out of the Preakness with some tenderness in his right front which was the reason why Longden did not want the horse to run in the Belmont. At the time MacMahon agreed with Longden ( they were very close friends). He even added that They wanted a TC not a Cripple Crown. Supposedly what got to MacMahon was the intense pressure for a TC win and I read that the the final straw was Whitney Tower's article in Sports Illustrated accusing MacMahon et Al of ducking the Big One. So after a shouting match with Longden, MacMahon ran MP in the Belmont. Baeza on Arts and Letters set a slow pace and Hartack miss judged the pace. Hartack was savaged for his ride by the press the next day with many including Russ Harris and David Alexander etc. comparing this ride to that on ND. Hartack maintained that running him in the Belmont was a huge mistake because the horse was hurting. Longden tried to bring the horse back to the races later that year but was unsuccessful. I remember talk about MP coming back for the Travers and possibly the Woodward, but it came to naught. · 182 days ago
Buckpasser, last night i was watching the Super Bowl with a few friends. With the decision academic. We started talking horses. We went back in time to where the predomenant owners were the major Stables. My favorite of all time was Rokeby Stables. I always loved Mack Miller. But my friend brought up there history,a little before me. He mentioned that Elliot Burch trained for them. I did not know that. I remember himtraining the Whitney horses. The horse i want to ask you about is Arts and Letters. I always knew the name, but never paid attention to the actual history. To my surprise,i found out that this guy was 2 heads off in the Derby and Preakness from being a Triple Crown Winner. I have heard you discuss many top horses . How did he rank amonst the greats. Was he that good,or was he around in a year there were not any top horses. I know he lost the first 2 legs to Majestic Prince. But i never heard him being compared to the greats.

Arts & Letters and Fort Marcy were bred by Paul Mellon of Rokeby Stables in Upperville, Virginia. Mr. Mellon is the only owner to win the Kentucky Derby (Sea Hero), Epsom Derby (Mill Reef) and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Mill Reef). Virginia breeders were common in years past, but now number far less with the passing of Paul Mellon, Edward Evans (Quality Road and Saint Liam) and the sale in 1979 of Meadow Farm. Ellerslie Stud moved the bulk of their business to form Claiborne Farm years ago, and sold the Virginia farm in 1946.

  • cab2536 · With Farish in charge, they'll take turns alternating between Santa Anita and Churchill Downs. Any other venue that wants consideraation will have to send their executives to the BC with hat in hand and kissing rings to be afforded any consideration. The BC is so out of touch. · 434 days ago
  • Northport · i think it would be cool if there was a rotation kind of set up. Every four years it is held once at Churchill, once at Belmont, once at Santa Anita, and once at any other track · 434 days ago
Arts and Letters improved dramatically during the second half of his three year old season, winning Belmont and taking down 3 year old honors
