Sorry, but if you say Groundhog Day to me, I think of the 1993 Harold Ramis film titled the same, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, way before I think of the chubby rodent from somewhere in Pennsylvania. I like movies, what can I say. If you’ve never seen it, by all means rent it and hunker ...Read More

Artax is one of my all time favorites. I will never forget that Breeders' Cup Day in 1999. I was standing on a garbage can when he looked me straight in the eye as if to say, "what are you doing up here on my level?"..and in that moment our hearts connected as if there were no crowd around us at all. I will see you in the big sky my beautiful friend. Fly free.
R.I.P. Artax...
Just heard from Steve Byk, Artax has passed away from complications of colic in Brazil. Rest in peace.
  • Mike in SB · Artax was one of my favorite horses, wasn't he the horse that almost ran down the drunk that got out on the track at Pimlico on the Preakness undercard one year? · 527 days ago ·

Where have those 120 Beyer horses gone? I miss them. You should, too. When I broached the subject of this column to Andrew Beyer, he said it was going to be depressing reading. True enough, but also, hopefully, educational. I have questions. Perhaps, somebody has answers. Read More

He's way too high on this list, but he was a good horse.
Artax is the fastest horse in the world. 120 flat. Carter Hdcp since 1895. Enough said. This track record may never be broken. Furthermore, was accomplished after a tendon tear that would have retired most horses.

The Never Ending Story was a 1984 film based on a fantasy novel by Michael Ende. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it is a good film, and holds up better than other similarly-themed movies of its era (Dark Crystal, Time Bandits, Dune). The story of the movie centers around Bastian Bux, a bele...Read More
From 1992-1999 Artax had the best beyer figures for sprinter's. Beating Kona Gold in the B.C. Sprint at gulfstream in 107.89 and a 123 beyer. His 124 beyer in his previous race the Forest Hills H-G2 at Belmont in fractions of 22.1 44.3 (11.1 sec. 1/8!!) 55.4 107.3. That's the fastest fraction for that portion of the race i've ever seen and i have the book Champions (past performances of all the Champions of the last century). His soundness problems make you wonder what he could have accomplished if sound.
