Q of the D : aside from John Henry & Spectacular Bid, who was the best horse from the 1980s?

  • kaitlinefree1 · agree completely. Ferdinand was pretty close to Alysheba & Sunday Silence. Lady's Secret & Risen Star were also amazing. · 239 days ago
  • Exterminator · Alysheba. I loved that horse from the moment he stumbled yet went on to win the Derby. · 239 days ago
1987 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. The only chance I got to see America's Horse. At 0:29 his parade pony gets spooked and almost jumps into Alysheba. Race starts at 1:51. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPzSmAzJ3U8

  • jay s. · That's right. No wonder I forgot. Funny, watching the race a minute ago I was like, "I don't remember him being gray, or racing at that age." Temperence Sill. Yep, I remember now. What a spode I am. Thanks Brian for the correction. · 674 days ago
Wish he'd had a son that had carried on his legacy!
Alysheba ... rated 288 ? wow, obviously this webpage leaves doubts of credibility. Joke.
It is very difficult for me to compare horses that ran pre-Seabiscuit. From then until Secretaiat ran his Belmont stunner the benchmark was placed. So since my fan attendance began in the late 1970's I can invoke an opinion over the last 35 years that is not color coated or varnished by bias. With that being said there is a case for several horses as a 3 year old. Alysheba had a very good 2 and 3 year old campaign ending in arguebly

@airdale2008 ... and all others. It is laughable when you look at Alysheba's career, the very difficult field of horses he ran against in several different states from east to west, not to mention he had a bleeding issue and had to find away to run without lasix. Today Alysheba is still the only horse ever to win America's 3 biggest and most important races. The Kentucky Derby, the Santa Anita Handicap and the Breeders Cup Classic. The Bid' had far inferior competition. Personally it is the fact that Alysheba had that "human"aspect that he'd have a bad day now and then, but then bounce back and win over and over again across the USA racing in the toughest Grade 1 events. Alysheba was and always will be America's horse. Top 10 of all time.
  • airedale2008 · captainticket: You have strong passion for Alysheba. That’s good. Every race fan should have a favorite. I too have a favorite that is not in the top 10 and should be. Alysheba’s great grand sire Native Dancer raced 22 times and lost once, by a head in the Derby. That’s it. The greatest winning percentage of any American colt since Colin, 104 years ago. The Gray Ghost was the most popular horse of his time, being easily picked out on black and white tv’s coming down the stretch. As you say, Horse of the Year Alysheba had big wins in the Derby, the Big ‘Cap and BCC. He scored two of the classic wins denied by his sire. I’ll keep promoting Native Dancer. I’m sure you will do the same for Alysheba. Cheers. · 989 days ago
Name the Bid's accomplishments as a 4 year old. There is a saying in sports and athletes. Champions can get beat, but they don't stay beat. Saw the Bid and he was no Alysheba. That comparison is laughable. as far as Dr. Fager, show me how his 4 year old campaign was better. The facts. Alysheba's 1988 was Horse Racing best ever non 2 or 3 year old campaign. Would be glad to debate the facts ... not opinion.

  • larooski · Hell yeah Alysheba is better than Dr.Fager! · 996 days ago
  • airedale2008 · I wish I had seen The Good Doctor race in person. It will be an extremely multi-talented colt who takes champion sprint, champion male turf, champion older male and horse of the year again. Sorry, captainticket, but Dr. Fager’s and Spectacular Bid’s performance at four smoke Alysheba. That’s coming from someone who is not a big fan of the Bid. Surely you are not forgetting Dr. Fager’s still standing one mile record of 1:32 1/5 from 1968 carrying 134? How about the still standing 1:57 4/5 mile and a quarter the Bid set at the Strub Stakes in 1980? Alysheba was a good horse, but was not in the top three at Pimlico at four and will likely never have a top 10 ranking that the other two enjoy. · 995 days ago
6, count them 6, Grade 1 victories in 1988. 4 times ran sub 2:00 mile and a quarter race on 4 different tracks. The Best 4 year old colt in racing history. Top 10 Horse of all time. I dare anyone to compare his 1988 season to any horse that ever lived.

  • shadowno · Footlick you are absolutely right. Before my time but 1953 season good as it gets. I usually associate him with Buckpasser and forget what a top shelf horse he was in his own right. Thanks. · 997 days ago
I wish someone could answer two questions I have concerning Alysheba. 1. How come he isn't more respected, especially after his impressive 4th year, when he broke so many track records. 2. How can they know if he was going to be a good sire, almost all his sons were gilded; especially seeing that now he has some respect as a broodmare sire?

  • travel_vic · McCarron was a good fit to Alysheba. In his Breeder;s Cup win, Chris read the biased Churchill strip and took the animal in the three path, where is was much faster....All of the winnig rides that day came from out there and not on the rail · 1061 days ago
I was looking at Alysheba and noticed after the preakness He went on a 3 race losing skid. Imagine if the handlers would have retired this horse . If this were today Alysheba would heve been retired and thought to be wore out from the grueling triple crown. I think modern day trainers should realize a couple of losses doesnt mean that horse is done or burned out . Just a thought.
Alysheba is one of the few horses I remember that pranced like Zenyatta has more recently..They both did it because they were greatness and they knew it!!

  • Thoroughbred44 · Yes JamminPark, horses love attention! Especially thoroughbreds, the pawing was a way for Z to get rid of stress and she did it her own way to show off, it's like Secretariat's posing. Horses know what they're doing (most the time) after Secretariat lost a race he would go to the back of his stall and just "think" about it, and like JamminPark said, he'd go back and break a track record. Z was showing off (her own take on it) and she was calming herself. · 1321 days ago
  • JamminPark · Well said Thoroughbred44, well said, showing off actually relieves stress, even with people, and I love when horses show off for everyone, hehe my horses always show off hehe :3 · 1321 days ago
