What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Alydar...

If you had to name some of the top sires (in the past century as it is hard to judge those we have little information on), who would you rank near the top? I may be biased, but Alydar is up there for me

This horse should be WAY higher on the list! He would have probably won the Triple Crown if he hadn't been born the same year as Affirmed! I think he maybe could have beaten Seattle Slew maybe.
Very hard to separate Alydar so far from Affirmed

Was 2012 a year of disappointment? Was it a year where the depth of divisions was so lacking that a Turf Miler would be named Horse of the Year, Turf Champion, and Champion Older Male? Or was 2012 a year with such an outstanding group of horses, that it took one so brilliant, so versatile, and so ta...Read More

  • dani.pugh · Just because a turf miler is named HOTY doesn't mean a weak older male division. If the times of the races were sub par and the numbers were way down, I could see it but that was far from the case. The numbers that the older males threw were higher than numbers we have seen in recent years. Times were just as good if not better for that group. Just because one did not establish themselves doesn't mean it was a bad bunch. That could just as well me the group all around was talent and full of depth. It wasn't like a longshot beat the favorite. The horses that won were already well respected. RTG had a very consistent year, as did Fort Larned, MMM, and Flat Out. The Whitney, FO, FL, and RTG went 123. Look at their records, you see they run consistently fast. They were evenly matched, but also one of the best groups of older males we have seen in a long time. Times and numbers say that. · 124 days ago ·

Top 10 horse all time, no doubt. He only loss to Affirmed. He won the Travers, Blue Grass, Florida Derby, and Champagne. He placed in all three TC races to Affirmed, and Overall margin in TC was two lengths. He beat him three times, I believe. He sired Alysheba, Althea, and more. Four time G1 winner. If not being with Affirmed, he would have easily won the TC. His one and only flaw, he was born in the same year as Affirmed.

  • airedale2008 · Yesterday I had my inaugural visit to Saratoga Springs to experience racing at its best. The NYRA does a great job with a free walking tour of the stable area to show fans how horses live off the track and a demonstration of a starting gate. Where else in America can you see stables with slate roofs? The National Museum of Racing is superb, with so much to see that a second visit is required on Woodward and Forego Stakes day. It was a pleasure to film the Alabama, from horses walking up the track to the finish, and seeing my pick Questing win in a front running romp by 9 in the fastest time since 1980.
