  • travel_vic · easy Affirmed. OUTSIDE of their rivalry he was a real champion. I aksed Barrera to sign a shot of his JCGC victoru. "WOuld you sign thtis photo of one of your better ones?" He said "Better? Give me a barn of them!" · 892 days ago
I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but in all three Triple Crown races in 1978, Alydar was on the wrong lead in the stretch! Was that a "thing" with him? Had he chainged leads he coulda/woulda/shoulda won the Preakness and Belmont at least such was the narrow margin of victory.

If you had to name some of the top sires (in the past century as it is hard to judge those we have little information on), who would you rank near the top? I may be biased, but Alydar is up there for me

This horse should be WAY higher on the list! He would have probably won the Triple Crown if he hadn't been born the same year as Affirmed! I think he maybe could have beaten Seattle Slew maybe.
Very hard to separate Alydar so far from Affirmed

  • travel_vic · Horse got hurt running, the rider did not do anything about that or he would have cooled his heels for 30 days plus.....Things happen it is just the biased mind that ascribes, RETROSPECTIVELY, cause and effect to those RANDOM events · 1331 days ago
  • Dressage3295 · From what I remember, the jockey tried to cut off Alydar but Affirmed ended up clipping him. Got 2nd while injured. Never came back after that. · 1331 days ago
May have not been the better race horse compared to Affirmed, but was definitely the better sire.

  • ruffian75 · I don't think that this rivalry surpasses Alydar-Affirmed, but Paradise Creek and Lure matched up on near-equal terms when they hooked up. · 1361 days ago
  • cocoa2 · Domino and Henry of Navarre, sorry. Easy Goer and Sunday Silence meant more to me. · 1361 days ago
Top 10 horse all time, no doubt. He only loss to Affirmed. He won the Travers, Blue Grass, Florida Derby, and Champagne. He placed in all three TC races to Affirmed, and Overall margin in TC was two lengths. He beat him three times, I believe. He sired Alysheba, Althea, and more. Four time G1 winner. If not being with Affirmed, he would have easily won the TC. His one and only flaw, he was born in the same year as Affirmed.

  • Cocoa2 · Our horses ate just as good, but they show their stuff in training and warm ups instead of races. · 1483 days ago
Alydar definitely ranks close to Affirmed as he was the horse that challenged him all the way

  • hshfarms · The guidelines are clearly stated when you click "rate this horse." Record, graded stakes wins, and achievements are how horses are to ranked. · 1656 days ago
Everyone's opinion counts on a fan based website but Alyder rated in the 100s?
This horse reminds me a LOT of Sham. He was a great and wonderful horse full of talent. But just caught at the wrong time, behind another great one(Affirmed) Like Sham and Secretariat...

  • zxswordxz · I'm not trying to discredit Prove Out but I'm almost certain if Red was 100%, it would have been a different race but we'll never know. He was the ultimate horse! Just wish we can see another one like him but today breeding is so different, we get a lot of weak horse, so many horse have injury compare to those days it is unbeliverable that they don't change breeding style. · 1962 days ago
  • icyhotboo · There are days when horses run that they are virtually unbeatable. This was one of those days · 1961 days ago
Like Alydar really belongs at #159! He is a top 50 horse!
If alydar had run just a second sooner in his rush.. prolyl woulda beat affirmed a few more times :)
  • Thead'or · Fact: Alydar never switched leads in the stretch. I guess Affirmed was lucky after all... · 1999 days ago
Rated way too low compared with Affirmed.
