Same connections as Zagora. I immagine she'll be another french tease mare, she come over here start doing really well - and then be retired and bred back in Europe. Kinda hard to get excited about.

  • travel_vic · Grand Slam: wasn't he that sprinter that old D. Wayne could never get to win much at three? · 1016 days ago
  • goblin · Grand Slam was a nice colt that progressed steadily to win at distances from 5 1/2 f. to 1 1/16 mi. as he approached the BCJ in 1997. Shortly after the break in the BCJ another colt (I'm doing this from memory; I think it was Baffert's Souvenir Copy) came right up behind him and "climbed" into his rear legs. He didn't go down and Gary continued to ride, but he began to falter, and I believe was pulled up. The chart says DNF. When he stopped he apparently had a wedge of tissue, including muscle, literally fileted off his left hind leg. It was treated for months; I think had grafting done; developed an infection, etc., etc. Whether he should have tried to come back, I don't know, but he was never the same. I always thought that with the loss of muscle tissue and probably some stricture formation, he did well to run at all. At this time I can't find my print BloodHorse from that BC week in '97. Here is a short description written at the time of the '98 Belmont. http://www.nytimes.com/1998/05/25/sports/horse-racing-grand-slam-wins-and-could-be-a-belmont-threat.html · 1016 days ago
