Brethren with Ramon Domingquez wins The Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldmar Fl 2.12.2011
Zipse’s Kentucky Derby Daily - Day 84

Last year the A.P. Indy mare Supercharger claimed her fame as the dam of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. This year the full sister to three graded stakes winners, might be on the verge of joining the rarified air of the best broodmares in recent history. Four years ago the broodmare Better than Honour completed an amazing double by producing consecutive Belmont winners in Jazil and Rags to Riches. An amazing feat, but it would not be nearly as big as producing two straight victors of the Kentucky Derby. Today, Supercharger’s son Brethren made the seemingly unthinkable, suddenly possible.

Tampa Bay Downs’ Sam F. Davis Stakes proved easy as could be for Brethren.  After bobbling outward at the break from his outside post position, he quickly moved up to sit just off the early pace. From there it was just a matter of when rider Ramon Dominguez would choose to pull the trigger. Brethren assumed command quickly on the turn and drew away under only modest urging to register a four length victory over longshot Too Experience. The win kept the good looking son of Distorted Humor perfect in three calls to the post, following a fast maiden win at Belmont, and a convincing allowance win at Churchill Downs.

Brethren is trained by Todd Pletcher, also the conditioner of the current Derby favorite Uncle Mo, and owned by WinStar Farm. That is the same trainer-owner team that campaigned Super Saver. Elliott Walden of WinStar Farm said of Brethren’s race, “I was very pleased. The thing I was most pleased about was that he didn’t break well. He broke out, which typically happens on the outside post with a very young horse; and yet, he gathered himself and got into the race very quickly and settled down and got into a really nice rhythm. I’m hopeful (that he’ll have no trouble going further.) I mean, he’s got the pedigree for it. Super Saver did it, and we hope he does, too.”

The next logical step for the undefeated Brethren normally would be the Tampa Bay Derby, but with Uncle Mo already penciled in for that race, it is likely that Pletcher will send Super Saver’s little brother elsewhere. Wherever they decide to go today’s impressive win takes a little pressure off, as it raises his Graded Stakes earnings into the Top 10 of current candidates.

In other Derby doings, Boys at Tosconova, arguably the second best juvenile in the nation last year, has been taken out of training and is off the Derby trail. Trainer Rick Dutrow said that the colt is just not right, and is hoping a rest will do him well for later in the season.

Notable works today from Horse Racing Nation’s list of 2011 Kentucky Derby Contenders include three colts pointing for next week’s Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds:

#5 Santiva – Bullet 5f in 1:00.40 (1/35) at Palm Meadows Training Center.
#9 Rogue Romance – Breezed 5f in 1:02.05 (14/39) at Gulfstream Park.
#13 Mucho Macho Man – Breezed 5f in 1:04.35 (34/39) at Gulfstream Park.

What the Nation is saying about Brethren Better than Big Brother?...

Keep in mind there is a dark sheep in the family. Who remembers the NY claimer Hedge Fund that used place over the inner track but rarely if ever win?
Great broodmare, no doubt, but beyond amazing FAMILY.... Everyone of course realizes that Supercharger and She's a Winner (the dam of Bluegrass Cat!, etc) are FULL SISTERS.... which makes CAL NATION (By Distorted Humor) a FULL BROTHER in blood to BRETHERN!!!! They say that Cal Nation isn't going on the Derby Trail since he just broke his maiden at Gulfstream (IMPRESSIVELY) and would be playing too much "catch up football", but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in either the Preakness or Belmont....SUPER family!
yes shoot for six next time so he can clunk and people will believe.
Super Saver Lost his one time at Tampa so what does that say about Brethen! I think Its safe to say "MONSTER"
"he only won by four" they should run him into the ground to show he can do better. all good jocks save as much of their horse as possible!
I'd say a resounding "yes" I think he is better than Super Saver, that was a wonderful performance he gave!
The obvious challenge with the Beyer is it was the only dirt route on the card. That said, he stalked/tracked a slow pace on a surface favoring front end running types. He wins by four, but the horse who was second would be that many plus about 20 more behind the tops in the division. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong... I don't see it, unless he starts to improve rapidly.
The logical conclusion to draw from the Sam Davis is that Brethren looked good beating nothing and did not run very fast. We shall see.
it is to early to tell, didn't super saver get hurt after the derby?i thought that was another reason he was going down hill.
I agree zatt
Beyer's are so subjective ... All you have to do is look at that race to know it was a good performance, especially by a colt making only his 3rd lifetime start.
How so?
The Beyer of 83 is embarrassing ... to the Beyer group.
Who knows, who cares. It's not as if Super Saver went on to do anything good after his Derby win as well as the place horse Ice Box. Makes you wonder if the Derby was just a slop-fest that favored the top two finishers, considering they were 2nd and 3rd choice repectively. As for Bretheren he looked good winning the Sam F Davis yesterday. His facial expression as he's running is very defined and you can tell he has a ton of heart. But at the end of the day he'll have to run faster times against stiffer competition for me to take him seriously just yet.
His Beyer was in the low 80's. He's not even as good as Rule was at this time last year. Sure, he could develop and get better... but he is sure to be overbet (which to me means overrated as well) in the Future pool.
I think he'll be way better than SS. The key thing for him is that he has early tactical speed which will be imporant in the Derby. He bobbled in his first start and got position, and he broke slow yday but showed that speed again to get position then settle. I've got him 3rd on my Derby list. I just think he will be way more talented than SS.
Overrated would mean you know how good this one is ... seems like there is no telling how good he is to this point. Maybe he will turn out to be nothing special in the long run, but he's barely been tested by his competition so far.
No way... I thought he beat a sorry group and is already overrated. Beyer came back low too.
