The Kiddie List - August 12, 2014

The Kiddie List will spotlight the top workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther, plus some entries and results.  I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth.    If a particularly well bred baby shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice.  You can find more of this season’s two year olds on the 2015 Kentucky Derby Contenders and 2015 Kentucky Oaks Contenders  lists.

RECENT STAKES WINNERS RECAP

Adirondack Stakes (G-2)
Cavorting AdirondackCavorting (Bernardini - Promenade Girl, by Carson City) (F) $360K KEENOV13; Spotted on the Kiddie List before her first start,  Cavorting is now a perfect two for two and a graded stakes winner after her easy 1 ½ length victory in the Adirondack.  Cavorting is a daughter of the 2006 Maryland Champion Older Mare. This is the distaff family of the multiple graded stakes winners ANOTHER REVIEW (Californian S., etc.), DANCE COLONY (Adirondack S. 2nd in Gazelle), Swaps hero BLUESKIESNRAINBOWS, and Santa Barbara Handicap heroine NO REVIEW.  The fourth dam Dumfries is a blue hen. Cavorting should stretch out to 1 1/6 miles without a problem.

Saratoga Special (G-2)
I Spent It Saratoga SpecialI Spent It (Super Saver - Rateeba, by Sky Mesa) (C) $600K FTFMAR14; is another Kiddie List graduate.  He continues to live up to his hefty price tag and like Cavorting, I Spent It is undefeated in his first two starts after a 2 ¾ length win in the Saratoga Special.  I Spent It’s dam is a half to multiple juvenile stakes winner and sire ZAVTA and San Rafael Stakes (G-3) placed Cocky.  This is the distaff line of sire DIXIE UNION.  I Spent It should handle 1 1/16 miles.

Prairie Meadows Juvenile
PRIVATE PROSPECT (Discreet Cat - Private Deputy, by Private Terms) (C) $28K KEESEP12;  is undefeated in three starts, after holding off Lucky Player by a neck in the Prairie Meadows Juvenile Mile on August 9.  Trained by Michael Campbell, the son of Discreet Cat previously captured the Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes.  Private Prospect is a half to the stakes placed turf sprinter Privately Approved (With Approval).  Their dam is also stakes placed. Private Prospect is inbred to the stallion Private Account 3x3, as that stallion is the damsire of Discreet Cat and he is also the sire of Private Terms.  Private Prospect has the pedigree to handle 1 1/8 miles.

Sorrento Stakes (G-2)
Sunset Glow Sorrento StakesSUNSET GLOW (Exchange Rate - Perfectforthepart, by Dynaformer) (F) $140K KEESEP13; has a 4-2-2-0 race record.  The well-traveled filly was second in her debut at Presque Isle Downs before winning at Belmont.  Trainer Wesley Ward took her to England where Sunset Glow placed second in the Albany Stakes (Group 3) at Ascot.  Three months later, she jetted to a 3 ¼ length win in the Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar.  The pretty gray filly is the first foal born of her stakes placed dam.  There’s little blacktype in this distaff family, although the third dam ANDESTINE is a Grade 1 winner.

Florida Sire Desert Vixen Stakes
Leap Year LuckLEAP YEAR LUCK (Hear No Evil - Lucky of Course, by Awesome of Course) (F) won her maiden in the Desert Vixen Stakes on August 9, leaping to a 4 ¾ length victory after previously missing by a neck in a maiden race. The Jacks or Better Farm homebred owns the only blacktype in three generations of her female family.

Florida Sire Dr. Fager Stakes
Sing PraisesSING PRAISES (Hear No Evil - Sacred Psalm, by Awesome of Course) (C) has won two of three starts, including the Birdonthewire Stakes and a front-running 1 ¾ score in the Dr. Fager Stakes on August 9 for the same connections as Leap Year Luck.  Sing Praises is the first foal born of his stakes placed dam. The colt should stretch out to 1 1/6 miles without a problem.

Ontario Debutante Stakes
Dixie TwistDIXIE TWIST (Indian Charlie - Dixie Talking, by Dixieland Band) (F) $180K KEESEP13; fought hard throughout the race and prevailed by a short head over Roaming in the Ontario Debutante on August 9.  Trainer Mark Casse unveiled the filly in the Shady Well Stakes where she finished second after a troubled trip.  Dixie Twist is a half sister to Illinois Derby (G-3) hero DONE TALKING (Broken Vow) and to restricted juvenile stakes winner TABLE TALKING (Orientate). Their dam is a dual stakes winner, including the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship. The second dam, GIN TALKING is a Grade 3 stakes winner.  Dixie Twist has the pedigree to handle two turns.

Del Mar
Race 5 | MSW 1 Mile | 2YO Fillies
Miss Mandate (Pioneerof the Nile - Baba's Mandate, by Full Mandate) (F) $145K (RNA) FTKOCT13; hasn’t shown much in either start. Pioneerof The Nile’s babies are 0-8 over the Del Mar polytrack.  Miss Mandate’s dam is a full sister to the top handicap horse RON THE GREEK and the second dam Flambeau is a full sister to the dam of multiple Grade 1 placed MUSKET MAN.  Miss Mandate may be slow to mature and the distance should help.  Watch for her when she switches back to dirt.

Redshirt (Distorted Humor - Perceive, by A.P. Indy) (F) This Darley homebred was a good third in her debut at Del Mar.   Her unraced dam is a half to Nashua winner ETCHED and Sham winner OUT OF BOUNDS. The Second dam is BC Distaff winner UNBRIDLED ELAINE. Distorted Humor is a superior Polysire.

Hone In (Smart Strike - Direct Line, by Tiznow) (F) didn’t show much sprinting in her debut at Woodbine.  She has a slow-maturing, two turn pedigree. Her dam is a stakes winning miler and a half sister to ADIEU, winner of the Frizzette at two and Delaware Oaks at three. She’s also a half to stakes winners RAPPORT and SPEAK WISELY, plus the dam of multiple stakes winning sprinter LAURIE’S ROCKET.

Awesome Diamond (Galileo (IRE) - Adoration, by Honor Grades)(F) $625KBESMAR14; The   daughter of BC Distaff winner ADORATION was third in her debut over the Del Mar lawn.  None of her siblings own blacktype and her two full siblings to race have never won.  Neither have her half siblings, who raced over turf and synthetic.

Gulfstream Park
Race 3 | ALW 6 ½ F | 2YO Fillies
Naval Command fillyNaval Command (Midshipman - Lucky Flyer, by Fusaichi Pegasus) (F) $60K OBSAPR14; After winning her debut, she was second in the 5 ½ furlong Cassidy Stakes. She’s a half sister to English stakes winner YEAGER (Medaglia d'Oro).  Their second dam BEAUTIFUL CRAZY won the Hawthorne Oaks and fourth dam is Kentucky Oaks heroine LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY.

Tierra Dorada (Colonel John - K. O. Kitty, by Tale of the Cat) (F) $20K KEESEP13 ;  needed three races to win her maiden, which she did in her last start, by a neck over eventual Desert Vixen heroine LEAP YEAR LUCK.  Tierra Dorada is a half to multiple stakes placed Syriana's Song (Indian Charlie), otherwise, there is no blacktype in the first few generations of her female family.  Tierra Dorada has a slower developing pedigree and should relish two turns.

Artistic Touch (Artie Schiller - Bag of Stars, by Devil's Bag) (F) $60K OBSMAR14; After two finishes off of the board, she outclassed maidens by a neck in a dirt sprint.  Gennadi Dorochenko wheeled her back a few weeks later in the Cassidy Stakes where the daughter of Breeders’ Cup Mile Champ Artie Schiller finished fourth. This filly has the pedigree to excel over the turf. Her damsire sire is a Champion full brother to Champion Glorious Song and top sire Saint Ballado.  Artistic Touch’s second damsire Nijinsky won the English Triple Crown. Artistic Touch has similar breeding to the stakes placed Actionontwo, as both are by Artie Schiller out of mares by Devil’s Bag. That one is a winner over turf and stakes placed over Polytrack.  Keep an eye on Artistic Touch is she makes a start over the lawn.

Saratoga
Race 6 | MSW 6F | 2YO
El Kabeir coltEl Kabeir (Scat Daddy - Great Venue, by Unbridled's Song) (C) $250k OBSAUG13; Mentioned on the June 29 Kiddie List.  His unraced dam is a half to multiple graded stakes winning sprinter TOO MUCH BLING, plus listed/restricted stakes winners READY FOR ROSES, BARNSY, LITTLEBITABLING and stakes placed Got Bling.  The second dam ROSE COLORED LADY is a stakes winner and a full sister to a restricted multiple stakes winner. Scat Daddy’s babies are best over turf/Poly. The pretty gray El Kabeir has some turf attributes through Nijinsky, Lyphard, Green Desert and Cairo.  His female family is filled with dirt sprinters, so this is a likely place to start.

Malibu Warrior (Malibu Moon - Alpha Kitten, by Tale of the Cat) (C) $500K KEESEP13; He’s the first foal out of a Grade 2 stakes winner.  His second dam is a half sister to Matron Stakes (G-1) winner MARLYBONE. That one bore two stakes winners. The Pletcher trainee could win at sprint distances, but should be more comfortable at a mile and longer.

Bingley (Medaglia d'Oro - Funny Feeling, by Distorted Humor) (C) $400K FTSAUG13; He’s the first foal out of a stakes winning sprinter.  His dam is a full sister to Malibu Stakes (G-1) hero JIMMY CREED, and a half to multiple Grade 1 winner PUSSYCAT DOLL. Bingley’s second dam is Grade 1 winner HOOKEDONTHEFEELIN. Multiple Grade 1 winner MIDNIGHT LUCKY is also part of this female family.  Bingly might handle sprints, but like many in here, he’ll appreciate going longer.

I've been around horses for most of my life, working in racing stables as a hot walker and exercise rider in my teenage years, and later as a volunteer with rescued and retired racehorses. I became interested in pedigree when the sons and daughters of my favorite horses started their racing careers.

For more than a decade, I've passionately studied pedigree, how it applies to handicapping and breeding theories. In 2010, I joined Horse Racing Nation as their Pedigree Analyst, focusing on juvenile stakes winners, Triple Crown contenders and first crop sires from a handicapping perspective.

In 2011, I accepted the role of South Florida Coordinator and Advisory Board Member for the national non-profit Thoroughbred Racing Fan Association (ThoroFan). Working closely with Gulfstream Park management and other race fans, we created a ThoroFan Chapter at Gulfstream Race Track. Our main project is assisting Thoroughbred rescue and re-training groups.

I continue to maintain my website Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds and blog of the same name. As a pedigree consultant, I specialize in assisting small to mid-size breeding/training operations with broodmare breeding reports, sales catalog analysis and recommendations on claims and private sales. 10 - 20% of all proceeds are donated to Thoroughbred rescue and retraining groups.

I welcome your questions regarding pedigree, handicapping and breeding. If you would like me to cover a specific topic please contact me at lross@horseracingnation.com.
