What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

An exuberant individual whom carried the weight of British racing on his shoulders, Frankie Dettori is now building up to his big return to riding after a six month international ban.Read More

  • ILuvTurfRacing · As of yesterday Dettori's legal representive was still trying to get the British Racing Authority to reconvine in an attempt to hasten Dettori's license renewal so he can get back to racing, but the BHA is saying they're still waiting on the results of 3 additional drug screens taken by France Galop, the French Racing Authority, before Dettori can even be considered for having his license renewed. I know this much, Dettori screwed up, he admitted it, he took his punishment without any b-tching, belly aching, or appeals, he did his 6 month suspension and now it seems like BHA & France Galop are purposely delaying his return. If we're gonna start slamming Dettori for testing positive for drugs lest we forget, Patrick Valezuala got suspended for failing a drug test which cost him the mount on Sunday Silence in the 1989 Belmont Stakes. Kent Desormeux's had a much publized racing career battling drug & alchol abuse. Plenty of jockey's in the sport are guilty are this, not just Dettori. · 13 seconds ago ·

Fitting that Hooh Why's next probably start is the Matron on Saturday. She is in foal to Leroidesanimaux and is due January 15th. Her trainer says she is a once in a life time horse and has a few more "bullets left in her to fire". Evidently, pregnancy is agreeing with Hooh Why! I rode through my 7th month, but I am sure it is not the same thing ;)

watching the first turf mile initiated a querie. For a very long time every data provider (Trackmaster, HDW, Equibase etc.) were known to not have turf speed ratings on par with the reliability of the main track. The major reason is related to the standard practice of protecting various lanes of the turf surface from overuse by limiting the run to a variety of lanes away from the inner rail, and then not compensating for the increased circumference the horses traversed. The way some tracks compensate for this variance has been the subject of my contacting a representative of Teletimer Company. (The organization responsible for the timing of races at most top tracks). They have calculated the amount of added ground that these lane variances create and do two things to equalize the distances: 1) moving the gate and 2) moving both the infield 16th pole and starter electronic timer sensors. Their rep handed me a pair of binoculars to observe what appeared to be four green “stumps” along the inner rail of the turf backstretch near the start of the mile..”The crew alters the 8th pole and starting gate position to match one of four positions that align to lanes 0 – no change, 1 , 2, 3 and 4 and then 5. These have been carefully calibrated to account for the added distance travelled by the field when the lanes are set up around the turf course. The effect of the extra distance traversed is multiplied by how far from the finish line the start is, so each segment has to have differing compensations. That accounts for having 88 functional time sensors just on the turf course to cover all the combinations that each wider lane creates. He told me that Trackus “really messed up on the turf timer for they made no serious alterations in relation to the position of the start, but used some, what he called, an oddball mathematical formula, that just did not work.” “Most tracks don’t do this as the electronics, especially the switchover timers race to race, cost lots to install. When you see various turf distances as most tracks, the gate and timer alterations have not been made so the data has built in error.” FINALLY I discovered the exact mechanism.
  • Mary Z. · So, when the chart states that the rail is out however many feet, sometimes the added distance isn't accounted for when the race is timed? · 3 days ago ·

I've been so busy this week, I completely overlook this horse's outstanding performance in the Singapore Airlines International Cup. He blew away the talent packed field by 3 1/2 lengths after being geared down the last 100 meters. Probably the most dominating international G1 turf performance I have seen so far this year.
Off at odds of 15-1, many were speechless when Oxbow won Preakness 138. What a fluke! What a horrible race! Why was it so horrible? Because horseplayers didn’t see it coming due to being blinded by Orb's so-called brilliance. Read More

  • likin sparks · I wish I could put the size of the field debate to rest but there will always be a whatif? The way I see it for the horses that won the TC even in a 19 or 20 horse field I would have little doubt it would make a difference, they were just that damn good and kept proving after the TC was over. Back then the breeding was't so hosed up and the horses were not exposed to all the doping as todays. · 2 days ago ·

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute officially annouced this morning to the UK racing media that Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's top Epsom Derby hopeful, Telescope, has a sore left shin and "will not" be running in the G1 Epsom Derby on June 1st. Telescope missed his intended seasonal debut last week in the G2 Dante Stakes at York due to a graze on his leg that became infected.
If you could go back and meet/see any horse(s) throughout the history of racing, who would they be?

  • LAZMANNICK · I loved Seabiscuit and have watched it several times over the years. After the success of Seabiscuit, like many, I was hotly anticipating the Secretariat movie. I was never so disappointed in my life. Very little actual racing footage and it particularly galled me when we got to see the Preakness (or was it the Belmont) on TV in the background behind the kids throwing popcorn in the air. We got to see more footage of people in the stands than actual horses on the track. My favorite horse movie though wasn’t about race horses. It was War Horse, a very touching movie. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend that you watch it. It won’t disappoint. · 7 hours ago ·

  • rafirox · Basically a competition where you pick four (4) entrants for the big race of the weekend, and put how ever much amount you'd like. They give you money for the pool they came in. For example, I got $813 for Oxbow winning ($32.50 to win) and got $120 or something for Mylute to show ($5.20).. I picked the top four (4) horses, Oxbow, Itsmyluckyday, Mylute, and Orb. I did not know how to adjust the amount wagered, so all had $25 coins on them. It was my first round ever; I came in first out of 5000 or so on my first try, talk about beginner's luck!
