Hope springs eternal this time of year with two-year-olds
hitting racetracks around the country. The debut of one such baby at Hollywood Park on Saturday left the connections
with smiles on their faces and a pep in their step that is sure to last a
while.
Majestic City broke beautifully from the inside post No. 1 with a full field of nine others to his
outside and cruised the four-and-a-half furlongs under David Flores without even
taking a deep breath, stopping the clock just three ticks shy of the track
record in 51.1. The winning margin of a length and a half could have been much
bigger, as the strapping chestnut colt with a monstrous stride ran straight as
an arrow under just mild hand urging.
Flores was so excited in the
winner’s circle after the race that he offered to sleep with the colt in his
stall.
The performance also marked the debut for the red, black and
yellow silks of the newly-formed syndicate Majestic Racing Stables, founded by
Mike Shustek and managed by Jeff Bloom. With the help of bloodstock consultant
Nick Hines, the group has cherry picked the top talent at the best value from
sales around the country.
A son of City Zip, Majestic
City was purchased for $180,000 at the
Ocala March Sale in Florida
and now calls Peter Miller’s barn home. After earning an 86 Beyer speed figure,
the next possible step is the $70,000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes on
June 12.
