Nestled in the northwest suburbs of Chicagoland, Arlington Park is a pleasure to visit rain or shine. The latter came through for the 2017 edition of the Grade 3 Arlington Classic Stakes, a 1-1/16 mile turf route for three-year-olds.

With Shaun Bridgmohan up, Cowboy Culture earned his first graded stakes victory. Trained by Brad Cox, the Quality Road colt has a record of four wins in six starts.

Arlington Park bugler Monica Benson plays the call to the post.

With Jose Lopez up, Malroux runs away with the win in a maiden special weight.

Blackhawk Warrior and Nicolas Meza warm up in the post parade prior to a claiming race.

Laflowmylaxbro and Santo Sanjur warm up in the post parade prior to a claiming race.

Monday Pirate and Jose Valdivia, Jr. are much the best in a claiming race.

The horses go to post for race six.

Shezahotmama and Santo Sanjur are all alone as they reach the wire first in race six.

With Carlos Marquez, Jr. up, Fort Ridge gathers himself to jump shortly after winning an allowance race.

Fort Ridge was rather nonchalant and pleasant as he jumped.

Perhaps he's demonstrating that he can be a steeplechaser or eventer, too!

Fort Ridge and Carlos Marquez, Jr. are led into the winner's circle after winning an allowance race by leaps and bounds.

With Channing Hill up, Fast and Accurate, who set the pace in the Kentucky Derby just weeks prior, does the same in the Arlington Classic Stakes.

On hiatus last year, the 1 1/8 miles Illinois Derby (G3) returned to Hawthorne Race Course for 2017. Once regarded a Kentucky Derby prep, the Illinois Derby has unfortunately been left out of the Derby points system.

The turf and early afternoon slant of the California sun differed from yesterday's Distaff, but the result of the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Gr. I) was a flashback to the narrow margin of victory between supermare Beholder and superfilly Songbird in that race. Queen's Trust (GB) and Frankie Dettori won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf by a nose over Lady Eli, with Avenge third and Seventh Heaven (IRE) fourth. The final time for the 1-¼ miles was 1:57.75. Queen’s Trust, a homebred three-year-old Dansili filly, is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by Cheveley Park Stud.

In the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf,, wondermare Lady Eli doesn’t need to look for her storybook ending to the year; she already wrote it.

With Tepin on the program, who would have guessed that it would be another turf mare who would steal the show.

 Meet Heidi Carpenter

An equestrian since 1986, Heidi has loved horses for as long as she can remember. She fell in love with the sport and history of Thoroughbred racing as a young girl after reading about the great champions of yesteryear, including Man o' War, Lexington, Equipoise, and Citation.

Heidi has a great interest in the stories, connections and images abound in Thoroughbred racing. She also enjoys studying pedigrees and racing history.

Heidi lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her husband (who is also a racing fan) and four cats, and has her beloved horse, Limerick, boarded nearby. Registered as Amanda Bry, Limerick is a 1991-model OTTB mare that Heidi has had since 1996. Heidi also runs Racing Reviewer.
