Full Card Selections for Sunland Park (Sunland Derby Day -- 3/25/12)

Sunland Park Plays of the Day - Sunday, March 25, 2012

(Strength of plays indicated by asterisks... the more asterisks, yeah, you get the hint!)

** Race 1 -- (5) MINISTERS POWER, #2 Franksassessedvalu, #4 Bronze Fox

** Race 2 -- (4) CONSISTENTLYAFLEET, #9 Taste The Roses

* Race 3 -- (8) WANAWIN, #1 San Juan Cigar, #9 Coff It Up, #6 Speedy Caracal

**** Race 4 -- (6) WHOS LAZY lost all chance last time out when trying to chase a slow pace from an outside post against a little bit better company. Drawn better today for trainer Thomas Gonzalez, there’s clearly some more speed signed on here today and he should be in the thick of things turning for home. #11 HIGH RIDGE RUNNER will need to do his best running from a pesky outside draw, but he’s been tackling some tough customers of late. I like the fast drill since the last race and he could be tough to run down if he doesn’t work himself too hard getting over from that post. #8 BOOGER BOO adores this course, having hit the board in 11 of 20 starts here. He figures to get a fine trip chasing a moderate pace and should offer good value. #4 AMOROSO dueled through fast fractions and drew off late to beat sprinters at this claiming level last out. He’s not nearly as good at this distance and may be best used underneath.

*** Race 5 -- (10) FREEZE EM ECHO gets a little benefit in post positions today and finds a field where her speed may be enough to run off and hide here. The Jose Ramos trainee was drawn outside KISS ME SLEW when that one finished ahead of the top pick last time out. Today, a switch in the posts and a little more class than the ML favorite makes ’Echo the preferred play. #12 KISS ME SLEW is still looking for her second career win. She broke her maiden in her first career start last December, so she keeps trying and keeps coming up short. Why should today be any different?

* Race 6 -- (4) TWELVE TWENTY TWO, #1 Remit

**** Race 7 -- (2) ROSE’S DESERT is back sprinting, which is precisely what she wants to do. The Todd Fincher trainee has more than one edge tactically in this spot, she likes the course, she’s a better sprinter than the ML favorite, and she has worked extremely well since her last race.
We’ll single ROSE’S DESERT in all the multi-race wagers and play her on top in exotics over #6 Shemoves, #7 Cali Baby, #8 I Am Lesters Gal, #10 Dream Kin.

* Race 8 -- (9) DAWN IS AFFIRMED, #10 Dashkova, #11 Silk Strawberry

** Race 9 -- (2) QUIET AGAIN, #4 Imco Spirit

** Race 10 -- (7) THAT’S WHO, #8 Rio De Dinero

** Race 11 -- (3) PRINCESS ARABELLA, #5 Glinda The Good

** Race 12 -- (1) CASTAWAY, #4 Isn’t He Clever

*** Race 13 -- (11) SOUR GIRL #6 Dirty Shame, #4 WF Diamond Halo

Dumb, dumb, dumb rides on Castaway and Ender Kneivel.... too fast, too reckless, and nothing left by the time they got to the turn!!!!
Daddy Nose Best...evidently dirt not a question any longer!
PRINCESS ARABELLA.... nicely done. Nuff said.
You'll forgive me for the following moment of sadness.... My friend Bert Sugar, one of the greatest sports writers and historians and a man who I've known since I was an infant, passed away this afternoon at 74. He will be missed.
No excuses at all for DAWN IS BREAKING.... she made the lead as she pleased and just had nothing left when confronted by eventual winner DASHKOVA. Seems to be playing better on the outside, but again, not an excuse at all for 1-5 favorite getting beaten in the stretch.
Game score for ROSE'S DESERT in the La Coneja.... Much like earlier when we said Amoroso can't route, morning line favorite Iplaytricks in here can't sprint.
All class.... that was too easy for TWELVE TWENTY TWO! She's now a perfect 7-for-7 at Sunland! Everywhere else??? 1-for-7!
Wide trips hurt favored Kiss Me Slew and Freeze Em Echo. Winner got the right trip early, swung out and had a little left for the final yards. Favorites taking it on the chin here today.
nice winner in BOOGER BOO!! They went faster here internally than they've done all day so far (47 3/5, 112 1/5) track may be speeding up a bit. Amoroso cannot route and shouldnt be routing!!! Dixie Film may be the worst post time favorite Ive ever seen! Hope some of you used the winner and runner-up.
wow.... what a betting race.... a 4-1 favorite at post time!!! I'd take that price, but nothing less on Amoroso!
Had the right idea trying to beat the "forever destined to be a maiden" Speedy Caracal, but the wrong horse on top. Good guys in both Eric Mikkelson and Alfredo Juarez, Jr.
Late scratch in the 3rd race today.... take out #11 HE'S A WHIZ
Big Kiss was much the best
Big race off a long layoff for BIG KISS, who got no action on the board. Had to play him at 4-1 since he hasnt been that big a price in a long time. :48 internal fractipn and inside position was enough to get him home. Nice score.
Bet on Contreras, he was tops at Sunland a couple of years ago, and has all kinds of magic up his sleeves.
The world will soon hear just how good this guy is
L Contreras off to fast start at Sunland. Guides TIE ROD ($11.60) home in 1st. No excuses for Indian Weaver, who failed on slow fractions.
Will it be another big day for Baffert?
Steve has always had a passion for the sport and it shows. Sunland Park will always hold a special place in my heart. We had some good years there as publicity and advertising director. My close friend jockey Wendell Leeling was special along with a host of top horsemen. So enjoy the ride.
like stirred up over isnt he clever also,daddy nose best

MEET STEVE BORTSTEIN

I have had the pleasure of seeing the business of racing from several unique angles.

As a writer, I enjoy the time spent with horsemen, interviewing some of the most amazing people the sport has to offer.

As a radio talk show host, I get to hear the excitement of the jockey moments after winning a big race and the thunderous noise of a live crowd growing louder as the stretch run gets closer to completion.

As a paddock show host, I see the horses, not just as numbers and statistics on a sheet of paper, but as strong, incredible, vulnerable and energetic animals, capable of either being brilliant or chaotic as any animal at any given moment.

I have been covering the sport of horse racing for nearly 20 years, starting as a young, roving reporter in Southern California before moving to New Mexico in 2002.

I have had the extreme pleasure of watching the sport of kings thrive and succeed here in the Land of Enchantment.

In addition to the incredible quarter horse talent on display here on a daily basis, we’re also blessed to be the home state of record-setter Peppers Pride as well as one of the biggest longshot winners in Kentucky Derby history, Mine That Bird.

I’ll be here frequently offering reports and selections on races throughout the state of New Mexico, from Sunland to Zia, from Albuquerque to Ruidoso, and from my hometown track of SunRay Park and Casino, where I work as paddock show host when I am not doing my “other” job as a radio talk show host on FOX SPORTS AM1340.

Please feel free to let me know if you like or dislike what you see here. I firmly believe you learn something new every day in this sport, so if you have something to teach me, feel free to let me know.

I hope you enjoy the work here and throughout the pages of Horse Racing Nation. I’m proud to be a new member of this extraordinary family.
